This week, each of our buildings named their 2022-23 Building Teachers of the Year. This group of educators is outstanding. Being recognized is always appreciated. But being recognized by your peers is truly special. We have more information about each of them in this newsletter. We invite you to join us in congratulating them on this honor.
Next week, CGCSC will begin a two-week Spring Break. We hope you have an opportunity to relax and enjoy time with your families and friends.

CG names 2022-23 Building Teachers of the Year
CGCSC is proud to announce the Teachers of the Year for the 2022-23 school year. Each teacher is recognized for making an extraordinary impact on students and colleagues in his/her building:
Center Grove High School — Amy Wingler, Mathematics
Center Grove Middle School Central — Anthony Bell, Grade 8 Language Arts
Center Grove Middle School North — Patrick Clady, Grade 8 Language Arts
Center Grove Elementary School — Susan Campbell, Grade 4
Maple Grove Elementary School — Brandy Johnson, English as a New Language
North Grove Elementary School — Deborah Norris, Special Education
Pleasant Grove Elementary School — Ciara Hunter, Grade 4
Sugar Grove Elementary School — Courtney Hess, Kindergarten
Walnut Grove Elementary School — Lisa Fisk, Special Education
The teachers in each building select their Teacher of the Year. The overall district Teacher of the Year will be chosen by an outside university committee. The CGCSC Teacher of the Year will be announced at the Teacher Celebration Night in the Center Grove H.S. Auditorium on Wednesday, May 10, 2023 at 7:00 p.m.
Four Center Grove High School Seniors Named National Merit Finalists
The 2023 National Merit Scholarship Program has named four Center Grove High School seniors as Finalists. They are Grant Embrey, Gowthamm Mandala, Walker Millhoff, and Micah Robertson.
To become a Finalist, the approximately 16,000 Semifinalists and their high school had to submit a detailed scholarship application, including information about the student's academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, employment, and honors and awards received. Each Finalist received a Certificate of Merit.
Center Grove choirs sweep national choir competition
Center Grove Sound System, The Debtones, and CG Singers competed at the Heart of America National Competition in Nashville, Tennessee, on Saturday, March 11, 2023. Sound System was awarded National Grand Champions in the Large Mixed Division, with caption award for Best Vocals. The Debtones were awarded National Grand Champions in the Large Unisex Division with Caption awards for Best Choreography, Best Costumes, and Best Vocals. CG Singers were awarded Grand Champion in the Concert Choir Division.
MSC students earn Gold ratings at State ISSMA contest
Five CG Middle School Central students participated in State ISSMA Solo and Ensemble contests for piano and violin. Carina Yang and Ethan Zang received Gold ratings in piano. Joyce Ni and Jamie Ni received Distinguished Gold ratings in piano. Kaylee Holverson received a Gold rating in violin.
CGHS BPA students place in Top 10 at state
Twenty-six Center Grove High School Business Professionals of America (BPA) students competed in the organization's State Leadership Conference in Indianapolis this week. The students competed in a range of categories against schools from all over Indiana.
CGHS student Manas "Belle" Kamath was elected as President of BPA Region 11 for next year. Kamath has provided outstanding leadership to the CGHS team. Read more.
CGHS Robotics team awarded District FIRST Impact Award
Center Grove High School's Red Alert Robotics Team was awarded the District FIRST Impact Award at the FIN Princeton Robotics Competition in Princeton, IN on Saturday, March 11. The award is the highest award given at the competition and qualifies Red Alert for the state competition. The honor is given to a team that makes the biggest impact on the community and does outreach to share FIRST's mission, robotics, and service.
Two Center Grove teachers named Jacobs Educators
Two Center Grove teachers are among the select few from around the country named 2023 Indiana University Jacobs Educators. Erin Brown, 5th Grade teacher at Sugar Grove Elementary, and Katie Jones, 4th Grade teacher at Maple Grove Elementary, were chosen based on their innovative use of technology in the classroom. CGHS students earn Scholastic Art and Writing Awards
The Young Artists and Writers Alliance awarded 35 art awards and 17 writing awards to Center Grove High School students in the 2023 Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition. In art, students earned 10 prestigious Gold Key awards, nine Silver Keys, and 16 earned Honorable Mentions. In writing, students received three Gold Keys, five Silver Keys, and nine Honorable Mentions. Read more.
CGHS journalists take top honors in state competition; senior named finalist for Journalist of Year
The Indiana High School Press Association (IHSPA) recognized two Center Grove High School publications and awarded several students at its annual convention on January 27 at Franklin College. The Trojaneer.com website and the Trojan yearbook won Hoosier Star awards, the highest honor for high school publications in Indiana. Read more.
CGHS senior Jack Forrest was named a finalist for the IHSPA 2023 Indiana High School Journalist of the Year. The finalists were chosen by a three-person panel. Jack is in his fourth year on the staff of CGHS's Trojaneer website and biannual new magazine. He is also a member of CGHS Student Government. He plans to attend Indiana University in the fall where he was named an Ernie Pyle Scholar.
SGES student places 2nd in state essay contenst
Sugar Grove Elementary School 4th Grade student Nora Jansen won 2nd place in the Indiana Statehood Day Essay Contest. Nora wrote a mouthwatering essay about the best foods from Indiana.
The Statehood Day Essay Contest takes place annually in the fall and is open to all Indiana fourth graders. The essays are judged by a panel of Indiana State Library staff and volunteer educators.
CGHS culinary arts teams shine at regional competition; five advance to state
Seven Center Grove High students competed in the SKILLS USA Region 3 competitions at Ivy Tech Community College Culinary and Conference Center on February 3 and 4.
Izzy Felke, Devin McCormic, and Grayson Roberts competed in the Baking and Pastry Arts competition on against 20 other bakers. They earned three of the top five spots to qualify for the state competition in April. Haidyn Brooks, Manuel Lopez, Jesus Tello-Perez, and Brennan Stockbridge competed Saturday against 22 other students in the Culinary Arts competition. Jesus and Haidyn placed in the top 6 to qualify for state. Read more.

Center Grove High School honored 24 sophomores for their strong scores on the PSAT with a luncheon on Thursday, January 26. Read more.
CGHS seniors name state finalists in national STEM competition
A team of four Center Grove High School students has been selected as a state finalist in the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow competition. The seniors, Mia Brandon, Kendyl Brown, Ashley Mitchell, and Brinna Porat, are among just 300 state finalists who entered the competition from around the US. The CGHS team's concept utilizes a recycled Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) geofoam to to fill potholes. Read more.
Wiesmann named next principal of CG Middle School Central
Jason Wiesmann will be the next principal of Center Grove Middle School Central. He will replace Craig Smith who announced in February his plans to leave the position after Spring Break. The CGCSC Board of School Trustees approved Mr. Wiesmann’s appointment at its March 23 meeting.
Mr. Wiesmann has 18 years of experience as an administrator. He is currently the principal of Southport 6th Grade Academy in Perry Township Schools, a position he has held for four years. Previously, he served as an assistant principal and as dean of students at Southport Middle School. Under this leadership, Southport 6th Grade Academy was recognized nationally as a 2022 finalist for the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching’s prestigious Founder’s Award.
“We are very pleased to bring Mr. Wiesmann to Center Grove,” said Dr. Rich Arkanoff, superintendent. “He is a dedicated educator who is passionate about helping students achieve their best. We are confident he will be a great fit for our talented staff at MSC.”
"I am excited to be joining the Center Grove team and look forward to contributing to the school district's continued success," said Wiesmann. "I am eager to collaborate with my new colleagues and to work towards consistently performing and achieving at the highest of levels."
Wiesmann holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Franklin College and a master’s in Educational Administration from Ball State University. He will start at MSC in May.
CGHS Color Guard earns bronze in state competition
Center Grove High School's Color Guard placed 3rd to earn Bronze in the World Class at the Indiana High School Color Guard Association State Finals. The competition was held Saturday, March 18 at CGHS.
CGHS Dance team earns 3rd at State Finals
Center Grove High School's varsity dance team placed 3rd in the Kick category in the Indiana High School Dance Team Association State Competition at Lafayette Jefferson High School on Saturday, March 11. The team also placed 6th in Pom.
CGHS junior claims 2nd state diving title; team finishes 9th
Center Grove High School junior Mia Prusiecki earned her second consecutive state championship in diving at the State Finals meet on Saturday, February 11 in the IUPUI Natatorium in Indianapolis. The team placed 9th overall thanks to strong finishes in several events. Read more.
LaRocca earns Wrestling State Title; CGHS Wrestling places 2nd
Center Grove High School junior Charlie LaRocca was crowned a State Champion in the 113 lb. weight class at the Indiana State Wrestling Championship on Saturday, February 18 in Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. CGHS Wrestling earned the State Runners-up title. CGHS set a state record with 12 state qualifiers. Including LaRocca, five wrestlers made it to the championship round.
CGHS Varsity Coach Maurice Swain was named 2023 4A Coach of the Year by Indiana MAT. The CGHS coaching staff was named 2023 Coaching Staff of the Year. Read more.
CGHS senior wins national championship
Center Grove High School senior Shelby Wingler earned 1st place in the shot put at the New Balance Indoor Nationals in Boston, MA on Saturday, March 11. Wingler was also named All-American in the weight throw.
CGHS senior places 3rd in national competition
Center Grove High School senior Kate Henselmeier placed 3rd in the 400m at the Nike Nationals in New York, NY on Saturday, March 11. Henselmeier also earned the title All-American.
19 senior student-athletes commit to colleges
Nineteen Center Grove High School senior student-athletes were recognized on Wednesday, February 1 for their commitments to continue their academic and athletic careers at a college or university. National Signing Day is traditionally held on the first Wednesday of February. Read more.
