SUBSTITUTE CAMPUS COORDINATOR LIST
Each campus has a set person or people who work with the substitute population. It may be an office manager, an assistant principal, or a financial clerk. This coordinator is in charge of handling substitute assignments, classroom placements, and most importantly time sheets. On the substitute webpage there is a link to the substitute campus coordinator for each campus. Please refer to this list anytime you have questions regarding your assignment or payment for that specific campus. It is a common misconception that the substitute office handles payroll for substitutes. Each campus (typically the office manager) is in charge of submitting time sheets to payroll for all assignments worked on their campus. If you ever believe there is a discrepancy on your paycheck, please be sure to reach out to the specific campus you took your assignments at. Below is a link to the substitute webpage where you can find the Substitute Campus Coordinator Contact List.

SUBSUGGESTIONS NEWSLETTER: STARTER ACTIVITY IDEAS
For those of you who regularly greet students at the door, you know that this skill helps set the tone for the day. One substitute teacher said about this skill, "I had a great experience greeting students at the door. The class stayed on task the entire period. Even the regular teacher was surprised when I left him a note about their behavior."
To increase the effectiveness of this skill, after greeting students at the door, direct them to a starter activity. A starter activity should only be about five to ten minutes in length and allow students to work individually and quietly.
Some ideas for effective starter activities are:
- Have students design name-tags or nameplates for their desks.
- In a math class, you might provide students with quarter sheets of paper and have them write five sentences about how they used math outside of the classroom in the last week.
- Provide students with quarter sheets of paper and have them draw pictures representing what they learned the previous day.
- In younger grades, have students draw pictures of their daily schedule. Then have them draw clocks listing what time they did the tasks.
- Put a large poster of a picture in the front of the room, have students study the picture. After three minutes, take the picture away and ask them detailed questions about the picture.
- Photocopy a worksheet of addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts; have students time themselves on how long it takes to complete a line of equations.
- Write a brainteaser on the board and allow a few minutes for students to try to solve it.
- Provide students with a piece of paper and have them write a letter to the mayor of your city.
- Have students write why their favorite song is their favorite song.
- Ask students to write down their plans for after graduation.
The possibilities are endless for what you can do for a starter activity. It is best if you can relate the activity to the subject you will be covering for the day. Remember, starter activities aren’t busywork. They need to have a purpose and feedback should be provided on student work. Instead of you grading the papers, have students trade with a partner and have the partner write something they liked about the other student’s work at the top of the paper then hand it back to the original owner.
By using a starter activity you will have time to take roll and prepare so that you may smoothly and quickly transition to the first item on the lesson plan. The starter activity will also get students busy, thus decreasing the amount of downtime. Students who are on task don’t have time to create classroom management problems.
For more ideas for starter activities, check out the Five Minute Fillers section in the Substitute Teacher Handbook.
Best Wishes,
Jessica Smith

PROPER TIME KEEPING PROCEDURES-BIOMETRIC CLOCK
Substitutes do not have access to the online web clock and will need to continue using the biometric clock for clocking in and out at the campus.
SUBSTITUTE EXPERIENCE TEACHER FEEDBACK REGARDING SUBSTITUTE PERFORMANCE
As a reminder, you will be evaluated on your performance by the teacher you are substituting for. We've provided the questions that the teachers will answer below, as a way to guide your efforts in their absence.
- Was all classroom work collected?
- Was the room left as neat and clean as it was found?
- Was classroom work explained satisfactorily?
- Did students report that they were treated fairly and consistently?
- Were any disciplinary issues reported?
