It is hard to believe that next week ends our first Quarter for the 2022-23 School Year. Over the next two weeks, teachers will work on preparing students for their exams, and for some, this will be their first experience taking a cumulative assessment. During this time, it is important that students are communicating with their teachers via email or Teams for assignments, reviews, questions they may have, etc.

• October 26 - National Honor Society Induction - Invite Only 7PM
• October 27 - Fall Choir Concert 7PM
• November 3/4 - Quarter 1 Term Exams; 1/2 day of school
• November 7 - Term 2 Begins

During the next two weeks, students should communicate with their instructors regarding any missing assignments, clarifying questions regarding content or exam layout, review, etc. It is important that students use their email or Teams to communicate with their instructors outside of the regular class, if need be.

Attendance is VERY important during this time, as many teachers are finishing up assessments, projects are being wrapped up, and reviews are occurring.

Please note, LOCS will provide transportation to and from school during our 1/2 day sessions on November 3rd and 4th.

Students who attend OSTC should plan accordingly, as the LOHS exams are required for successful completion of any course. Therefore, it is the student's responsibility to communicate their absence with their campus instructor.

Quizlet

Quizlet is an online platform allows students to create their own quizzes, flashcards, diagrams, and games; essentially design their own fun, interactive learning experience. Students who are looking for additional resources regarding their topic can also search through more than 250 million study sets and take the material with them wherever they go. Quizlet available via the web or on mobile devices.

ATTENDANCE.....DID YOU KNOW???

• Absenteeism in the first month of school can predict poor attendance throughout the school year. Half the students who miss 2-4 days in September go on to miss nearly a month of school.
• Absenteeism and its ill effects start early. One in ten kindergarten and first grade students are chronically absent, and for these students, this pattern often continues to harm the students academically, socially, and emotionally, throughout their school career.
• Poor attendance can influence whether children read proficiently by the end of third grade or be held back.
• By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
• Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence.
• When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances for graduating.
• The bottom line: Good school attendance is the single largest factor that determines success in school!

The Thespian Troupe is in need of some adults to help out at the Set Builds. Set building began this past Saturday, but there are some dates still available. If you are handy with tools...fantastic! If you are not, but can supervise students that are using tools or have the ability to do some painting...awesome! We need you!! Please sign-up on the Sign Up Genius so we know who can come. If you can't be there the whole time, no worries! Mr O'Meara will take any time he can get!

10th and 11th graders considering the Oakland Schools Technical Campus Programs are eligible for a field trip/campus tour on Friday, November 10th. Please see Ms. Hays or Mrs. Bruno for more information. Space is limited!

OSTC is also hosting a Career Night on December 8, 2022 from 4:30pm-7:30pm at the Northeast (Pontiac) campus.

The DEADLINE FOR INSURANCE COVERAGE IS OCTOBER 28th.

If you have a district assigned device, you may choose to purchase the optional device protection coverage in case of damage to the device during the school year then you will need to complete the REGISTRATION FORM and payment.

This year, students Caitlin Balint, Josh Snyder, Rachel and Shauna Veits will compete during the Michigan High School Figure Skating Season as part of the Rochester United Figure Skating Team.

The season gets underway in November, with their first meet scheduled to take place in December.

"Rochester United is thrilled to welcome back the skaters of Lake Orion High School. We believe they will be a welcomed addition to our well-established team. Rochester United A-Team is three-time defending State Champions, and we are optimistic that with the addition of skaters from Lake Orion, we can again repeat as State Champions!" says, Coach Daniel Palmeri. Each team in the district will compete in three events, working to earn points based on placement. At the end of the three meets, the top two teams from each district will be invited to the State Championships in East Lansing this March. LOHS is looking forward to defending their title.

How about Winter Sports?

Each year, Mrs. Dobbs runs the LOHS Ski and Snowboard club, if your student is interested in learning more about this, there will be an informational meeting in Room F672 at 2:35 pm on November 8th. Students wanting to participate will need to complete the GAP Club forms and the Pine Know Membership registration at the Pine Knob Ski Club website.

The boys’ Dragon United Water Polo team has advanced from the Regionals tournament seeded at third place going into the District playoffs this weekend. This is only the second time in history that the team has made it to the district round, with a season record of 22-9. Dragons United is a varsity sport, currently comprised of 12 athletes from both Clarkston and Lake Orion high schools. Led by head coach Kevin Ott, the team practices here at LOHS and has 3 graduating LO seniors, Kaden C, Ivan D and Garrett R. The Dragons will take on the Eagles of Ann Arbor Skyline this Friday, Oct. 28 and we wish them continued success in post season play!

What is DECA and why should my student join?!

Great questions! DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. DECA members gain 21st Century Skills, are prepared to become leaders and DECA members are motivated for the future! DECA combines leadership conferences and competition this school year to help them be the best they can! I’ve been the DECA Advisor in Lake Orion for 19 years and each year I love watching students grow and achieve things they didn’t think we possible! We have started utilizing School Dismissal Manager (SDM), a program for parents to communicate early student departures. LOHS successfully used the SDM program last year. It is accessible on either computer or smartphone, allowing parents the opportunity to officially submit an early dismissal request without calling the school.

On approximately September 22, you should have received a communication from School Dismissal Manager with additional details. Parents are encouraged to check their designated email accounts. Also, be advised the message might be redirected to your “junk” folders. The welcome email from SDM provides all relevant information necessary to activate and begin using your account.

The Dragon Yearbook would like to offer you the opportunity to say goodbye to your graduating senior. Senior parent ads for the 2022-2023 yearbook are being sold until Friday, December 16, 2022. We encourage early submissions, though, because space is limited.

Ads submitted after this deadline cannot be guaranteed a place in the yearbook.

At LOHS, we strive to be intentional about supporting students beyond just academics. To be successful and well-rounded, LOHS proactively seeks to develop each student’s character traits that will serve them well in the future. The school-wide commitment here at LOHS involves recognizing, dignifying, and rewarding students for demonstrating the qualities of Generosity, Responsibility, Integrity, and Tenacity (GRIT). When staff members witness students exemplifying these admirable characteristics, they write out a “ticket” describing the pupil’s positive actions.

GRIT winners are awarded prizes, which greatly enhances this recognition program and creates excitement and enthusiasm among the student body. We are currently looking for donations from local business (or community members). If you or your business are interested in donating to the GRIT program, please reach out to Rosa Everitt. You may also drop off your donations to the main office or Safe Ed. Donation letters are available for tax deductions.

Past donations have included, gift cards to local establishments, candy, LO gear, fidgets, etc.
