The Falcon Flyer
Weekly News and Updates - Volume 3 Issue 17 - 1/6/2023
Welcome to 2023!
Happy New Year, Falcons! Welcome to 2023, the year that's meant to be! Hope you and yours enjoyed your spring break preview week (the first week of winter break) and your full week of actual San Diego winter weather (last week). The rain and cold hasn't dampered our spirits as we launch January. Next week we are full speed ahead on multiple fronts.
Our attendance challenge kicks off on Monday with a goal of 95% average daily attendance for each class. At the end of the week, all classes who met the goal will receive a letter spelling out F-A-L-C-O-N-S. Once a class spells out FALCONS, they will be awarded a popcorn party hosted by Principal Friedenberg.
Additionally, Monday, January 9th, is our next VAPA (Visual and Performing Arts) Day! Students in all grade levels will participate in dance, acting, music, and visual arts classes throughout the day. During that time, our teaching staff will gather in professional learning communities focused on reading interventions and project-based learning.
Wednesday, January 11th, is our next School Site Council Meeting. We will be reviewing the results of the parent and staff Budget Priorities Survey. If you haven't had a chance to complete the survey, there's still time! We have extended the window to accept responses until Sunday at 11:59PM. Make your voice heard!
Thursday, January 12th, is our second PTA meeting of the year. See info below π
Lastly, our 3rd-5th grade students will begin their FAST reading assessment. This is an online diagnostic tool that's used to support instruction by tracking students' reading abilities throughout the year. Our goal is for all students to be reading at or above grade level by the end of the year. We can't do it alone. Send us your best, and we'll do the rest. Families, the best thing you can do to support your student(s) is to ensure they get enough rest, have limited screen time during the week, and attend school regularly.

Our Student of the Week for is Mitchell in Mr. LeΓ³n's 5th Grade Class. Mitchell is an outstanding student who goes above and beyond in reading. It is not surprising to see Mitchell reading a book during class - just because he enjoys reading so much. Mitchell also follows the school expectations and is very respectful to classmates and staff. He is always willing to participate in class and he helps other students when they might need assistance. Way to go, Mitchell! Thank you for being a phenomenal Falcon!
Sign Up for Weekly COVID Testing on Campus
Weekly voluntary COVID screenings resumed this week and will continue to take place weekly on Monday mornings. The more students we have signed up for the screenings, the sooner we can identify symptomatic and asymptomatic cases to reduce community spread.
If you signed up last year, you must sign up again.
