Maize Middle School
October 31, 2022
A message from Principal Mrs. Marney Hay
It's hard to believe that we are in quarter 2 of the 2022-2023 school year! Our PTO and Site Council groups continue to grow. If you would like to be a part of the PTO or Site Council please email me at mhay@usd266.com.
Here is what is happening at Maize Middle School:
All students participate in Passion Project Fridays. Each quarter students choose a passion project or school club to attend. Some of the opportunities for our students include StuCo, KAY club, S.A.D.D., lego creators, trivia games, and many more. Be sure to ask your child what club or project they are participating in.
Maize Middle School is having a food drive October 31st-November 10th. Students can bring items such as cereal, rice, canned vegetables, along with any other non-perishable items. Students will drop their items off in their Eagle’s Landing classroom.
We continue to have students recognized for their hard work with Soaring Eagle’s cards and Positive Office Referrals and the feedback from staff, students, and parents has been amazing.
Our first Maize Middle School dance of the year is happening on Friday, November 4th, from 6-8pm, in the Maize Middle School gym. Entrance will be through the athletic doors on the west side of the building. Costumes are not allowed at this dance. Students with an F in any class for 2nd quarter and students that have discipline issues on the day of the dance will not be allowed entrance. Tickets will be sold during lunch time October 31st-November 4th. Tickets are $5.00 in advance, $7.00 at the door. Students must have their Maize Middle School ID to get into the dance.
There are a couple of ways parents can support their child with classwork and grades. Along with checking grades on Skyward, parents can have access to Google Classrooms. If a teacher is using Google Classroom, teachers can invite parents/guardians to the classroom so parents can view assignments and missing work. If you have any questions about this please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Our social media sites have all the details of what is happening at Maize Middle School. Check us out on Twitter @MMS_Eagles or on our Maize Middle School Facebook page. You can also find Maize Middle School information on our website at usd266.com.

Maize Middle School PTO
It’s fundraising time! This year, instead of several small fundraisers, Maize Middle School PTO has partnered with mybooster.com for one big fundraiser. Mybooster.com is an online fundraising platform that makes it easy and fun for students to raise money for their school. With this method of online fundraising, we are eliminating the task of door to door selling, collecting money and delivering goods.
The mybooster.com fundraiser officially kicked off last week and we have raised $1,500 so far. We would love for every student to participate, and parents can help by spreading the word to family and friends via social media. We have a goal of raising $15,000 (by Nov 8th) - if each student at Maize Middle School gathered just $20-$30 in donations, we would meet our goal. Our intent is to use the money raised to provide funds for large classroom teacher grants and support other school projects.
It is fast and easy to register your student on mybooster.com. Students will earn individual prizes for donation levels, and we have fun all school goals set as well. If our total goal of $15,000 is achieved, we will reward the whole school with a “Mrs. Hay says we can play” day where students will get a half day of rotating fun stations during the school day.
Follow us on facebook (Maize Middle PTO) or Instagram (maizemiddlepto) to stay up to date on our fundraiser progress, updates and fun!
Thanks in advance for your continued support of Maize Middle School students and staff! If you have any questions, please reach out to maizemiddlepto@gmail.com

A Note From The Counseling Office
Eagles Landing
We are excited to share that by extending our Eagles Landing time this year to 30 minutes 4 days a week, we are able to offer a more intentional approach to social-emotional learning, academics, executive functioning, relationship-building, etc.
Second Step
Due to a KDHE grant, we are now able to align with our elementary and intermediate schools through the use of Second Step. We began using the Second Step Program on September 13th. Below are conversation starters for your family to use in order to reinforce social-emotional skills and concepts at home.
7th Grade:
Week of Oct. 31st
Lesson 6: Overcoming Roadblocks 2
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will identify a goal they want to work on, anticipate roadblocks, and develop an If–Then Plan for their own goal.
Question: Think of a time you achieved a big goal, such as learning to drive or graduating from school. Tell your child about your big goal and some of the smaller goals you needed to finish in order to achieve it. Ask your child to tell you about a goal they have.
Week of Nov. 7th
Lesson 7: Advice on Roadblocks
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will put their knowledge about overcoming roadblocks into action by giving advice to a sixth-grader who is struggling to learn something new.
Question: Tell your child about a time you had to try something new to overcome a roadblock, such as asking someone for help or looking at a problem with a different viewpoint. Tell your child what eventually helped you overcome that roadblock.
Unit 2 Information will be sent in a separate communication.
8th Grade:
Week of Oct. 31st
Lesson 6: My Future Self
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will imagine who they want to be in the future.
Question: Ask your child what they want their life to look like in the future. What skills or abilities do they want to have? What qualities or values do they want to develop?
Week of Nov. 7th
Lesson 7: My Path Forward
Summary: In this week’s lesson, your child will envision a path to become their best self by using strengths and skills they already have.
Question: Ask your child what skills, interests, or abilities they want to develop and how you can help.
Unit 2 Information will be sent in a separate communication.

Maize Middle School Food Drive
Maize Middle School will be hosting the annual food drive from October 31st - November 10th. StuCo, SADD, and KAY club have joined forces to host the drive. We will be having a friendly competition between Eagles Landing classes to see which 7th grade and which 8th grade Eagles Landing classes can bring in the most items. Caring Hearts would like specific items to fill boxes this year. Please see the list below for which items to collect. Each food item brought into Eagles Landing will have a point value assigned to it. The 7th and 8th grade Eagles Landing classes with the highest score will win a breakfast party for their Eagles Landing class. The challenge is on!
Grade Checks
OTI Grade Checks Begin
Beginning Friday, October 28th, we will begin weekly grade checks for all student-athletes. If any student-athlete has an F when grade checks are conducted on Fridays, they will be given an "Opportunity to Improve" sheet that lists the class and teacher of the class(es) they are failing. Students will have the opportunity to stay eligible for the following week and work to get all their grades to passing. If on Friday the following week they are still failing a class, student-athletes will be ineligible for the following week and will not be allowed to participate in competitions for the week.
Please contact Mr. Hamilton with any questions regarding this policy.
Nurse Notes
Hello Maize Families!
Just a few reminders from the Health Office:
- If your student carries an inhaler- BE SURE TO PUT THEIR NAME ON IT! We have had multiple inhalers turned in with no names on them. We dispose of them if they are not labeled. I know they are expensive! Also- be sure that you have a Dr. order on file with me if your student carries one!
- We are slowly starting vision and hearing screenings for all 7th graders and all new students to the district. Ask your student if they were screened!
- Please keep us updated on any changes to your student's health status. It is SO helpful to us in caring for your student!
- DO NOT send medication to school with your child unless we have a signed medication administration form on file. ALL medications are to be kept in the Health Office (unless student has a Dr order to carry emergency only medications) All medications need to be in their original container- no baggies!
- Please be sure that your contact information is current and that we are able to get ahold of you! We will only call if it is necessary to do so! It is very important that we can reach you if needed!
