Around LISD......
National Coaches Day is Today!
Friday was National Coaches Day, and all of our Coaches are stars. Of course, there are all kinds of coaches, but Friday was set aside for athletic coaches. These coaches are our "Stars" and are significant in guiding and inspiring our students to excel in their daily athletic events. We want to take today to show our appreciation!
It's National School Lunch Week!
Are you hungry? LISD is celebrating National School Lunch Week this week. Our LISD cafeterias #expectexcellence & know the importance of a healthy school lunch in a child's life. A healthy meal impacts learning inside and outside the classroom. Thank you to Steve Croyle and all our Cafeteria heroes for making lunch great every day! We appreciate you!
Physical Education
Shop Til You Drop
Mrs. Bednarz's class was spotted at United purchasing items to make Trail Mix. Students learned where to find items in the store. They learned that they had to stick to their list and budget. They learned to take turns too! They were headed back to South Elementary to use their measuring skills to make the Trail Mix for all 3 classes, that also go to visit the store. What a great lesson on so many levels!
BBQ Team
The LHS BBQ Team prepared and competed in the Career Academy High School BBQ Team CookOff in Amarillo over the weekend. They practiced several times on campus and even fed the faculty! Under the direction of Culinary teacher Khris Oaks and Assistant Principal David Burton, these Pit Masters took this project-based learning to another level, learned non-traditionally, gained some great life experiences and work ethics that will enable them to have a career after high school, and had fun with friends. Keep on cooking, kids!
Ag Awareness Day!
Fourth-graders from South & Capitol experienced Ag Awareness Day again this year! Each year, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension in Hockley County hosts Ag Day, where students see many stations covering subjects from water and soil, cotton and farm animals, electricity, keeping Texas beautiful, and everything else between the dirt and the sky. Their focus is teaching agricultural production and environmental stewardship,#ExpectExcellence foods you eat. Thank you for the free lunch from the Agriculture Awareness Committee too! We appreciate you!
ABC Present to the Class
ABC Kindergarten students in Mrs. Saenz's class were caught on a scavenger hunt for letter sounds to make words. Mrs. Saenz #expectsexcellence and challenged groups to find letters, blend sounds to form words, make the words, and present their words to the class. There are so many good things about this lesson! Don't you wish you were there to hear these Littles give their presentations?
Family Foam Fun Run!
ABC hosted their Family Fun Foam Run last week! It was a blast...and wet! Thanks to Adam Oliva for the foam machine and Zack Hernandez for the extra work that made this evening successful! A good time was had by all and everyone got in a little exercise too!
Suicide Prevention
LHS Freshmen learned about Suicide Prevention today. LHS Counselors Stacey Waddill & Susan Smith brought Robby & Sheridan Brooks to visit with LHS Freshmen about suicide & how one final decision should not be the only story you leave behind. Their moving message was that there is always someone who cares and is willing to help you when you are down. They provided a detailed look into the family that is left behind after a suicide and explained that it's OK to not be OK, to stay because your life matters, and choose to keep going. If you need to talk to someone, reach out to a teacher, counselor, friend, or parent.
All-Region Choir!
LHS Choir Director Amy Bayer #expectsexcellence and took 16 students to the TMEA Small School All-Region Choir Auditions at Lubbock-Cooper High School. This is the first audition in the All-State Choir process. She states, "I am so excited to announce that 11 of those 16 students were selected as members of the All-Region Choir." To make the All-Region choir, students have to be one the top 14 singers in their section. We are so excited to say that this is the largest number of LHS students to make the All-Region choir since 2019. These students will perform with the All-Region Choir on November 4, at Monterrey HS. They will also compete at the Pre-Area Auditions on November 14. Mrs. Bayer says, "I am so proud of the effort the students put into learning this music and performing at a high level."
