Safety Drills
This morning, Roosevelt conducted the first state mandated safety drills of the 2023-2024 school year. In total, there will be six fire drills, four lockdown drills, and three tornado drills (only in the spring) during the school year. The purpose of doing safety drills is to practice procedures and educate students on what to do in the event of a real emergency. Classroom teachers take time to discuss procedures in a child-friendly manner prior to the actual drills. Members of the Lakewood police and fire departments may be on hand to provide additional assistance and feedback. Thank you for your support in our efforts to ensure school safety.

Important Message About Dismissal
Our south facing doors are only intended for students who walk home from school. Do not park and walk up to the doors. Adding additional traffic and parked cars on Bayes and neighboring streets creates unnecessary congestion and an extremely unsafe situation for our families and neighbors. It also blocks residents from accessing their driveways.
Before and After School Playground and Conduct Reminders
As outlined in the school handbook, we do not provide supervision of students prior to 8:30am and after 3:05 p.m. Please remind your child that he/she is expected to go directly home after school. Students are not permitted on the playground before or after school from 3:05-4:00pm without adult supervision. The playground is closed when it is being used by YMCA after care from 4:00-5:00pm. Children having difficulty with appropriate behavior before or after school may result in school discipline.
Cell Phone and Personal Electronic Device Reminder
Student personal cell phones/electronic devices shall be turned off and put away in backpacks while on school property. If a caretaker needs to contact a child, please contact the school office at 216-529-4224. Thank you.

Party Invitations
Please do not send invitations to children's parties to school to be distributed. It is recommended that parents get to know your child's friends and their families, making exchanging invitations natural and convenient.
Birthday Treats
Should you choose to send a treat for a special occasion, please schedule it with the classroom teacher ahead of time, and drop the treat off at the office. The teacher may set aside a few minutes for the treat, or they may send it home. For the health and safety of our students, treats must follow these guidelines:
Treats should be small and store bought. This allows us to avoid concerns over food allergies because the ingredients are listed on the package.
Treats should not require utensils or need refrigeration. Treats that need to be cut into pieces are not acceptable.
Families should consider sending a favor or small trinket instead of food.
Please save decorative items (balloons, flowers, etc) for your home.
We reserve the right to refuse a treat that does not follow these guidelines.
Attendance + Engagement = Success!
Excessive Absence is defined as (1) absent 38 or more hours in a month with or without an excuse or (2) absent 65 or more hours in a year with or without an excuse
Habitual Truancy is defined as (1) absent 30 or more consecutive hours without a legitimate excuse, (2) absent 42 or more hours in one month without a legitimate excuse, or (3) absent 72 or more hours in one year without a legitimate excuse.
*Hours also include total number of minutes tardy to school and early dismissal.
September Lunch Menu
Cafeteria Snack
Students have the opportunity to purchase a "snack" in the cafeteria, which includes chips, fruit roll ups, ice cream, etc. In the past, we have noticed that some students eat little of their packed or hot lunches, and mainly eat the snack. Please have a conversation with your child if he/she purchases snacks, or limit the number of days that you allow a purchase. Our voice only goes so far!
