Immunization Requirements
Iowa Immunization Requirements
Jody Pierce BSN RN
Clayton Ridge MS/HS Nurse
Iowa Immunization Law requires:
- All students entering 7th grade to have the Meningococcal vaccine AND a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, or whooping cough) booster before school starts in the fall.
- All students entering 12th grade to have a second dose of the Meningococcal vaccine before school starts this fall. This dose must be given after the age of 16. (One dose meets the requirement if it was received when the child was 16 years of age or older.)
Students WILL NOT be allowed to start school in the Fall of 2022 without proof of these vaccines or a valid exemption on file.
Iowa Law also requires:
- All students entering 9th grade have a dental screening by a dentist or dental hygienist within one year before the start of school, but no later than 4 months after the school year has started.
Please feel free to call or email with any questions.
Having health insurance is critical for our children to thrive at school. There are free and low-cost health coverage options available through Medicaid and Hawki which include coverage for medical, dental, immunizations, prescriptions, mental health services and more. You can have a regular doctor for your child and be protected from unexpected accidents and illness. Many working families qualify; children and teens in a family of 4 earning up to $80,030 may qualify for Hawki. And don’t forget, if your child is already enrolled in these programs, it’s important to renew their coverage every year so they can get the care they need when they need it. The Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) can assist with in-person application assistance for families with children through presumptive eligibility. You may contact your local Hawki Outreach Coordinator at 563-556-6200 or for more information go to https://dhs.iowa.gov/hawki or call 1-800-257-8563.
Kid Captains
Elementary kid captains for the home soccer games April 4 are Mila Allyn and Jack Reimer. The captains were selected by their teacher, Kathy Connelly.
April Fool's Day
Mrs. Palmer had so much fun pranking her third graders today! 😀 They watched a video from “Google” about their “newest product,” Google Nose Beta which allows you to search for smells on Google. (According to Google, the search engine now has a database of 15 million smells! 😉) The kids were sure to try to get Mrs. Palmer back many times during the day!
Mrs. Connelly’s class pulled the broken screen prank on her for April Fools Day! They pretended someone was shoved into the Promethean screen when she was called to the office and another teacher was covering her class.
6th graders this morning had to participate in a “mandatory flooding drill.” They were told they needed to remove their shoes and socks and place them under their desks.
1. Standing Drill #1 is for short term flooding safety. Students are to carefully stand on top of their chairs.
2. Sitting Drill #2 is for long term flooding safety. Students should sit back down in their chairs and put their feet up on their desks. They should get into a fully relaxed position that they could sit in for hours if necessary till any flood waters recede.
They all had a good laugh when Mrs. Scott finally said “April showers bring...April Fools!”

Dr. Seuss Book Bracket in CRMS
During the month of March, middle schoolers participated in a Dr. Seuss March Madness Book Bracket. Each week, advisories spent time reading through these different Dr. Seuss books and voting on which one they thought was the best. Today, the book bracket came to an end and The Lorax was crowned the champion!
Extracting DNA in Sixth Grade Science
Mrs. Jana Kregel
Sixth graders in Mr. Lawrence's class extracted DNA from strawberries last week as part of their study of cells. They smashed strawberries and created a solution of water, salt and detergent to lyse the cells, releasing the DNA. Then they added isopropyl alcohol causing the DNA to clump and separate in the test tube.

Mr. Shane Wahls
The following students participated in a Powerlifting Competition on Sunday, March 27 in Dubuque, Iowa. All 3 students participated in the Amateur Full Power Raw Elite Division, meaning they competed in the Squat, Bench Press, and Deadlift and were not allowed to use anything to assist like sleeves or wraps. Three judges score each of 3 attempts on each lift. The best attempt for each lift is added together to determine a total weight lifted for competitive purposes. Here are the results. As the coach, I am super proud of their training dedication and performance at this event hosted by Ghost Equipment and the UPA (United Powerlifting Association).

National Honor Society Induction
Mrs. Nicole DeGidio, NHS Adviser
Eleven new members were inducted into the Clayton Ridge Chapter of National Honor Society on Thursday, March 17.
The National Honor Society (NHS) elevates a school's commitment to the values of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. These four pillars have been associated with membership in the organization since its inception in 1921.
The objective of National Honor Society is to recognize students who have demonstrated achievement in the following four areas:
Character, Scholarship, Leadership, and Service
All Clayton Ridge sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have acquired a minimum 3.2 GPA will be invited to apply based on scholarship. Eligible students must indicate their desire to be considered by submitting materials demonstrating their accomplishments in the remaining three areas of character, leadership, and service.
Candidates will be considered based upon evidence of character, leadership, and service, in addition to the quality of their essays. Because all four areas are considered in the selection process, a top academic student may not be selected if any of the other areas are lacking.
While selection for membership in National Honor Society is a way for us to honor deserving students, it is also a responsibility. Upon induction into NHS, selected students will be expected to participate in chapter activities including meetings and service projects and to uphold the standards of character, scholarship, leadership, and service by which they were selected for induction.
