IVC Freshmen Advantage Program
The deadline for IVC’s Freshmen Advantage Program to receive priority registration on May 9 is now over. Seniors may still complete all steps including the application process and matriculation steps (orientation, advisement, and first semester plan) online in their IVC MySite portal or make an appointment at IVC’s Counseling Center. For questions, please contact Beckman’s IVC Senior Matriculation Specialist Rick Chan at rchan@ivc.edu.
To qualify for IVC’s Promise Program which include 2 years of free tuition, students must also complete a financial aid application (FAFSA or CA Dream Act Application) in addition to completing the steps above. Please be sure that IVC is listed as a college on the financial aid application. For help with completing a financial aid application for IVC, please contact IVC’s Financial Aid Office. The Promise Program is first come, first served and is not based on household income.
Students are also encouraged to apply for IVC’s Honors Program—it is not too late!
Students should check their IVC e-mail and IVC MySite portal consistently for information about Promise Program eligibility and registration dates.
An IVC Counselor will be available at Beckman in the Career Center on a drop-in basis on Wednesday May 25 from 8:30-9:30 for student questions.
Santiago Canyon College Extended Early Welcome
For seniors who could not attend Early Welcome (Registration) or are just now applying to Santiago Canyon College, there is one more matriculation process during the month of May.
Every Saturday in May (May 6, 13, 20, 27), we will be having “Extended Early Welcome” virtual appointments. During “Extended Early Welcome”, a Santiago Canyon College Counselor will meet with your student for a 30-minute one-on-one virtual appointment. Our counseling team will help your students select and register for their Fall 2023 classes during this appointment. Please see the flyer HERE.
Our office will contact your students who missed Early Welcome (Registration) and all new SCC applicants to schedule their virtual appointments. If you have seniors interested in SCC, please have them email or call our office so we can schedule their Saturday appointment, at outreach@sccollege.edu or (714) 628-4808.
Work Permits:
Students should check their work permit for the expiration date with their employer. Most work permits that were NOT issued recently have an expiration date in May and will need to be renewed prior to the end of the school year if the student plans on working at the same location over the summer. Students are encouraged to renew their work permit now for summer employment by submitting another work permit application. For information about work permits including summer work permits, please read the Work Permits link on the BHS website or contact Ms. McDonald in the Career Center at mmcdonald@tustin.k12.ca.us. Please allow 1-2 days for processing work permits.

Junior Junction
- All 11th Grade students participated in the BCAP Lesson. This lesson provided students an overview of the “big picture” of the BCAP process as well as researching and preparing for the post-secondary option of their choice. All juniors now have access to their counselor's BCAP Google Classroom with detailed information about postsecondary planning. This lesson was then followed up by a brief CCR to review and highlight the Postsecondary Plan Manager and give students time to work on their plan.
- Based on data from our pre/post survey, the 11th grade students are feeling more comfortable with where/how to find information about their post-secondary pathway of choice and how to access/submit the BCAP documents to their counselor and/or teacher if they need a letter of recommendation.
- We encourage rising seniors to finalize their postsecondary plans and college lists over the summer and begin the application and essay processes. This will hopefully reduce some of the stress that occurs with seniors handling their classes along with this process in the fall.

- Visiting colleges in the summer can be highly advantageous for high school students exploring their future educational options. With campuses generally less crowded, students can gain valuable insights and experiences that can shape their college decisions. Here are some key benefits of summer visits and factors to consider during the process. Firstly, visiting colleges in the summer allows students to display genuine interest in a prospective institution. Colleges often consider demonstrated interest as a factor in the admissions process. By visiting during the summer, students can engage in meaningful conversations with admissions officers, attend information sessions, and meet with faculty or current students. These interactions show their enthusiasm and commitment, which can positively influence their application. Additionally, summer visits provide an opportunity to explore campuses without the distractions of the academic year. With fewer students present, high schoolers can gain a clearer understanding of the physical environment, facilities, and amenities. They can take their time to navigate the campus, visit residence halls, libraries, and recreational areas, and envision themselves as part of the college community. This firsthand experience can help students evaluate the campus culture and determine if it aligns with their preferences and goals. Moreover, summer visits enable students to research specific academic programs or departments of interest. They can arrange meetings with professors, attend lectures, or sit in on summer classes. This engagement allows them to assess the teaching style, curriculum, and resources available in their desired field. Students can also explore internship or research opportunities, study abroad programs, and extracurricular activities relevant to their academic pursuits. When planning summer college visits, it's crucial for students to consider factors like location, campus size, academic reputation, financial aid options, and student support services. They should also think about the overall feel of the campus, the surrounding community, and the potential for personal growth and engagement. In conclusion, summer college visits provide high school students with the chance to display their interest and gather vital information about prospective colleges. By taking advantage of the quieter campus environment, students can make informed decisions about their higher education options, leading to a successful and fulfilling college experience.
