School Counseling: The Happenings

Spring-ing Forward!
Parents and Guardians,
It's been a few months since my first newsletter, and I'm not entirely certain that these newsletters in subsequent years will follow the same release schedule, but for now I feel that it is a good time to give an update to you all on how things have been going with the School Counseling Program at Michael Anderson Elementary. As I stated previously, these newsletters are meant to open communication between myself and our school families and the community, so please take a few minutes to read the latest updates below. If you would like to talk about the program or your students at any time, my contact info is listed at the bottom. Thanks!
Seth Sammons
New Ideas
Not all students are comfortable with walking up to a trusted adult and asking to talk, but that shouldn't prevent them from the opportunity. I am finishing up two School Counselor Mailboxes to be posted around the school as another means of communication. By leaving me a note with their name and classroom teacher, I will work to make sure that students always have that opportunity to talk.
Development & Trainings
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a professional development course provided by the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC). I was joined by four other MAE staff members as a means to continue to learn how to best support military students and their families as they transition both in and out of our school community. I took a lot of new information and ideas away, and look forward to making positive changes moving forward!
Base Buddies Update
Base Buddies has had six successful meetings since it started up just before Winter Break! We have already seen new students join and some students leave the group, but it has remained relatively small until now. If your student has a parent or guardian who is deployed or will be deploying soon, please reach out to myself or the front office for a permission form and more information on our new student group.
New Website
There are many ideas for the School Counseling program that I am working on getting off the ground, but this was one of my higher priority projects. I wanted to have a counseling website that provides current and interested military families with a look into: 1) What a School Counseling program is, and 2) What it is doing for the growth of our school community. So I found a way to put one together (using the help of Google Sites) that I will update as often as I can with information such as the focus of our classroom lessons, a list of family resources, and hopefully even some insightful year-end program data. To view the new website, you will find a link on the Counseling page of our MAE school site, or follow this link:

In Conclusion...
To learn a little more about me and what my role at Michael Anderson looks like, head back to the MAE website, click on Counseling under the Academics tab, and read the first edition of Counselor's Corner. In an effort to keep you informed of the School Counseling Happenings and ways that I am reaching students, staff, and families, I will update and make this newsletter available 3x/year (Fall, Winter, Spring). If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me via email or phone, or set a time to stop by for a conversation to guarantee my attendance!
