October 2019 Monthly Newsletter
Happy October, Rainiers!
Greetings Columbia Crest Families,
Colors tell a story! As the leaves turn from green to gold we know school has started and learning is underway. Speaking of gold, we are adding to our GOLD awards. To focus on writing we will have a Golden Pencil Award as teachers look for those outstanding pieces of writing. Bus drivers will also compete for the bus with the best behavior. Remind your child of the importance of being a responsible and safe rider.
It is rather unique for students to experience weekly outdoor garden/nutrition lessons in a garden built by students, parents and community members. We appreciate having the opportunity to provide students with hands-on nutrition lessons that will hopefully lead to making healthy life decisions in adulthood. We thank Mr. Hehemann for being our garden leader and Hands-on-Health teacher for all grade levels.
With Appreciation,
Principal Shew

Counselor's Corner
Happy Fall! I have so enjoyed my time getting to know the amazing families students and families here at Columbia Crest this past month! You might have heard from your student that I am completing "minute meetings" with each student in our school so I can make sure I meet each one of them! I have had a lot of fun learning more about them. This school year we are focusing on a different character trait every month, in September we focused on Self-Control and in October we will be working on Bullying. Each month you will also get a parent connection letter if you choose to continue that work at home, which we hope you do! I am looking to get a few small groups going with students starting in October (topics can include friendship, anger identification and coping skills, worry, self-control or conflict resolution), if you feel your student could benefit from any assistance in those areas, please let me know.
As a reminder I am here at Columbia Crest every other Wednesday as well as every Thursday and Friday. Please give me a call or send me an email if you want to connect with me about your student's needs. Looking forward to another great month!

Character Trait of the Month ~ Bullying Prevention
Bullying is an intentional behavior that hurts, harms, or humiliates a student, either physically or emotionally, and can happen while at school, in the community, or online. Those bullying often have more social or physical “power,” while those targeted have difficulty stopping the behavior. The behavior is typically repeated, though it can be a one-time incident.
