CELEBRATIONS
Great things are happening at WCS!
On Thursday afternoon, WCS hosted the Sagadahoc County Spelling Bee. We welcomed two contestants from Woodside Elementary to join our two contestants. After a grueling 10 rounds of competition, the Bee champion was victorious. While the champion is a student from Woodside, both of our Woolwich contestants made a strong showing and we are very proud of both of their efforts. The winning word? "Literature."

REFLECTING ON REFLEXES
On Friday, a group of fourth and fifth graders from FMS, PES, and WCS returned to the Patten Free Library for a deep dive in learning about the reflexes. Students learned about why we have reflexes and the parts of our body responsible for signaling us to respond to various stimuli. We also discussed primitive reflexes in infants that we outgrow, reflexes that are important throughout life, and response time to different types of stimulus. Students tested their reflexes with a few hands-on experiments as well!

THINGS TO TALK ABOUT
- Recently WCS Library students have been learning about the Caldecott Medal, which is given annually to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Our K-5 students participated in a Mock Caldecott contest; they read several contenders for the medal, discussed the illustrations and then students chose their favorite. We are pleased to announce this yearโs winner is Big by Vashti Harrison!
- This week we received a supply of COVID test kits for distribution to families. If you would like a free test kit (each box contains two tests), stop by the front office or send your student to the health office to pick one up! We continue to follow the CDC guidelines for COVID which can be found here. Wash those hands and stay healthy!
- We know that Valentines Day can be a special holiday for students. At WCS we try to strike a balance between recognizing this and keeping consistency in our academic day. Please make sure you reach out to your student's teacher before sending in food or valentines for the classroom. As a reminder, any food items that are intended to be shared, need to be in the original packaging and nut-free. Thank you for helping us keep our focus on the important work students are doing each day! ๐
