Tips for Navigating the Middle School years for Parents
- Know your child's friends. Who does your child hang out with? Follow up on any suspicions that you may have. It is better to be safe than sorry at this time of your child's life. Know where your child is at all times. Be clear and consistent with discipline.
- Make it clear that he/she must follow school rules and policies. Teach him/her to respect people as well as property. Help him/her know right from wrong and what he/she must do when negative temptations come his/her way.
- Encourage him/her to pursue interests and make friends through extracurricular activities. Be certain, however, that he/she selects no more than a few activities so he/she has adequate time for schoolwork. You must help him/her find a balance; this will take compromise and patience.
- Consistently acknowledge and reward efforts at school. Many parents expect the school to provide the incentives for their child's accomplishments. While schools do have a lot of motivation programs, parents need to recognize their child's successes too. When your child works hard, your acknowledgment motivates him/her to persist.
- Be sure that he/she attends school on a regular basis. Even if he/she is absent for illness or another valid reason, he/she needs to keep up with his/her studies. Call the school if your child will be missing a day, and find out what he/she needs to do to make up for it.
- Show interest in your child's studies by talking with your child daily about what he/she is learning and doing in school (don't take "nothing" for an answer!). If you know your child has a project for science, get involved. The same goes for quiz bowl, sports, and music — any extracurricular activities.

A few reminders:
- The tardy bell rings at 7:55am. Please make sure your student is in the building by 7:55am. Students not in class by 7:55am will receive tardy documentation.
- 11:30am is the halfway point in the school day. If your student checks in after this time or checks out before this time, he/she will be counted absent for the entire day.
- All students must be in uniform daily. See the image below for uniform expectations.
NC Law requires one dose of Tdap and one dose of meningococcal conjugate vaccine for students entering the 7th grade. Students without these two shots will not be allowed to attend school after November 1, 2021.
