A Message from Superintendent Tom Reusser
Dear Students, Staff and Families,
I hope everyone had a fantastic and safe Halloween with friends and family. It is now officially the kick off of the holiday season.
November is a time to reflect and celebrate the things we are grateful for. For me, that is my family, friends and all of the hard working educators in Sutter County. You show up to work each and every day putting in the work to mold the minds of tomorrow.
At Sutter County Superintendent of Schools, I am so thankful for all our employees who go above and beyond to better the lives of students. Our office is providing cosmetology and medical assistant programs, we offer opportunities to earn your high school diplomas and better your English skills, our office provides several special education programs, as well as mental, social and emotional resources for students and their families. The list goes on. The difference our office is making in the world of education in Sutter County is endless, for that I am beyond grateful.
As we celebrate the holiday season, I want to take the opportunity to thank our teachers and staff for all that you do for our students and community. Your hard work and dedication to education are invaluable. Whether you realize it or not, you are making a lasting impact on the futures of our students.
I am proud of all that you do and thank you for your commitment to excellence in education and doing what’s best for students.
Sincerely,
Superintendent Tom Reusser

Shady Creek Outdoor School
Message from Shady Creek Director, Christopher Little
“A river cuts through a rock not because of its power, but its persistence.” –unknown
I would like to start this update by showcasing our events at Shady Creek! It wasn’t just the majestic autumn colors arriving at camp, there were so many new faces at camp this month too. The fun started on October 7th with “Serve Day” with Adventure Church in Yuba City. These 20+ volunteers put in a full day of work on our trails to ensure that upcoming students would have full accessibility to the creek and beyond! Then, the fun continued with our first ever Shady Creek Open House on October 15th -- which was a HUGE success! With over 160 guests in attendance, there were smiles, songs and plenty of outdoor school magic. So many families got to see Shady Creek for the first time, which means so much to me personally. I will forever be saddened for the students that missed their Shady Creek trip due to COVID, but it’s opportunities like this that allow us to reclaim just a little of what was lost. The following weekend was a wedding at camp! It’s always a gift that we get to host guests on such a momentous day. The camp was beautiful, the weather was ideal; overall an incredible day!! Lastly, this past weekend we were fortunate enough to host a SCSOS event! Thank you Danielle Schmidl for bringing us the rock stars of ELOP!! This group of educators are full of passion and full of personality. They really make such a huge difference in students’ lives. It was the perfect way to end such a busy month.
We also served some of the coolest kids on the planet as well!! This month we served:
- Minden Elementary (Near Carson City, Nevada)
- NCSA (Nevada City)
- Luther Elementary (Live Oak)
- Lighthouse Charter (West Sacramento)
- Riverbend (Yuba City)
- King Elementary (Yuba City)
- Lincrest Elementary (Yuba City)
- Poplar Ave. (Thermalito)
- Sierra Ave. (Thermalito)
- Plumas Ave. (Thermalito)
All in all, the weeks of Outdoor School were nothing short of phenomenal! This year’s staff has been on a whole different level and in return, the students are the ones who really benefit. The incredible culinary team that makes up the Shady Creek Kitchen staff continue to bring new ideas to the table. Their thirst to bring these students the highest quality of food and preparation is premier. Next, the grounds of Shady Creek continue to shine as our incredible maintenance team truly embodies the Bachman-Turner Overdrive song, “Taking Care of Business.” The Naturalist team are thriving like never before, churning out some of the finest programming I’ve ever seen! Most importantly, their putting smiles on student’s faces and bringing joy to their spirits, true super hero style. Lastly, my league of incredible leaders, Bethany, Kindy and Satty! These three incredible individuals are my rock and I am so blessed to work alongside such legendary, detail focused women!
But the real treasure is contained in the link below. You will find the most heartwarming student letters, a few photos from our weekend events, and a photo of the Sandhill Cranes flying in the sky. I also threw in couple videos of camp glory! In particular, the letter from “Pencil Beaver” is something that I will cherish forever!
As always, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING THE SHADY CREEK PROGRAM! It is because of your support, we are better and stronger than ever. We are so grateful for everyday at camp. Each day is a brand new opportunity to make a positive impact in the lives of anyone who comes to Shady Creek!
Big love to all – BOOMSHAKALAKA!
Expanded Learning Opportunity Program Team Building Day
Saturday, we had 23 ELOP Consortium Staff venture to Shady Creek for a full day of team building. Chris Little (Yeti) and his team (Cheeseburger, Nighthawk, Star and Quail) did an amazing job engaging staff in a fun-filled day of team-building activities that included working together to conquer the ropes and obstacle courses as well as improving communication skills through guided SEL activities. Staff had the opportunity to hike the beautiful property and were introduced to the infamous birds of Shady Creek: Piper the screech owl, Shasta the bald eagle and Condor the turkey vulture. Of course the day would not have been complete without a personal concert by Sweaty-Yeti and his staff.
