From the Eagles' Nest: STEM Updates
Bicentennial Gift
“No Child Left Outside” is ZCS’s theme for STEM this year. To kick off our outdoor adventure, we had a visit from the Zion Nature Center this week. Each student in grades K-4 was presented with a Bicentennial gift from the State of Indiana, a deed to a small parcel of land in the Children of Indiana Nature Park (CINP). Just as our state park system was a legacy project on Indiana’s 100th birthday, this park is a Bicentennial legacy project celebrating our state’s 200th birthday. The CINP, located in Centerville, Indiana, was purchased and been divided into parcels so that each school child (K-12) in Indiana can have a deed to a small piece of land. Over time, the state plans to restore this land, with the help of volunteers, to its native state for the benefit of wildlife and human visitors. BME students brought their deeds home this week. The land is ceremonially theirs for perpetuity. For more information or to find your child’s land, take time to visit the park website, ilovemyland.org or go to the park and find your child’s land.
Computer Science
All students in first through 4th grades have begun this year’s computer science curriculum through Code.org. First grade students learn to drag and drop blocks in order and quickly begin solving puzzles. Older students are learning how to include loops and nested loops in programs and to draw using angles. All students are learning to debug code with errors in it and to use their mathematical and logical thinking to solve complex problems with efficient algorithms. Students can code from home, too! Log into Canvas with your child. Enter the STEM course and see what the coding curriculum is all about. You might just get hooked, too!

Mark your calendars for STEM Night coming Thursday, November 17, from 6-7:30 p.m. More information will be coming after fall break, but we look forward to a wonderful evening!

School Safety
School Visitor Check-Ins at ZCS
Please be aware that we use a visitor management system known as SafeVisitor. SafeVisitor is a 30-45 second check-in process that cross references against all national sex offender registries and prints a visitor badge. Please be prepared to scan a government issued ID (Driver License) when arriving to campus as a visitor or volunteer. The printed badge should be visible at all times while in the building. Thank you!
Please note: Full background checks are still required field trips. Full background checks cost $15.95 and take at least 7-10 days to process. Limited background checks are still required for lunch visits, volunteering in a supervised area, etc.
**Bullying Video**
All volunteers in our district are also required to complete the bullying module, consisting of a short video and a digital signature as proof of watching the video. This video must be watched for either level of volunteer (Full or Limited). Please click here to visit the BRAVO/Volunteers page where all of these items can be completed.
Smart 911
Boone County has shifted from NIXLE to SMART911. This is a free service that allows you to receive emergency notifications from the county which may include severe weather warnings and traffic alerts. The program will ask for optional personal information that could be used in the event of an emergency situation in your home. Boone County citizens are encouraged to create their Safety Profile with Smart911 today. To create a safety profile and sign up for updates, go to www.smart911.com
