December 2023
Principal Message
Hello Ottawa Families,
It is hard to believe November is over and it is December. Winter break is just around the corner and will be here before we know it. This is always a busy time in school and this year is no different. We have the PTO Holiday Shop, PHS Madrigal performance, grade level field trips, and on December 22nd, a school-wide pajama day and field trip to the movies.
As a reminder, with the winter weather upon us, please make sure that your child brings winter gear to play outside. We try to get outside as much as possible, so it is important that all students have the proper attire to stay warm and enjoy the fresh "COLD" air.
We are all looking forward to a great month!
Kindly,
Jodi Schreiber

Grand-Persons Day at Ottawa
On Tuesday, November 21, Ottawa hosted Grandparents or Special Persons Day. Students invited and were able to spend time in their classroom with their Grandparent(s) or someone else who was very special to them. The event was a huge success with a wonderful turnout. Feedback from family members who attended was positive and everyone who came enjoyed spending time in their loved ones’ classroom(s). Students did interviews with their special person, read stories or their writing, and/or shared in other fun activities that gave our visitors a glimpse into what a day spent at Ottawa might look like. We look forward to continuing this tradition next year!
Ottawa Student Council
This year our Student Council will be sponsoring three events. In November, student council kids sponsored their first event by organizing and presenting a School-Wide Veterans Day Assembly to honor over 20 veterans in our community last month on November 10th. We had family members, friends, and community members join us for the assembly.
The student council welcomed our guests and provided opportunities for our school to show their thanks to our heroes. Our 4th graders sang "America the Beautiful", two 5th graders shared writing pieces, and our student council wrote a poem that they presented to everyone. The student council kids alternated presenting, and now look forward to another student leadership opportunity in the coming months. Thanks to all that came and showed their support.
Thank You Petoskey Education Foundation (PEF)
We are excited to announce that PEF has accepted mini-grant application and selected or 10 projects to sponsor at Petoskey Public Schools. Throughout the year, PEF provides opportunities for faculty to apply to grants to sponsor different project to support students in the classroom.
At Ottawa, our Students Support Specialist, Kristin Monan, applied for a grant to begin building our calming corners throughout the school and in classrooms. A huge thank you to PEF for granting our wish and supporting our students in a variety of ways. Stay tuned for pictures in the near future!
