Due to inadequate and unstable state school funding, the District will be reducing an estimated $35 million for the 2019-2020 school year. Based on information available at this time, this may lead to a reduction of 200 licensed positions, resulting in layoffs and involuntary staff transfers. To that end, the Beaverton Education Association (BEA) notified the District of their intent to participate in a May 8, 2019 walkout “Day of Action” event sanctioned by the Oregon Education Association (OEA). The purpose of the walkout is to draw statewide attention to the need for adequate funding for K-12 education after three decades of instability.

The May 8 walkout impacts our ability to safely operate schools. Therefore, we have determined May 8 will be a non-student day, with the exceptions noted below.

• AP/IB testing (to be proctored by administrators and classified staff; transportation will be provided, routes TBD)
• Previously scheduled Outdoor School taking place the week of May 6
• Extra-curricular athletics and activities
• Free student breakfast and lunch at limited sites
• After school programs currently in place (contact provider for hours of operation)
• Students attending Early College High School (licensed staff will not report)

BEA has agreed to a reduction of the contractual work year from 198 licensed days to 197 licensed days. Therefore, May 8 will be an unpaid day for all licensed employees, and the day will not be made up. The savings will help mitigate next year’s anticipated staff reductions.

We support the goal and urgency of convincing the Legislature to make a significant new investment in Oregon schools, however, we regret a walkout prohibits us from safely operating schools and the impact this decision will have on students and families. Therefore, May 8 will be an administrator-directed work day for classified staff allowing adequate supervision of the limited activities outlined above.

Further details will be forthcoming. The Beaverton School District will continue to tirelessly advocate for adequate and stable school funding for our students.

SATO RACCOONS!

Our Second Annual Jog-A-Thon better know as Sato's Raccoon Run is a just around the corner on Friday, May 17th, 2019! The Jog-A-Thon is a school-wide event promoting fun and fitness while raising essential funds for our school. Students will solicit pledges/donations, then run, jog, or walk their way to the finish line, generating funds and Raccoon Pride! The money raised will support programs that directly enrich students' education. Art Literacy, OBOB, Voyagers, STEAM Night and field studies are some of the programs & events made possible by the Raccoon Run. The fifth graders are raising money for their year end celebration and SECO will purchase iPads for the Tech Lab Reading/Hearing Impaired Stations in the library.

Sato is using an awesome web-based fundraising system PledgeStar. PledgeStar makes donation requests easy for you, your family & friends and gives you the ability to share your child's PledgeStar page in your social media. Another great feature is the ability to make secure credit card donations online. Go to http://pledgestar.com/sato to register you Sato Raccoon! All children enrolled in Pledgestar are entered in the Sato Raccoon Run Raffle. Raffle prizes are on display now!

Assigning Sato students to their classes for the next school year is an important responsibility. Our goal is to place students in a learning environment in which they can succeed. Classroom teachers and specialists provide important input into classroom make-up. They spend time with students in the classroom and other school environments and are aware of student needs, abilities and learning styles, as well as friendship considerations. For this reason we have an extensive process by which we collaboratively consider the following criteria as we organize classes for next year:

• Balance between boys and girls

• Combination of students who may have a positive or negative influence on each other’s learning and play

• Balance of students with individualized education programs, academic achievement and second language needs

• Balance of social maturity

We recognize that as parents and caregivers you are your child’s most important advocate and teacher. We want to offer you the opportunity to provide information on your child that may not be directly available or observable in the school environment. You may provide relevant educational information about the specific needs or learning characteristics of your child by completing the form on the next page. We are requiring that all input be in writing in order to protect the integrity of our process. Please do not request a specific teacher. Individual teacher requests cannot be considered because student balance is first priority in class make up and because we can have changes in staffing and the number of classes at grade levels over the summer. Your information sheet will be taken into consideration while the team makes classroom assignments. While we work to honor the information you provide, the final placement decision is made by the school.
