HOSA health students take on Be the Match challenge
The Davison High School chapter of HOSA (Future Health Professionals) has taken on a new project this year that will focus on finding potential donor matches for individuals with life-threatening blood cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. Students are partnering with Be The Match®, which operates the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) and is the most diverse marrow registry in the world that works every day to save lives through transplant.
The DCS community can help by donating money to the Davison-specific site at https://wesavelives.bethematch.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=donate.team&teamID=6877. HOSA Club members will also be at the Homecoming game this Friday to provide swabs for potential matches. All HOSA students who assist with the project will earn community service hours for their work.

DTV students, instructor help shape world of broadcasting
DTV students Kalob Hersh and Cooper Austin, along with DTV Teacher Mr. Randy Scott, were asked to speak on a panel for the National Educational Telecommunications Association and Corporation for Public Broadcasting conference this weekend at the Amway in Grand Rapids.
The panel was called "Creating Spaces with the Next Generation" and was designed to help shape the future of Public Broadcasting. Over 400 public broadcasters from across the country were in the room and more watched online during the panel discussion, which took place Saturday, September 9.
"The best part is that the students stole the show," said Mr. Scott. "After the panel, a crowd rushed the stage to get photos with us including the president of CPB and the former US secretary of the Treasury, who spent time with the students as well. I really couldn't believe all of the attention we got after the panel."
Mr. Scott said the activity was a very big moment for the kids and the DTV program.
"The kids gave great answers and really connected with the professional broadcasters," he said. "I really think our students just helped shape how broadcasters will consider, and use the next generation in broadcasting. I know that sounds a bit crazy, but being there really made a difference."
Here is the link to the panel and a little highlight reel, produced by DTV, of course, showing the DTV team's answers to the questions posed to the panel.

CAP Students participate in Leadership and Teamwork Retreat
Students in the four CAP (Challenging Academic Potential) classrooms at Central Elementary participated in a Leadership and Teamwork Retreat at the Abernathy Regional Park on Wednesday. Throughout the morning, students had the opportunity to visit eight stations focused on the Positivity Project strengths of perseverance, teamwork, enthusiasm, kindness, self-control, leadership, open-mindedness and creativity.
"Our goal is to create an event each year that the students look forward to attending and helps us emphasize some of the most important Positivity Project strengths that will be used for building a strong culture of teamwork and cooperation in our classrooms," said second grade CAP Teacher Mr. Ben Montgomery, who planned the activity.
Students could be heard laughing as they tried to move forward in unison on skis at the station designed to teach perseverance. Just across from that group, students were expressing their enthusiasm with a game of introducing themselves while demonstrating an action they enjoyed, like playing video games, sleeping, jumping like spiderman and doing "the dab" dance move just to name a few. As each student finished their introduction, the other students had to repeat it as well as all of the previous introductions and actions.
At other stations, old-fashioned games like Simon Says and Follow the Leaders were used to teach students about self control and leadership, respectively. Tucked away behind the sledding hill, a group of students created a "fire brigade" of kindness by completing challenging tasks like jumping or twirling while dumping water from their cup into a teammate's cup. The trait of open-mindedness was reinforced with an idea borrowed from "Whose Line is it Anyway?" where students were given a prop and had to speak from the object's point of view. At the creativity station, students completed leaf rubbings and made sculptures from items they found on the ground. Last but not least, students learned about teamwork by working together to use hula hoops as "stepping stones" to get across a make-believe field of hot lava.
Don't spill the water!
A fire brigade of kindness.
Teamwork makes the dream work.
Teamwork to get through a make-believe field of hot lava.
Super Creativity!
