Greetings AOC Families,

Happy New Year! Welcome back to school! Here is the student bulletin. Spring Student Schedules are available for students/parents to view via Infinite Campus. Please click here for instructions on how to access your student’s schedule and be sure they are logged into their “hartdistrict” google account. Parents can also access this information through their own Infinite Campus account that was created for OLR at the beginning of the school year; click here for parent instructions.

With the number of illnesses increasing in recent weeks we recognize some students may not be able to return on Monday. If your student has any symptoms of illness, please keep them home and reach out to our attendance technician Mrs. Laliberte by phone (661-362-5211) or email at jlaliberte@hartdistrict.org Students who are out, but well enough to work from home, should follow assignments on each teacher’s Google Classroom page.

• January 3rd- First day of COC winter session (for upper grades only)
• January 16th- Martin Luther King holiday, no school
• February 3rd- 7:30am-10am, 9th grade PE testing. Dress in PE Clothes for the morning.
• February 4th- Last day of COC winter term
• February 6th- First day of COC spring term (all students)

Outgoing Board President Joe Messina was thanked for his year of service as president at this week’s Regular/Organizational Board Meeting.

Governing Board officers for 2023 were elected at the Organizational Meeting, and they are as follows:

Coffee Kiosk will be open Monday to Thursday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Please stop by for your favorite specialty coffee or tea and breakfast pastry.

Do You Want to Make a Difference? The National Geographic Society is launching its Slingshot Challenge. In order to participate, any student between the ages of 13 and 18 needs to create a one minute video "with your solution to our current environmental problems." The creator of the winning video will receive $10,000. If you are interested, please access the electronic version of the bulletin on the AOC website or Dr. Fine's Sunday evening Acorn and click on the word participate in this sentence.

ROOTS is seeking new members!! It is not too late to join the ROOTS parent organization!

The Academy of the Canyons is a unique and wonderful school with a strong sense of community. Roots nurtures many traditions at AOC—past events have included field trips; a PSAT breakfast; refreshments for other school functions; homemade food for teacher appreciation week. Roots is committed to supporting students, teachers and staff whenever the need may arise.
We can only grow a strong Roots organization to support our school community through the generous donations of funds, time and talent from our AOC families. The amount of donations we receive will determine how much we are able to do. Please consider supporting Roots financially. If we all donate a little, that money adds up and goes a long way. Every penny that is donated stays at AOC to provide support for our AOC community.
We would love for you to be involved in the Roots organization! Please watch your emails from AOC for information on our upcoming meetings and events. Everyone is welcome! Due to the current COVID-19 situation, there will be changes this year—we will still be here to help teachers, staff and students as much as we are able to.

Located on the campus of College of the Canyons, AOC is proud to be the middle college high school in the William S. Hart Union High School District serving students 9th-12th grades in the Santa Clarita Valley. Students have the opportunity to earn between 24 and 44 transferable college units, prior to receiving their high school diplomas. Upon graduation, the majority of Academy students pursue their post high school education by continuing at COC and completing their college transfer requirements in only one year after high school. Other AOC students go directly into a four-year university, bringing their community college units with them and placing themselves well into their freshman and sophomore years at the college level. While attending AOC as a high school student, community college tuition is waived for established California residents.
