Ohio Music Education Association Solo & Ensemble
Last weekend 21 members of the Steele choir program that participated in the Ohio Music Education Association Solo & Ensemble event held at North Ridgeville High School. This event involves students picking a piece of music from a required list provided by OMEA. They then perform this music for a judge who critiques their performance, provides feedback, and assigns a rating. Of our 16 events at this year's solo & ensemble, 13 of our events received the highest rating of "Superior!" All of our students dedicate time outside of the school day to teach themselves the music and rehearse for this performance. They all made tremendous progress throughout the experience and were incredibly successful in their performances. Congratulations to all of these hardworking students for their dedication and growth!
Comets Live
COMETSLIVE! is a team of Steele students that work together to produce live content throughout the Amherst School District. These student-run broadcasts cover sporting events, music concerts and award presentations and you will find them wherever the action is. The team has produced over 100 events this school year and is among the leaders in the State for the amount of content, subscribers and views of any school district. As a member of the COMETSLIVE! Broadcasting team students learn how to create broadcast quality content whether their interest is in front or behind the cameras. All areas of production are covered including producing and directing, computer graphics, camera operators, announcers and spotters. In addition to these specific skills students learn important soft skills such as communication, leadership, teamwork and troubleshooting. Students have fun and enjoy highlighting the accomplishments of their fellow classmates.
Students are eligible to apply for the team in 7th grade and nearly all of them continue to participate throughout their high school career. The majority of the COMETSLIVE! student team are involved in athletics, music or other extra-curricular groups and we are able to work around their busy schedule to sign up for events. In addition to the fun and excitement of running a live broadcast, high school students are also paid employees of the district. This leads to a highly competitive application process that opens up in April of each year. For more information about joining our team please contact Mr. Cogdell at doug_cogdell@amherstk12.org.

Department News: Math Department
The second semester is off to a good start. The Math Department did a second round of MAP
testing to look for areas of growth and areas of need to help guide instruction as the school
year continues.
Scheduling is upon us. Teachers have given students and their counselors their course
recommendations for next school year. If you have any questions about your child’s
recommendation, please reach out to their teacher.
For students leaving Geometry, please take the extra time to look over the course of studies.
We do offer alternative pathways in replacement of traditional Algebra 2. The one course is MMR
(Mathematics Modeling and Reasoning). It is an approved course by the Ohio Deptartment of
Education as a replacement to a traditional Algebra 2 course. Based on what your child’s plans are
for the future, this could be a great option.
The second semester and especially the third quarter are traditional some of the most difficult
times of the year. Be sure to do what you need to be doing and make the home stretch of the
school year less stressful. Communicate with your teachers as we are here to help.
