Haymarket Happenings
June 2022
Dear Haymarket Elementary Families,
As I am sure with many of you, there were so many emotions that went through us as individuals as well as us as professional educators after the events in Texas last week. Please rest assured that safety continues to be our #1 priority because if students don't feel safe, they won't learn...if you as parents don't feel as though your children are safe, you won't send them. Myself, Mrs. Mills and Mrs. Shore reminded our staff of the importance of being diligent with following the measures we have in place. Since last Tuesday I have put Security Walks on my daily calendar...most days doing them 2-3 times per day. I am checking parking lots, woods line, exterior doors, interiors doors, signage, etc. We have made a couple changes given we have an additional person in the vestibule helping with signing people in. I take this VERY seriously...at my previous school when I was Principal we had to tighten some procedures up because they weren't like I wanted them to be. I am glad we did that because we went through a situation where we had to be in lockdown for about 6 hours because of a very real scare. We were commended by local and federal law enforcement for the efforts of the teachers and staff. I brought that lens here with me to Haymarket ES because no one should have to go through that. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I can't give all the details of our procedures, but I can tell you I personally do these checks and am diligent about perfection.
Sincerely,
Mr. Baldwin

Summer Laptop Information
As the 2021-2022 year comes to a close, we need to ensure a couple things when it comes to technology devices. We have been lucky at HMES and PWCS as a whole to have all students have a device assigned to them for continued learning! I would like to thank all those at Central Office for their hard work and dedication to making this happen for our students this year.
Please read the following carefully:
All devices will stop going home on a nightly basis on Monday, June 6th so we can inventory them leading up to the last day of school.
· If your child is NOT attending summer school and you want to REQUEST that your child’s device comes home with them over the summer for EDUCATIONAL purposes and you don’t have one at home they can use, please use the link below to complete a request.
· ALL 5th grade laptops are due back to HMES on Wednesday, August 10th. They will be assigned a new device at their middle school.
· All RISING K-4th grade students who have a laptop this summer can bring them back on the first day of school in August or you may drop them off at any time during the summer in the front office if you aren’t using it.
· Laptops continue to be restricted to PWCS security policies.
If your child is NOT in summer school and you want your child to bring their laptop home for EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES, please complete the request below by clicking on the link. This survey will close on Friday, June 10th at 11:00pm.

PALS Score Reports
Students in Grades K-2 and some in Grade 3 are required to take the PALS assessment a couple times year year. The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) provides a comprehensive assessment of young children's knowledge of the important literacy fundamentals that are predictive of future reading success. Students in grades K-2 and those students who received PALS intervention will receive a score report from their teacher during the last week of school. For information on how to read the reports, please see the videos below that Ms. Ebeck, our Reading Specialist, put together for parents!
SOL Scores in ParentVUE
The main SOL testing window has closed, but we still have retakes that will be occurring over the next week and a half. Once all scores have been inputted into ParentVUE they will be available to parents. This will most likely occur in mid-June around the last day of school. If you have questions about your child's test, please contact his or her teacher.
Teacher Placement Input
We like to hear from you as parents about placement considers for next year. Please click on the link below to provide your input. Please do not include teacher names on requests unless you had experience with that teacher with a previous child of yours. This form will close on June 17th.
