January 2024 News
Happy New Year!
I hope your family enjoyed a restful holiday break and your students are ready for 2024! A great idea for a New Year’s resolution is to set up a morning routine that prioritizes getting to school on time. Children thrive on routines, and having your child at school and in their seat ready to learn at 8am should be the goal. We will close the side door to car riders at 7:55am and students will be marked late after 8am. If your child is absent for any reason, please send an email to your child's teacher and copy Ms. DuFour in the office (ldufour@aacps.org). We love seeing our students, and look forward to outstanding student attendance in 2024.
Mayo Elementary School has earned the 2023 AACPS Wellness School of Distinction Award! The AACPS Wellness School of Distinction Award recognizes schools that demonstrate a high priority for the health and well being of students, staff, and school supporters by going beyond the curriculum to produce positive outcomes for the entire school community. Thank you to Mrs. Lee and the members of the Mayo Culture Committee for their hard work on the application, and Mrs. Tedesco for her work as the parent collaborator. Together, we go far!
I want to thank the PTO for all of the support they have provided for our staff and students. We have lots of exciting things planned for our Mayo Mallards in the new year, please read below for more information and details.
Wishing your family health and happiness,
Mrs. Fox, Principal

Internet Safety Tips
Healthy Screen Time
Experts tell us too much screen time may lead to sleep deprivation, lower grades in school, mood problems, and more. Phones can also create difficult social situations students aren't equipped to deal with. But how do we manage healthy screen times in this technological world?
How can I help my child manage screen time in a digital age?
Cell phones should be off and stored when students are at school - If you need to send a message to your child during school hours, please call the school office and/or email your child's teacher.
Be familiar with what they are seeing - Get to know what they are watching and seeing on programs and in social media so that you can have discussions with them when negative content arises. Keeping lines of communication open is essential to having conversations about cyberbullying, inappropriate content, and how that affects them.
Encourage other activities - You can limit screen time merely by having your children involved in other activities. They aren’t using their phones in sports, music classes, and when playing outside.
Set limits on the device - Along with rules you may have as a family, you can also set limits directly on the device. Set downtimes at night or during school, and use apps with parental controls.
Teach them about privacy and security - Children and teens often don’t think about the far-reaching consequences of posting publicly. Help them understand the need for privacy and how to set limits in their profiles.
Set a good example - Adults are easily distracted by devices too! Be sure your children see you engaged in activities that are not on a device, put down your phone to have conversations and at the dinner table, and talk about what you see online with your kids.
