ALLEM Fall 2022 Pledge Drive final week
Dear El Marino Families,
As of Friday, October 7, ALLEM has raised close to $192,000. This is still shy of our goal of $250,000, but we have renewed faith we can get there in the next week! We saw big improvements in participation by classroom, and look forward to seeing even more improvement this week, the last week of our drive.
We have updated our chart of participation by classroom, and have included a column to show the increased participation for each classroom from Friday, September 30. Great work, and let's keep it up!
If you have not participated yet this year, please do so at https://allem.givecloud.co/. While the suggested donation amount is $750 per student, ANY meaningful amount you can give makes an impact for our classrooms. If you have already donated, please get out the word about why you support ALLEM and the TLSPs, and encourage others to participate.
The pledge drive ends on Friday, October 14. Special prizes will be awarded to (1) the class with the highest fundraising amount, (2) the top three participation classrooms, and (3) the classroom with the highest increase in participation from September 30 to October 14.
Thank you, and let's end strong!

Idle Free Schools: Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!
El Marino Language School’s Green 5 Committee is starting an idling reduction campaign this week.
Did you know that if everyone in the U.S. stopped idling for five minutes a day it would be equivalent to taking five hundred thousand cars off the road and saving 1.6 million tons of CO2? El Marino is supporting this campaign and encouraging families to reduce student’s exposure to air toxins that are emitted from idling vehicles.
In the next two weeks you will see new no idling signs posted outside the school. We are also asking parents and guardians to sign pledge forms that they won’t idle unnecessarily. These forms will be sent out by room parents.
Save money and protect the air by turning off your car when waiting more than 10 seconds.
Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free!!
How our very own El Marino Lachman family observed Yom Kippur
We are so grateful that the Lachman family is sharing how their family observes Yom Kippur. Ingrid and Andrew Lachman, parents of 4th grader Charlotte, are members of Temple Akiba in Culver City.
This how they observed:
“On the eve of Yom Kippur we have a big meal because we get ready to fast. Kids are exempt from fasting as well as pregnant women and people with health issues. We attended services and then broke the fast with a traditional Jewish deli dinner of bagels, lox (smoked salmon), latkes, and rugelach cookies.
Because Yom Kippur is the holiest of holy days in Judaism, attendance is high. A lot of temples hold services outside in bigger venues to accommodate bigger groups. Akiba had theirs at Veterans Auditorium and also had services geared toward children. Parents drop off their kids in the youth group services and they can go to the traditional services. It’s a time to atone but also catch up with friends after services when services end and when breaking the fast.
Yom Kippur is a day of atonement for Jews to say to God, family, friends and to others we are sorry for and ask to be forgiven for the bad things we’ve done and wipe the slate clean to be better in the next year. We don’t eat or drink and attend services to reflect and pray for forgiveness and the strength to be a better person.”
Thank you Lachman family for sharing a little bit about Yom Kippur and how your family observes this special time of atonement and reflection.
