The Pawsome Print
October 13, 2023
Dear Pawsome Families,
Over the last few weeks, Officer Jess and Officer Rico have visited classrooms, lunch and recess times. Here is Officer Jess and Officer Rico with some first graders and their Thank You sign after a classroom visit.
Throughout November, families will be meeting with teachers during conferences. Please make sure you have signed up for a teacher conference as this is an important opportunity to meet with your child's teacher to learn about your child's learning.

Food Pantry Trip
Our fourth grade team visited the Food Pantry this week. This was a great opportunity for our fourth graders to see how the Food Pantry works and to learn more about the importance of our collection each month. A big shout out to Heather Larson who helped us to make this trip happen!
Coming To School Every Day Is Important
A quick note about the importance of getting your child(ren) to school.
Research shows that low attendance in school causes many negative academic and social outcomes for K-12 students. Common sense and research suggest that being in school consistently is important to ensuring our children gain a strong foundation for subsequent learning. Research shows that children, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, or ethnicity, lose out when they are chronically absent (that is, they miss nearly a month of school or more over the course of a year).* Chronic absence can leave third graders unable to read proficiently, sixth graders struggling with coursework and high school students off track for graduation.*
Chronic absence = missing 10 percent or more of school days due to an absence for any reason (excused or unexcused).
Attending school regularly is essential to students gaining the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to thrive. Chronic absence, no matter its cause, has real-life consequences for students, families, and society as a whole.
A few facts:
Research shows that missing 10 percent of the school year, or about 18 days in most school districts, negatively affects a student’s academic performance. That’s just two days a month and that’s known as chronic absence. *
Children chronically absent in kindergarten show lower levels of achievement in math, reading and general knowledge during first grade.*
Starting in Kindergarten, missing 10 percent of school - or just two days every month - can make it harder for children to learn to read and do math.*
By 6th grade, chronic absence becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school. *
When students improve their attendance rates, they improve their academic prospects and chances of graduating.*
Getting to school on-time is also incredibly important. The first part of our school day is when we have classroom morning meeting time to build connections and community.
IF YOUR CHILD IS STRUGGLING WITH GETTING TO SCHOOL PLEASE REACH OUT. WE WILL WORK WITH YOU AND YOUR CHILD TO COME UP WITH A PLAN.
SHOWING UP EVERY DAY IS IMPORTANT!
* A growing body of research has shown the prevalence of chronic absence, its critical role in student achievement, and how it can be addressed. Access a research summary here:

Bus Procedures and Policy Reminders
We have received many requests for students to take different buses for play-dates and after school activities. I wanted to share some of the policy from the family handbook that may help clarify for families. Here is the link to the complete policy.
Please reach out to transportation with any questions.
- Only students with a current bus pass are eligible to ride the bus. Students without a bus pass may not ride the bus.
- Students must use the bus to which they are assigned. Transportation to social events, daycare, or religious classes is not permitted.
- In order to provide safety and security to our Students, different or multiple stops and/or multiple buses assigned are not allowed and students must be assigned one bus stop for morning and afternoon bus transportation pick-up and drop-off.
Reporting Absences and Dismissing Your Child Early
To report your child's absence or dismissal change:
Please use this google form, email the office at loring_office@sudbury.k12.ma.us
or call, 978-579-0870 and press 1
Any dismissal changes must be in place before 1:00 pm and 10:30 am on early release days.
An email to the teacher is always welcome but it should not be the primary way to change your child's dismissal. A morning reminder to your child about their dismissal change is always helpful.
If your child is not at school and we have not received a form, call or email, we will contact you (and your emergency contacts). Please know that safety is our top priority.
Recess Volunteers
We have had a great turn out for lunch/recess volunteers! Thanks to everyone that has signed up. Here is the link if you need it. We hope to see you there!

The Loring Pledge is said every morning during announcements. Loring students embody our pledge and we hope this stays with them not only when they are at school but home as well.
