JANUARY 31, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
Yesterday, we welcomed band students from Cedes Don Bosco Escuela, a school in San Juan, Costa Rica, to Spring Lake Park High School. Their band and our wind ensemble performed for each other and together. Our guests had the opportunity to tour the building and some were able to shadow our students for a portion of a class. It was a great experience for all.
Our band instructors, Mr. Wolf and Mr. Pagel, do such great work with students. I deeply appreciate the energy they gave to make this international interchange possible for all the students involved. Learning happens in many ways, and I appreciate all the staff who develop ways for students to engage in learning beyond the curriculum and classroom.
We are moving into the second half of the second trimester. Ongoing parent-teacher partnership around student progress in learning is a priority. We still have a couple of ways for families to meet with their student’s teachers yet this trimester. I hope you will take advantage of these opportunities to connect.
- We will have morning parent teacher conference times on February 15. Families can sign up for an in-person, WebEx, or phone conference time with their student’s teachers on February 15, 7:30-11 a.m. at www.myconferencetime.com/slphs. Please sign up for a time by next Friday, February 9 at 3 p.m.
- Each teacher is also scheduling and communicating when they will have office hours this trimester for families to schedule for a conversation.
Course registration for next year is in full swing. Are you talking with your student about courses for next year? Plans for the future? We will wrap up our grade-level course registration information sessions for families this week. Find everything materials, presentations and more on the SLPHS register page.
Please mark your calendars for, and plan to attend, our Explore Your Options event next Wednesday, February 7, 5-7 p.m. There will be information sessions for families of all grades and our teachers will be available in their classrooms to help answer your questions about the courses they teach. We are designing this event to support and inform all families prior to closing our course registration process on Friday, February 16.
Thank you for your support and partnership. One school, one community #SLPPantherProud!

FAFSA delay information; upcoming help session
FAFSA delay: We recently learned that there are significant delays in FAFSA information being processed and given to colleges that will delay student financial aid reports, which in turn, will force students to delay in deciding which college they will attend based off cost. FAFSA is not releasing information to colleges until March, resulting in colleges not being able to share financial aid offers until mid-April, best case scenario. Read more about the NACAC statement on FAFSA processing delay.
FAFSA help session, Feb. 7: Join Financial Aid experts and high school counselors on February 7 from 5-7 p.m. for information on the FAFSA form and time to get help with completing it. The information session will begin at 5 p.m. and the help session will begin at 6 p.m. Complete this RSVP if you plan on joining us.
Earning College Credits in High School
Ever wonder what opportunities your child has at high school to earn free college credits? Parents/guardians, join us on Wednesday, February, 7 at 7:30 a.m. virtually to see what options are available to your child while in high school. There will also be a session on this topic at the Explore your Options event that evening (February 7) from 5-7 p.m. at the high school. We hope you'll connect with us during one of these opportunities.
Women in Engineering event at SLPHS
Our career and college pathways team hosted a Women in Engineering event. Students interested in pursuing engineering had an opportunity to hear from Cole, Jordan, Ramya and Joanna - four engineers. They work at Beckman Coulter, a company that builds medical diagnostic equipment for biomedical research, clinical diagnostics and the pharmaceutical industry. They shared insight into their expertise in manufacturing engineering, biomedical engineering, systems engineering and software engineering along with their personal journeys.
National Signing Day
The winter National Signing Day event is on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 for athletes signing Division I, IAA, II , or NAIA. It will take place at 7:30 a.m. at Spring Lake Park High School.
Culinary Arts fosters passion, skills and possibilities
Chef Patty, a seasoned culinary instructor at Spring Lake Park High School since 2022, fosters a bustling classroom environment where students learn foundational and global cuisine skills, alongside life skills. The program integrates two career and college pathways, enriching students' understanding of the food industry.
Culinary courses span two of the high school’s career and college pathways - Health and Human Services and Business and Entrepreneurship. Through these pathways, students are not only learning about health codes and proper sanitation, but they are also gaining a better understanding of what running a business in the food industry entails.
"Now is the perfect time for students to learn the basics and also get a feel if this is truly an industry they want to pursue," says Chef Patty. "And because food is involved, I know not all students take these courses with plans to pursue a career. That's okay! They are still learning valuable life skills."
We caught up with Chef Patty to learn more about her background, her hopes for her students and future plans for Spring Lake Park High Schools culinary program.
