MPS Curriculum Update for September 2022
Every Kids Needs a Champion
Who was your favorite teacher in school? What qualities did that teacher have that made them your favorite?
Through all the curriculum, technology, IEPs, RTI, report cards, parent meetings, team meetings - all that matters is that you can be the best part of the child's day.
Take a few minutes to watch this inspiring Ted Talk about how YOU make a difference! If you've had one of those days, if you need a smile, this video will do it!

Instructional Strategy of the Month: Learning Loops (Communication)
Learning Loops
One-half of the class forms a loop facing out; the other half forms a loop facing in.
Inside-loop students each have a different question card, important word, interesting visual, or question about a text for their partner to answer, describe, or explain.
Inside-loop presents their card, outside-loop partner responds, then inside praises or prompts.
At the teacher’s signal, the outside circle rotates one person to the left.
Repeat steps 3-4 for as many rounds as the teacher determines appropriate.
Inside-loop gives outside-loop their question cards, and the process repeats with the inside-loop rotating this time.
Teacher sees and hears the students’ thinking and clarifies/verifies as appropriate
Upcoming Professional Learning
Math Professional Learning
There are two ways to look at professional learning: just another thing on the calendar or a new way to make teaching easier. I hope you get as excited as I do about learning new techniques, strategies, and collaborating with others in our district.
There have been some changes to the original schedule. Please be sure to check the dates!
The Problem with Word Problems
How do you grow confident and effective problem solvers? The problem with word problems can be conquered by building confidence, flexible thinking, and developing a problem-solving routine. We will be diving into a strategy that promotes a classroom that gets kids thinking and talking about their word problems while building confidence and success!
Sept. 12th 5:00 - 6:00

Instructional Strategies: Engaging Students in Academic Vocabulary and Use of Anchor Charts
Are your students struggling to use academic vocabulary correctly or even at all? Let’s learn some strategies to help students effectively use vocabulary in ALL subject areas.
Tuesday, October 25th 4:30 – 5:30 (ASC)
or
Tuesday, November 1st
4:30 – 5:30 (FVE)
Strategies for Engaging Students in Number Sense Play (Make-and-Take)
Let’s make math FUN. We can learn number sense and math fluency through play. This session does require registration in order to purchase items for this Make-and-Take session. Registration will close on October 14th
PK - 1st: Tuesday, November 8th --- 4:30 - 5:30
2nd - 3rd: Tuesday, November 15th --- 4:30 - 5:30

Fraction Progressions: How to Use What Your Students Already Know to Solve Rich Math Performance Tasks
This edWebinar will explore facilitation of fraction instruction in the classroom using the Five Practices: anticipating, monitoring, selecting, sequencing, and connecting. Along the way, we’ll look at:
- How performance tasks serve as the perfect complement to support the development within the fraction progressions
- Why developing solutions is as important as finding answers
- Specific tools teachers can use to foster conceptual understanding of fractions
September 20th 4:00 - 5:00
Tools and Strategies for Increasing Achievement in English Language and Struggling Learners
In this edWebinar, attendees will be introduced to strategies, tech tools, and resources that offer learners, especially English learners (ELs), optimal opportunities for language development and academic achievement. Participants will also learn how to effectively scaffold instruction for ELs and struggling learners in content-area classes while building on students’ strengths to maximize engagement.
September 28th 4:00 - 5:00
What's New?
Additions to Pacing Guides (K-2)
For the first quarter, I have added suggested manipulatives for particular lessons and have added children's books that will help teach the math concept. I will begin adding books and manipulative suggestions for the 2nd quarter over the next couple of weeks.
Envision and Canvas Integration
Did you know that you can now assigned Envision assignments straight through Canvas? The students never have to leave canvas to complete assignments. You can also have your grades automatically sync to IC if you choose that option.
Here is a quick video to who you how to assign Envision directly in Canvas.
Instructional Strategies from Coordinator Day
At coordinator day, we used three instructional strategies to help students communicate mathematically and justify answers.
Strategies:
Four Corners - Three ways to Play
Which One Doesn't Belong - No "correct" answers. Focus is justification
Would you rather - Focus is on justification
Here is a link to the PPT that we used on coordinator day.
If you would like to discuss how to use these in your classroom, please reach out, and we will find a time that works for you.
All the Data!
Weave Data into Other Topics
Your data standards and objects don't have to be a separate chapter in the book. Tie it with other topics by having a data question of the day, data question of the week, or building your own graph with student responses. You can tie in just about any other math topic and see the application through a data focus.
Batman (2nd - 6th)
Let your kids talk about comics and math at the same time!
Possible topics from this graph:
- Whole number addition and subtraction
- Whole number multiplication
- Fractions of a whole
- Ratios
- Alternate data representations
Popular Fruits (PK - 1)
Let's look at some data talks without numbers!
Possible topics from this graph:
- colors
- size
- comparing sizes
- ordering sizes
Deforestation (3rd - 5th)
Let's look at some ecosystems.
Possible topics from this graph:
- Ordering Numbers to ten thousand's place
- Addition and subtraction up to ten thousand's place
- Multiplication of 4 x1 or 4 x 2
- Rounding
Children's Literature
Non-mathy Children's Books
Some books are very direct in fact they are also teaching math concepts. However, this month we are focusing on children's books that can be TIED to math but aren't necessarily "math" books.
Waiting (PK - 1st)
Written by: Kevin Henkes
Waiting is a big part of childhood—waiting in line, waiting to grow up, waiting for something special to happen—but in this book, a child sets the stage and pulls the strings. Timeless, beautiful, and deeply heartfelt, this picture book about imaginative play, the seasons, friendship, and surprises is a Caldecott Honor and Geisel Honor Book.
Math Concepts:
- Repeating Patterns
- Counting
- Number Sentences
- Number Words
- One More
- One Less
Read Aloud (by the author)
The Three Little Javelinas (1st - 3rd)
Everyone knows the story of the three little pigs, but now you're going to meet the three little javelinas (pronounced ha-ve-LEE-nas)-loveable, wild, southwestern cousins of pigs. Living in homes built out of tumbleweeds and saguaro ribs (from the fallen giant cacti), the first two javelinas are soon running from the hungry coyote, who had hoped to eat them with red chile sauce. And where do they go for shelter? Why, to their wise sister's house, made strong with adobe bricks.
Math Concepts:
- Measuring with nonstandard units
- Measuring with standard units
- Attributes of Geometric Figures
- Geometric Properties
Infinity and Me (4th - 6th)
Written by: Kate Hosford
Uma can't help feeling small when she peers up at the night sky. She begins to wonder about infinity. Is infinity a number that grows forever? Is it an endless racetrack? Could infinity be in an ice cream cone? Uma soon finds that the ways to think about this big idea may just be . . . infinite.
