End of Year Parties and Field Day
THANK YOU to Mr. Myrick and all of our party planners and volunteers, we could not pull this memorable event off if it were not for you. The smiles and laughter means thank you in kid language 😀!
To ensure the safety and security of all students, we have established the following guidelines:
- Volunteers:
- Only six volunteers, who are either room parents or have planned the party, are allowed inside to assist the teachers in prepping and clean up.
- All other parents are welcome to join the end-of-year party outdoors.
- Field Day Volunteers will sign in at the north doors near the gym.
- Security Measures:
- Please understand that only the six designated volunteers can be inside the building during the party. This policy helps us maintain a secure environment for everyone.
- Early Sign-Out Procedures:
- Some classroom parties will end at the close to the end of the school day as will Field Day. Teachers will provide a sign-out sheet for parents who wish to take their child home early.
- Parents should wait in the designated outdoor area(s) while children return to the building to collect their belongings.
- A teacher or another staff member will then escort the student(s) outside to meet their parents.
- Remember to sign your child out before leaving.
Thank you for your understanding and cooperation in helping us ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all!
We are looking forward to celebrating the 2024 Athens-Costello graduates this week.

Whether you have plans to travel or simply relax at home, I hope you find joy and rejuvenation during this long weekend and the unofficial kickoff to summer!
The month of May is bustling with celebrations, retirements, performances, and field trips. have been hard at work learning how to read, study, take notes, and discuss non-fiction writing on animal research. The whole unit was done in research clubs - teamwork and collaboration were essential! The third Annual Costello Zoo was a way to take newfound research skills and knowledge public to share with the school community. This graders also created dioramas on the animals that they researched. The third graders learned that when reading nonfiction, they should share their discoveries with the world...and so they did!!

Your kindness and thoughtfulness have left our staff feeling immensely valued and appreciated. Don't forget to swing by the Costello Facebook page to catch a glimpse of even more wonderful moments from this extraordinary week!
Upstander Program...
The Upstander Program engages students in a meaningful conversations about negative social behaviors that can lead to issues with peers. We are so appreciative to Jamie Kaniarz for facilitating this learning for our 5th graders, valuable lessons to help students communicate and stand up for themselves.
Class Placement Procedures
As the school year draws to a close, we understand that parents may have questions about our grade placement procedures for transitioning students to their next grade level. Our primary objective is to cultivate well-balanced classrooms that provide an optimal environment for every student's growth and achievement. While we are unable to accommodate requests for specific teachers, we encourage parents to communicate any pertinent information regarding their child's learning style or needs via email.
Our dedicated grade level teachers, supported by our Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) Team comprised of specialists including special education, English Language, reading specialists, social workers, and specials' teachers, collaborate to create class lists. Over the summer, adjustments are made as necessary to accommodate changes in enrollment. Teacher assignments will be accessible through PowerSchool a few days prior to the new school year. We sincerely appreciate your trust in our process as we work diligently to ensure the best possible educational experience for every student.
Corn Hole...
Claramae & Hannah enjoyed an extended corn hole game today. Thank you to Mr. & Mrs. Harris for your generous auction donation.
Continuous Improvement...
Our staff has been fortunate to work with professional development experts from Mossflower Reading & Writing Program. One of the pillars of TSD is to enhance learning for our staff through job embedded collaborative learning.
Happy Mother's Day to all the amazing Costello moms! Your love, patience, and dedication shape the future generation. Wishing you a day filled with love and appreciation!

Students are demonstrating perseverance as they tackle their assessments. Our teachers are impressed by their focus and endurance. We extend our gratitude for your efforts in ensuring that students arrive at school well-rested, nourished with a healthy breakfast, and equipped with fully charged iPads and headphones. To maintain testing integrity, smartwatches will be collected prior to testing, and we highly advise leaving them at home during examination sessions. Score reports will be sent home in the fall of 2024, after scores are returned from MDE. Thank you for your cooperation and commitment to academic excellence.

Please see the QR code and link below which will allow you to submit information regarding a special education teacher, general education teacher, ancillary staff member (speech, social work, etc.), support staff, administrator, or any other special educator who has made a positive impact on our students with IEP's or a 504 plan.
We encourage you to submit a nomination for any staff member you feel deserves this special recognition. Please use the link or QR code before May 1, 2024. Staff will receive their certificate with your kind words during the month of May and will be honored in the May special education staff newsletter. We're also hopeful you can honor them at one of your staff meetings or in your communication to your staff and community.

Solar Eclipse...
April 8, 2024
Dear OneTroy,
As you may know, there is a total solar eclipse happening on April 8. Prepare for an awe-inspiring celestial show! With the eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. and ending at 4:28 p.m. here in Troy, it’s important to ensure you're prepared in advance. As the eagerly anticipated solar eclipse approaches, we're thrilled to provide you with some fantastic activities to enjoy while staying safe. Here is how you can make the most of this extraordinary event. Since the eclipse occurs during school hours for middle and elementary schools, some students will have the opportunity to view the eclipse at school. High school students and students at early middle schools will be home prior to the peak of the eclipse. Below you will find information for both home and school viewing.
- Safety Reminder: It is crucial to emphasize the importance of NOT looking directly at the sun, especially during an eclipse. Doing so can cause serious damage to your eyes, including permanent vision loss. Even if you're wearing eclipse glasses, never remove them while facing the sun. Protect your eyes and enjoy the eclipse safely!
- Eclipse Glasses: TSD is providing all students, staff, and athletes with certified eclipse glasses. Glasses will be distributed this week to the buildings, and principals will hand them out on Monday. Please ensure that you and your students wear the certified eclipse glasses to safeguard your eyes during the event. Parents that are interested in purchasing glasses, and please look for glasses that meet the ISO 12312-2 safety standard, indicating they provide adequate protection from harmful solar radiation. Since the eclipse occurs during dismissal time, students will be required to wear their glasses during dismissal and on the bus.
- Viewing from School: For some students still at school during the peak of the eclipse, we are planning for a learning and viewing experience for students to enjoy.
- Pinhole Projection: Create your own pinhole projector for a safe and fascinating way to observe the eclipse. With just a cardboard box, aluminum foil, and a pin, you can project the image of the eclipse onto a surface without staring directly at the sun. Get creative and experiment with different sizes and shapes to see unique projections!
- Observe Shadows Under Trees: During the eclipse, pay attention to the shadows cast by trees. The leaves act as natural pinhole projectors, creating crescent-shaped shadows on the ground. It is a mesmerizing phenomenon to witness and adds another layer of fascination to your eclipse experience!
- Virtual Observatory Experience: If our weather in Troy does not cooperate, or clouds obscure your view, you can explore the eclipse online through a virtual observatory experience or live stream. Many reputable organizations and websites offer real-time coverage, allowing you to witness the eclipse up close without leaving your living room. It's a fantastic way to learn more about this rare phenomenon while staying safe indoors.
For additional solar eclipse information, please check out the following sources:
US National Science Foundation
Please help us by encouraging your child(ren) to wear their eclipse glasses. We hope these suggestions inspire you to make the most of this extraordinary event. Enjoy the solar eclipse!
Kendra Montante
Director of Communications and Strategic Initiatives
We are excited to announce that our Costello students will have the opportunity to participate in viewing the Solar Eclipse on Monday. To ensure their safety during this event, students will be required to wear eclipse glasses while viewing the eclipse.
As the eclipse glasses are designed to protect their eyes, they are quite dark and may make movement difficult. Therefore, students will only be required to wear the glasses while actively viewing the eclipse. At dismissal time, students will have their glasses with them, but they will not wear them until they are safely seated on the bus.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all of our students during this rare celestial event.

Ms. Atkinson-Schwartz has been nominated for the TSD Teacher of the Year, embodying the outstanding qualities of our Costello Team. Additionally, Mr. Frank, the custodian we've eagerly awaited for years, has been recognized by DM Burr as the Employee of the Month! We are truly blessed with remarkable individuals at Costello. Cardinal Field Trip...
Our Cardinal headed to the Troy Preschool this week to read with our incoming Cardinals! What a fun way to kick off March is Reading Month! Looking forward to welcoming all of our new Cardinals next year!
REPORT CARDS WILL BE AVAILABLE THROUGH POWER SCHOOL ON TUESDAY, MARCH 12TH
Report cards can be viewed through PowerSchool on Tuesday, March 12th after 4:00 PM (see directions for accessing report cards below). The report card is another tool we use to communicate your child’s progress. As you’re reading the report, note strengths and celebrations. Where has your child grown over the year so far? Share these specific observations with your child. Then, help set a goal with your child to work on for the next few months. Maybe they need to work on math? Or possibly organization or staying focused? Taking a few minutes to talk through these together can have a large impact on student success.
If you have any questions about your child’s report card, please feel free to reach out. We are always here to partner with you to support your children.
HOW DO I VIEW MY CHILD’S REPORT CARD?
- Log onto the parent portal at https://ps.troy.k12.mi.us

Future Journalists....
We had some brave third grade volunteers from Mrs. Tessoff's class. They had a virtual meeting with Oakland Schools and the Troy Foundation for Excellence in Education. One of the Cardinal journalists not pictured, joined the virtual session with on an out of town trip, such commitment. This meeting was to share ideas on the Change the World Celebration. Participants from all over Oakland County shared their feedback and ideas. Our students inspired the group with this quote...Kids can create stuff and do stuff too, you don't have to be an adult to make a change.
PARENTING QUICK TIPS...

This 8 session series gives students tools to help them confidently stand up to situations of negative peer pressure. teasing, etc. Thank you to Mrs. Kaniarz for bringing this program to Costello! For more information check out Defeat the Label.
Managing Feelings....
Not only do we need to teach students academics, we also know that students need be taught specific ways to manage their feelings. When students experience disappointment this is an ideal opportunity to teach how to respond appropriately when things don't go their way. First, we have to consider what the student's behavior telling us? We determine what the missing skill is; what does the student need?
Teaching these skills before students become frustrated helps them to use the skills when they are frustrated. Parents, you can help us by using some of these phrases at home.
"It's okay to feel frustrated, disappointed, angry or upset, adults feel this way too, but when we feel (frustrated) it is never okay to be disruptive. When you are frustrated you can say:
- "I am upset because_______ I need to take a quick break in a quiet place away from others."
- "I am mad and need to take a walk, jump on the trampoline, ______"
- "I need to play with a fidget to calm down."
- "I am counting to 10 and taking some deep breaths until I feel better."
Here are some steps that we follow when students need support:
Early Intervention (When)
Build relationships, set firm boundaries, provide consistency, routines/schedules and reasonable expectations.
Reinforce….
It is okay to feel frustrated, but it’s never okay to be disruptive.
Caring Confrontation (How)
“I see... (frustrated behavior)” “Can you... (desired behavior)” “Even though...(student’s feeling)”
Caring confrontation is a language of partnership when intervening with a student’s disruptive or hurtful behavior
Protective Plan (What)
Teaching and practicing the skills and strategies that provide support and accountability for the student to help him/her manage their behavior and be successful.
THANK YOU for filling my bucket, I loved reading all of the sweet notes and messages. I appreciate the generous gifts, flowers and thoughtfulness.

PARTIES OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL...
Parties can be a fun time for all students!! Many times throughout the school year, students wish to hold special event parties outside of school. If invitations to such parent-supervised parties are distributed at school, it will be mandatory that all “boys”, all “girls” or all students in the class be invited. If not, distribution of invitations will not be permitted. Many times, one or two students are left out of such events causing hurt feelings, tears and low self-esteem. Help us help each child feel good about him/her by including all in extra activities.
CELL PHONES & SMART WATCHES AT SCHOOL...
- Unless necessary for medical use, cell phones must be silenced or powered off and kept in the child's backpack. Elementary students are not permitted to use cell phones at any point during the school day.
- Smart watches and devices with data series and message/calling capabilities (this includes GPS watches and Apple Watches) must be in "airplane" mode during the school day.
- Devices can be kept in a child's backpack. Students should not be receiving and/or sending communication via smart watches during the school day.
- Students may be required to remove smart devices during assessments.
- The school is not responsible for lost or stolen devices.
Please communicate through the main office with changes in transportation. We will be sure to let your child/teacher know. For your child's safety, the adults need to ensure that the information is appropriately followed. Thank you for your cooperation.

5th Grade Vocal Music Performance...
The 5th-grade vocal music performance led by Mrs. Pyzik was such a success, especially considering it was this class' very first performance of their elementary career since COVID cancelled their first and third-grade concerts. The 5th graders were so proud, it was one of those performances that you didn't want to see end. This was a true testament to the dedication of both the students and their teacher, Mrs. Pyzik. Celebrating these milestones is a joyous event and memorable occasion. We will be sure to share the full video when it is ready.
Grateful for our Volunteers!
Every day, the Costello community is greeted by Mr. Nick and Mr. Dan, who volunteer their time assisting students and families with drop-off. Whether a student needs help with a bag or a friendly hello, they can always count on Mr. Nick and Mr. Dan to be there in sun, rain or snow. Happy New Year!!!
We have had a terrific start to 2024! January is a good time to reflect on the past few months. At the start of the year our staff message from our keynote speakers focused on creating joy and building learning environments that foster a sense of belonging for all.
One of the touching stories that was shared came from Mr. Fred Rogers of Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood. Picture a busy airport, people rushing all around. Mr. Rogers is approached by a child who hands him an ice cube. Attentively listening to the child while holding the gifted ice cube, Mr. Rogers bends down, listens to the child's every word, focusing on the child's story until the ice cube melts. This serves as a powerful reminder of the impact we can make through genuine listening, connection and understanding. In airport chaos, Mr. Rogers demonstrated a sense of calm and gave comfort to the child by doing nothing more than blocking out the noise and listening.
As we kick-off 2024 our staff is working to focus on "ice cube" moments. We invite you to join us. Our daily lives are so busy, what we know is everyone; students and adults; appreciate and value when others take time to just listen.
May the months ahead be one filled with inspiration, joy, and meaningful connections. We appreciate your partnership and are thankful to work with you and your students.
PTO is facilitating the Square 1 Art Program again this year. Be sure to click on the Vimeo link above for all of the details. This would be a great activity to work on during the weekend storm! Flyers came home with students this week.

The learning focused on generating writing across different genres, phonics transfer, and promoting writing with volume while honoring student choice and voice is commendable. These are essential elements that contribute to a well-rounded and student-centered approach to education.
The Job Embedded Professional Development model, inspired by the medical field's collaborative approach, is a thoughtful and effective way to enhance educators' skills and improve student learning outcomes. The emphasis on studying student work, designing targeted lessons, and providing critical feedback in small group sessions reflects a commitment to continuous improvement and a culture of collaboration.
It's clear that TSD and Costello values the importance of learning together and recognizes that collaboration is key to fostering growth for both students and educators. A supportive and collaborative environment is crucial for creating a positive learning experience for all. Congratulations to our staff on this success, such an uplifting experience.
PTO Meeting
Please mark your calendars for our January PTO Meeting. The meeting will be at 7:00 PM on January 8th in the Costello Media Center. We will be discussing and voting for bussing options for our 5th grade camp trip in the fall. Your voice matters. We hope you can participate.
Fleece Donations Needed
Last year, our TSD community made more than 300 fleece no-sew blankets during our MLK Day of Service. Famlies/community members make this possible by donating fleece. Please consider helping us this year with a fleece donation. While you’re out shopping for the holidays, please consider picking up a donation of fleece and sending it to any of our schools with your student. All donations of fleece should be in increments of 2.5 yards (so 2.5 yards, 5 yards, 7.5 yards, 10 yards, etc.) This way, they can match up with another piece without any waste. The earlier we receive the donations, the easier it is for the SSAB Team to prepare. THANK YOU!

🤔Conversation Stems to Push Student Thinking...
Encouraging students to engage in meaningful conversations is a vital aspect of their development, both academically and socially. By providing sentence starters, we aim to scaffold their thinking and help them articulate their thoughts more effectively. This not only facilitates communication but also fosters critical thinking skills. As students become accustomed to these prompts, they often find it easier to express themselves and engage in discussions with greater confidence.
Some effective sentence starters to stimulate thoughtful conversations could include:
- "I agree with [classmate's name] because..."
- "On the other hand, I think that..."
- "To elaborate further, I would add that..."
- "A different perspective to consider is..."
- "Building on what [classmate's name] mentioned, I would like to highlight..."
- "In relation to this, I wonder how..."
- "Connecting this to our previous discussion, I believe that..."
- "One aspect that hasn't been explored yet is..."
These prompts not only encourage students to express their opinions but also promote active listening and response. By incorporating these sentence starters into classroom discussions, we empower students to think critically, articulate their ideas, and engage in more dynamic conversations with their peers. This skill set is valuable not only in academic settings but also in real-world scenarios where effective communication is crucial.
