A Message from Superintendent Rachel Kinder, Ed.S
This week you will notice both the Superintendent Message and the “This Week in Valley View” newsletter are being shared in a new format to provide an easier and more accessible experience for our VVSD Community. Simply click “Translate” above to select your preferred language, or click “Accessibility” to increase font size and color. The Superintendent Message is converting into a space of Elevating Voices and sharing perspectives and will be shared monthly.
The best part of my job is spending time with our learners, families, and staff in our schools and at special events. It is such a privilege to see accomplishments, big and small, and witness the growth that is happening daily. Recently, I was honored to be one of the guest readers at Hermansen and Pioneer Elementary School STLR Program family reading night. 5th Grader Rodrigo demonstrated his skills as an Effective Communicator as a special guest reader and he did an amazing job while his teachers and family proudly listened to him share his story.
I am proud to share Every Learner Spotlights and Staff Spotlights in elevating the voices of VVSD. Additionally, important reminders and a link to our weekly newsletter “This Week in Valley View” are included. Please see the important reminders below to share your voice on the 5 Essentials Survey and help us to spread the word about Kindergarten Enrollment and Bus Driver recruitment!
Rachel Kinder, Superintendent
Valley View School District 365U
Every Learner Spotlights
Every week, we spotlight learners from our schools on our websites and social media. This is one of my favorite features, as it allows our community to see the individual faces and personalities of our students. It also shows how students are connecting their school experience to the Portrait of a Learner competencies.
(from left to right) Jeremiah Gant, 3rd grade student at Oak View Elementary School, knows that if he doesn't understand something in class, he can always go to his teacher and ask. Jacaiyha Pitts, 5th grade student at R.C. Hill Elementary School, is always willing to try new things and have empathy to be a good friend to others. Hannah Jones, senior at Bolingbrook High School, connects with being an adaptive learner in her Social Justice class, which helps her see the world through a bigger lens.
VVSD Staff Spotlight
Licensed Practical Nurse May Owusu-Ansah serves special needs students at Jane Addams Middle School. Among May’s many duties are helping students with feeding tubes receive their nourishment and delivering insulin to students with diabetes. May and her skill set allows Jane Addams students to attend school with minimal interruptions caused by medical conditions.
Three Things to Know
Kindergarten Enrollment opens February 23
VVSD will open Kindergarten registration for the Class of 2037 on Fri. Feb. 23 through the online enrollment process. To be eligible to register, a student must be five years old on or before Sept 1, 2024, and the family must live with VVSD boundaries. Families of current VVSD students will be able to register via their Infinite Campus Parent Portal account, while families new to the District will be able to register online. Click here for more details about the enrollment process.
Elevate your Voice with 5Essentials
VVSD invites parents and guardians of our students to take part in an on-line survey about your child’s school called the Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This important survey will provide valuable information about our learning community and will help guide our ongoing improvement efforts. Here is the link to the survey: www.vvsd.org/5essentials Survey is open through Friday, March 29.
VVSD Hiring Bus Drivers-Apply Now!
We want to thank the VVSD community for your flexibility as we continue to work through a shortage of bus drivers in our Transportation Department. Certainly, this situation is not optimal and we recognize the challenge this creates for our VVSD families. The Team in the Transportation Department continues to put in incredible effort to cover shortages, yet, we have recently run into challenges leading to cancellations. We are working closely with our Transportation Team on multiple strategies to alleviate the impact on students and families. Please help us spread the word that we need drivers! If you would like to apply or know someone who would be interested, all our job openings are posted at www.vvsd.org/jobs
