Message from Superintendent Woods:
May signals the end of the school year, but we have some very serious learning days ahead for our students before school wraps up on the 20th for seniors and the 26th for everyone else. A lot happens in this final month as teachers prepare students for the summer, reinforcing fundamentals that provide the foundation for a strong knowledge base.
Of course, there’s graduation. It’s a big final step for students in our K-12 education program. It’s a culmination of everything students have learned, from simple addition to algebra. There’s a lot of line for some students, make or break scholarships, grades and job opportunities. It’s when the rubber hits the road. It’s when life gets real. Congratulations to our graduating Huskies and Cougars!
Then we start again. In fact, we’ve already begun preparations for the new school year. Before we get too far, I want to personally thank parents and the community for your support during the past year. Teachers and support staff deserve a huge note of appreciation for their dedication. It truly takes a commitment at every level to provide a safe and productive learning environment.

Ribbon cutting for the state-of-the-art cardio/strength center will be held in the fall
Emmett Middle School is one of three Idaho schools to receive a state-of-the-art $100,000 DON’T QUIT! Fitness Center featuring a circuit training center that includes stationary multi-exercise equipment for strength and cardio fitness.
The award includes customized design, delivery and installation of the equipment within the school’s existing building structure. Once the fitness center is installed at the Emmett Middle School, a ribbon cutting ceremony will be held this fall.
Physical Education Teacher Dana Williams said the application was a group effort with help from fellow staff members Jeremiah Wright, Denise Sherman and Shannon Anderson. She asked students Bailey McMillan, Ellie Gurney, Ty McConnell, Lincoln Thayn and Daxtyn Williams to help make a video for the grant.
“We are so excited to have access to more fitness opportunities. Our middle school physical education department has a variety of physical education opportunities with regular PE, weight training, walk fit, adaptive PE and adaptive PE mentoring,” Williams said. “This fitness center just enhances the opportunities as now we can add fitness classes and give PE classes access to fitness equipment that are regularly used by the weight training classes. This is a great thing for EMS.”
“I’m excited that so many elementary and middle schools took the opportunity to apply for this gift from the National Foundation for Governors’ Fitness Councils,” Gov. Brad Little said. “There were so many entries that really highlighted how our state, educators and students prioritize fitness. Congratulations to the three winning schools and everyone who applied.”
“We had a tremendous response from schools throughout the great state of Idaho,” said fitness icon Jake (Body by Jake) Steinfeld, NFGFC chairman. “None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of Gov. Brad Little and Superintendent of Public Instruction Sherri Ybarra, who helped make this campaign a huge success by putting the health and well-being of children first.”
“These three schools really embodied our mission of building a nation of the fittest, healthiest kids in the world,” Steinfeld said. “Congratulations to all. We look forward to visiting these schools during our ribbon-cutting ceremonies for the fitness centers this fall!”
Special honor for Villanueva and Mullins
Thank you to Huskie Alum Scott McGann for taking the initiative to honor two men who had lasting impacts on Emmett High School and the community.
Last week, the Board of Trustees approved the request to name the High School football field after Tony Villanueva and the High School gym after Ray Mullins.
The Emmett School District has opened registration for the 2022-2023 school year preschool program. The deadline to submit applications is June 30.
On or about July 1, 36 students – 18 for the morning session and 18 for the afternoon session will be selected in a lottery drawing and parents will be notified after July 4th.
Little Huskies Preschool enrollment packets can be picked up at the District Office, 119 N. Wardwell Ave., or you may email info@isd221.net.
Preschool Program Director Shannon Anderson asks parents to register, only if their child meets at least one of the following situations:
The student is currently on the waiting list for Head Start.
The student did not qualify for Emmett School District developmental preschool services.
The student qualifies for services under the McKinney-Vento Act (see paperwork included in registration packet for details.)
The student is currently on the waiting list for another preschool, or the student is not enrolled elsewhere.
The student lives in the household of an immediate family member who is an employee of Emmett School District.

Free & Reduced Meal Applications due May 26
Since the start of the pandemic, we have been proud to serve all students breakfast and lunch at no cost regardless of the family income. Free meals will end prior to the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
The District will need to charge for meals, starting August 22.
So, we are asking families to submit a 2021-2022 SY Free & Reduced Meal Application before May 26th, and a 2022-2023 application again in August, to ensure your student has a 30-day carryover status into the new school year. Doing it twice eliminates gaps between school years.
Applications are completely confidential and will not be shared.

Secondary Summer School: Registration/first day of will be held June 3 at Black Canyon
Emmett Summer School begins June 3rd! Registration will be held along with an orientation on the same day at Black Canyon Junior Senior High School!
Emmett School District’s Summer School at Black Canyon for middle and high school students begins Friday, June 3rd, according to Summer School Principal Stu Peterson. Summer School ends Friday, July 8th, or earlier if required course work is done.
Middle School Registration: Friday, June 3rd, 7:30-11:30
High School Registration: Friday, June 3rd, 12:00-4:30
