Camp Road Cougar News

Principal's Greeting
Hello CRMS Family,
We've had another great week here at Camp Road. This week we were visited by Kwame Alexander, a published author, who was able to share his work and an inspirational message with our 6th and 7th grade students. Our students also participated in grade level Academic Catch Up Days. This was an opportunity for us to celebrate those students who have turned in all of their assignments for the second quarter and provide time for students who needed to make up assignments. It was great to see so many of our scholars outside for extra recess time because they stayed on top of their assignments this quarter.
As we start the 3rd quarter, I want to encourage all of our students to start off on the right foot. Make the commitment now to turn in all of your assignments complete and on time. Make another commitment to follow all school rules and procedures by making good choices. This will help each and every student reach their full potential!
Parents, I ask that you have conversations this weekend with your children about these two commitments, and then regularly throughout the quarter to help them meet their goals.
I am challenging all of our students to focus on not getting any office referrals this quarter. All students that have no office referrals for the 3rd quarter will get a full-sized candy bar from me on Monday, March 27th. I hope that I can buy every single student a candy bar!
Jaclyn Rowehl
Principal

Second Step at CRMS
The Second Step Middle School digital program is a research-based, Tier 1 SEL program for Grades 6 through 8. The classroom-based lessons and activities are designed to strengthen students’ social-emotional skills, such as managing strong emotions, setting and working toward goals, and building strong friendships while avoiding or de-escalating social conflicts with their peers.
All grades are working on: Unit 3: Thoughts, Emotions & Decisions
Students learn how to recognize strong emotions and unhelpful thoughts, and they learn to apply strategies for managing their emotions and reducing stress. These objectives are facilitated in weekly lessons, community circles and classroom challenges.

CRMS Wellness Room
Middle school is a time when students’ cognitive capacities, including abstract thinking and moral reasoning increase. During this time middle schoolers become aware and are especially sensitive to their peers and experience an increased intensity of emotions. Kids are "carrying" a lot in their metaphorical book bag even before they walk through our school doors some mornings.
The Wellness Room at CRMS was created with that in mind–helping students independently re-set, re-focus and return to learning.
Wellness Room Objective:
Students will independently work to self-regulate their emotions, problem solve and/or reset to return to the classrooms recentered and focused, allowing them to re-engage and be “ready to learn.” Counselors will be in the room, facilitating this work.
At any time during the day students can request to visit the Wellness Room for a quick reset. Signed agendas are the entry and exit passes to the room. Targeted maximum time in the Wellness Room is 10 minutes.
What’s in the Wellness Room?
Upon entering the room, students can choose a “what do I need card.”
Problem Solving, Conflict Resolution worksheet
Coloring/Journaling
Fidgets
A quiet space (noise cancellation headphones) or a book
Distraction (from my feelings) puzzles, crosswords, brain games, etc
Mindfulness (yoga cards, breathing exercises, etc)
After choosing a “what I need card” and giving it to the school counselor, students are able to choose flexible seating and use the manipulatives. Ten-minute sand timers are given to students to let them know when their time has expired. After signing out, students can request to see a school counselor if needed.
Science Links social/emotional wellness to Student Gains:
* Improvement in students’ social and emotional skills, attitudes, relationships, academic performance, and perceptions of classroom and school climate
* Decline in students’ anxiety and behavior problems
* Long-term improvements in students’ skills, attitudes, prosocial behavior, and academic performance
School Technology Information You Need to Know...
Students should NOT bring their Chromebook chargers to school. Please charge devices at home each evening. Chargers tend to disappear at school, and we have no way to track them. Students will be responsible for the cost of replacing lost chargers, so please don’t let your student bring the charger to school!
A reminder about the CCSD fee structure for damages and loss of chromebooks:
- Negligent/Accidental Breakage - No charge for first incident per school year $50 per incident for each subsequent event
- Intentional Vandalism - $300.
- Stolen Device - No cost if a police report is provided
- Lost Device - $300
- Lost Charger - $40
Stay in the loop with your child's academics!
