Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
September 29, 2023
Dear Sanborn Families,
It is hard to believe that October is right around the corner! Students and staff have been engaged in meaningful learning activities throughout the month of September. Additionally, baseline assessment information was collected in order to determine the instructional needs of each student. We also had a lot of fun this month during the 75th Birthday Party that was held on September 14! Thank you to everyone who was able to join us for this wonderful celebration!
Golden Paw Awards are given to classrooms who exhibit the three tiger traits: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. During the month of August, I received 51 Golden Paw Awards in my mailbox! I am excited to share that Mrs. Hunt's 3rd grade classroom, and Ms. Volkmar's 4th grade classroom were the August winners and earned an extra recess with me this week. I have many Golden Paw Awards collected for the month of September and I can't wait to announce those winning classrooms to all of you. Thank you for your support of our positive schoolwide expectations!
We are looking forward to a wonderful month of October at Sanborn. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to your child's teacher, myself, or Ms. Sarli, our assistant principal. We look forward to another wonderful month at Sanborn!
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal

Attendance Information
Halloween Celebration Guidelines
Sanborn will celebrate Halloween on Friday, October 27. AM Kindergarten will have their parade at 9:30 a.m. followed by their celebration. ECDEC, PMKindergarten- 6th grade will have the parade at 12:45 p.m., followed by the classroom celebrations. The parade route is as follows: We will exit Door 1. We will travel west for one block (past Cutting Hall) and turn south on Benton Street. We will turn east on Slade Street to make our way back to Sanborn School. We will re-enter Sanborn School through Door 1. Families are welcome to watch the parade outside as we walk in front of Sanborn School or along the parade route. The outdoor parade is weather permitting. If we are unable to walk outside due to the weather, we will let families know the morning of October 27.
Teachers will be reaching out to families soon to collect $5 from each student to help provide activities for the Halloween and Valentine's Day classroom celebrations. If you need assistance with this, please reach out to your child's teacher. We are finalizing details about parent volunteers for the celebrations and will reach out to all of you soon.
Students are welcome to wear costumes for the parade and parties as long as they follow the District 15 Halloween costume guidelines. Specifically:
Children should not wear bloody, gruesome, or especially scary costumes. Costumes involving fake blood are not allowed.
Actual weapons, look-alike weapons, toy weapons or weapon-like objects are not allowed.
Masks that cover the face and head are not allowed.
Costume make-up is allowed provided it does not cover the student’s entire face. Staff members must be able to identify students.
Costumes that could be offensive or perpetuate a stereotype about someone’s culture, gender, heritage or religion are not allowed.
We are aware that some families do not celebrate Halloween or Fall Festivities. If you wish for your child to not participate in the parade or classroom celebration, please reach out to your child’s teacher.
Lastly, students can wear their costumes if it is not a huge distraction in class during the day, or there will be time to change into costumes after lunch. Please keep in mind that students will be going outside for recess as long as the weather cooperates on this day. AM and PM Kindergarten students should wear their costumes to school.
More information about Halloween will be shared with families as we get closer to October 27!
From the Art Room!
Here is what is happening in art straight from our students!
In bilingual kindergarten we are learning art stations of drawing, cutting, tracing, and working with Mrs. Letellier on our projects. We made a 3D rainbow and we are finishing a color wheel lion.
"In 1st grade we are doing art stations. We also do art songs. This month the projects we made are rockets using lines and colors(ROYGBIV) and we started making our next project of apples using patterns of lines and shapes. We practice cutting, coloring, and drawing shapes."

From District 15 & Sanborn School- School Safety Information
Sanborn will be participating in two fire drills next week:
Tuesday, October 3, at 9:00 a.m., and
Tuesday, October 3, at 1:30 p.m. with the Palatine Fire Department observing the drill.
Safety Drill Opt-Out
District 15 is strongly committed to school safety. Each year, schools are required by the Illinois School Code to conduct the following drills:
Three evacuation drills. One of the three evacuation drills must be supervised by the fire department.
One bus evacuation drill.
One severe weather/shelter-in-place drill.
Two law enforcement (lockdown) drills. One of these two law enforcement drills must be a staff-initiated lockdown. The schools also conduct an annual drill review meeting with principals and representatives from police and fire departments to continuously improve each school’s readiness to respond to an emergency and/or crisis situation.
House Bill 2400 (The School Safety Drill Act) states:
All lockdown drills will be announced to all school personnel and students prior to the commencement of the drill.
Schools will provide sufficient information and notification to parents and guardians in advance of any lockdown drill that involves the participation of students.
Schools will provide parents and guardians an opportunity to exempt their child for any reason from participating in the walk-through lockdown drill.
Schools will provide alternative safety education and instruction related to an active threat or active shooter event to students who do not participate in a walk-through lockdown drill to provide them with essential information, training, and instruction through less sensorial safety training methods.
Building administrators will notify families of upcoming drills at least one week in advance of the drill. If you prefer your child does NOT participate in the yearly required lockdown drills, please complete this form. Please submit one form for each of your children you are opting out. Sanborn School will be participating in a Hard Lockdown Drill during the week of October 16, 2023.
National Emergency Alert Test - October 4 at 1:20 pm
On October 4 at 12:20 pm, a national emergency alert will go out on every TV, radio, and cellphone in the United States. As this alert will take place during a school day, we wanted everyone to be aware of this TEST emergency alert before its scheduled date. The test will last approximately one minute and will not be repeated. Staff will pause instruction for the minute it takes place and resume once the alert has passed.
We will share this information via our school announcements the week of the TEST so students are prepared when the distinctive emergency tone sounds along with the following message, “This is a nationwide test of the Emergency Alert System, issued by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, covering the United States from 14:20 to 14:50 hours ET. This is only a test. No action is required by the public."
On cell phones, it will come as a text message, “THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System. No action is needed.”
Phones that have the main menu set to Spanish will see the following message, “ESTA ES UNA PRUEBA del Sistema Nacional de Alerta de Emergencia. No se necesita acción.”
While it is not ideal that this test is taking place during the school day, following the recent situation in Maui, we all can appreciate an emergency notification being tested to ensure it’s working properly.
