Robins K-8
October Newsletter
A Message from the Principal
Hello Families of Robins K-8 students,
It’s October and time is passing by very quickly! We had our first student of the month “popcorn” celebration and looking forward to the next one. Our school celebrated and recognized the “National Hispanic Heritage Month” and after fall Break we will be honoring the “National Italian American Heritage” month and “National Filipino American Heritage” month, for the remainder of October. We always invite parents to come join in on our school wide celebrations. So, if you have a favorite story to about your heritage and/or culture, please arrange to read it to students in the library!
This quarter, we will focus on providing interventions in the areas of reading and math for our students. We have noticed an increase of students that are struggling in their grade level with grade level materials. We will be continuing with our facilitation of our NSGRA (Next Step Guided Reading Assessment ) for all students. This assessment helps us to pinpoint a student’s reading level and we share that with students as they change levels and increase their reading throughout the school year. Attached to this email you will find a handout of the reading levels and a reading tips sheet for parents. We want to help our students understand their role in their academics and educational future. IT begins with taking responsibility for yourself and being responsible for your daily work requirements. Please continue to encourage your students to be responsible as it will help them be successful this school year. We are hoping that the benefit will show in their grades, classwork, and state assessment scores, but more importantly in their gained confidence regarding their individual skill level.
We just completed our 1st District Benchmark Assessment in Reading and Math for grades 2nd-8th and DIBELS reading screening for grades K-3rd . Once we have results, teachers will share with students and parents the performance levels of each student. We will take the district benchmark assessment 2 additional times prior to the State Assessment in the Spring. These Benchmark tests are great indicators for us as we determine what additional support a student may need and/or how we can challenge the student to enrich their learning.
This month of October is full of exciting school events. We have our Fall Break during the week of October 9th. We will have picture retakes on October 27th and please remember that October 25th is a professional learning day for the staff and there is no school this day for the students. Please be on the lookout for flyers announcing our October 31st Annual Halloween Parade (details listed below in the newsletter, dress code still applies). We received a donation of a large quantity of Pocky snacks from
SEBA (Supporting Education Business & Achievement) founder. The donation was provided to help provide monetary support to the school. We will be selling boxes of Green Tea Matcha and Coco Banana Pocky boxes for .50 cents a box after school daily until supplies are gone. Thank you in advance for your support.
Halloween Parade – October 31st
We will have a Halloween parade and all K-8 students are able to dress up and participate in the parade. The parade will start at 8:00 a.m. Students report to class for attendance first and then proceed to the parade with their teacher. We ask that all parents and families stand along the path of the parade to clap for all our students. The parade will end by 8:30 a.m. at the latest.
The following are guidelines are for you to consider as you prepare your costume.
✓ No costume face mask of any kind (only face mask as required by our district)
✓ No face paint
✓ Nothing covering the face
✓ No Blood ✓ No Guts
✓ No Weapons
✓ No Violent material
✓ No props- just the costume
All costumes must adhere to the TUSD dress policies. Costumes that do not meet the requirements will be unable to participate in the parade if their costume cannot be corrected prior to the parade they can participate in our alternative parade activity to be held in the library. Alternative Halloween Parade activity: We recognize that not all students celebrate/recognize Halloween, so we must provide an alternative for these students. A staff member will be in the library to facilitate an alternative activity with the students.
Thank you, Mrs. Thomas, Principal

Day of Awesomeness!
PTO updates!
Good day Roadrunner families!
We had such a blast at Day of Awesomeness! It was a great way to wrap up our fundraiser. Thank you to our volunteers for helping out that day. We had a huge response from parents wanting to help out. We will have other events coming up that we will need volunteers for also so keep your eye out for those dates.
It's been a great 1st quarter and PTO wants to share some information with you.
1. Attached to this email, are our minutes from the last meeting. Please look them over so you are aware of what we talk about. Maybe they will spark an idea for a future project for PTO!
2. Our next meeting is Monday, Oct 16 which is right after Fall Break at Robins Library at 5:30 pm.
3. Follow us on Instagram: robinspto23 and on GroupMe: Robins K8 PTO
4. SAVE THE DATE! Our Holiday Shop will be from Dec 11 - Dec 15. (Yes we will need volunteers for this one! More info later!) This is an event where students can do some holiday shopping for their families. It's a FUN way to learn about budgeting and money management.
5. Public Schools Tax Credit is a great way to direct your Arizona tax dollars to a school you designate. You can make contributions through the TUSD website. You may be able to get your money back at tax time! For more information, please visit Az Dept of Education or consult your tax advisor.
****Please note that PTO has NO access to these funds. PTO raises money through fundraisers and special events.****
It's been a busy year so far and we appreciate EVERYONE'S support, advice, and feedback in PTO projects. Enjoy Fall Break!
Sincerely,
Robins K8 PTO.

Hello, Scholars!
September was an amazing month, and October will be even better. We are getting some new books all throughout this month. Many are based off of books you all have asked for that we currently have. Amongst these new titles are “Sunny Side Up” series, some new “Babysitter’s Club” books, and the “Who Would Win” series!
Also, we are still celebrating Hispanic Heritage month, and I’ve got some cool pieces I’ve borrowed from EMC. We even have a Diego Rivera print among other Hispanic artists! We also have a Vejigante mask, which derives from a Spanish folklore. The masks are still worn at Carnival festivals today and are usually paired with flowing costumes. Also, there are clothing items from Guatemala, and Chile! There are books displayed all over the library about important, influential Hispanic people who have helped shape the world into what we see now, so, next time you’re in the library, check all these things out!
