From Mr. Clemente
Dear Winter Park Band families,
Congratulations to all on a great start to the 2022 - 2023 school year! I cannot say enough about what a great job our students did these past two weeks at Band Camp. Seeing the students' excitement about learning, how they help each other overcome obstacles, and their effort to support the whole Band is pretty amazing to watch in real time and is foundational to our culture. A special kudos to this year's Student Leadership team and all the work they put in behind the scenes. Exciting times are ahead!
An enormous thank you our Band Booster Board members for their work leading up to and during camp. Dana Adkinson for her leadership, coordination, and photography skills - Ellen DeLoach and her team of Band Camp Meals serving volunteers for making sure our students were fed, hydrated, and feeling good throughout camp - Robyn Fodor for coordinating volunteers - Amanda Schaefer and her uniform team for fitting our students for both marching band and concert uniforms before and during camp - and all other board members.
Speaking of photography, we are constantly posting on social media so you can keep up with the Band program in real time. Follow, like, and share the Band!

This week, students will be picking up their schedules on both campuses during "Welcome Back Cats." As a reminder, there is a difference in what shows as the period of the day you have band class and the official state of Florida course code you are enrolled in. For example, Concert Band takes place 7th period. Students enrolled in Concert Band will see the course code "Band 2" on their schedules for 7th period. So long as the period of the day your band, jazz, or color guard class meets is correct you will be all set. In case you have a question concerning your schedule, or if you believe there is an error, please email both myself and Mr. Smith and we will help you as soon as we can.
Our biggest fundraiser of the year is happening now! Please see below in Julie Capps' Program Ads and Sponsorships section of the newsletter for more details. This fundraiser is easy, and students get 60% of any ad space they sell back into their account as credit. Parents: one easy way to use this fundraiser could benefit you - take out a "shoutout" ad for your student and get 60% of that purchase directly back to you in the form of credit! Extended family can also become a Sponsor in the name of your student and 100% of that money goes to them as credit. If you have questions, please contact Julie via email.
Fair Share Payment 1 came due this past Wednesday, 7/27 - the second Wednesday of Band Camp. If you missed this deadline, please complete the payment as soon as you are able. Families have the option to either pay the remainder of the Fair Share for the entire school year ($225) or make the first payment ($100) of the payment plan as listed on the 2022-2023 Band Financial Obligations Form everyone completed for registration. The digital "flip" from last year's grade to this year's grade has now happened at the county level, so all new Band parents should be able to see Band items on SchoolPay when they log into their account. Each item begins with "BAND" for easy finding.
See everyone on at rehearsal on Tuesday evening!
Mr. Clemente

From the Band Booster President, Mrs. Dana Adkinson
Way to go, Band! Hope everyone enjoyed the Preview Show Friday evening! I am always so impressed by the progress that these directors make with these kids in just two weeks .. from a quarter of the group having never marched before to almost one entire movement of a halftime show amazes me every. single.time! The hard work and coordination required by the directors, the student leaders and parent volunteers to pull off a successful two week endeavor like this is significant. The band kids all worked so hard these past two weeks .. and it showed Friday evening .. they looked and sounded great! They made some new friends and learned things about themselves .. Kudos to you all!
A special thanks to all our parent volunteers who helped fit uniforms and serve meals these weeks. And especially to our board members, Ellen Deloach, Amanda Schaefer and Robyn Fodor for organizing the food purchase, delivery and serving and for fitting nearly 140 kids for both marching and concert uniforms. These are two huge jobs without which we'd be lost! Robyn, thank you for organizing our volunteer sign ups for these tasks as well .. it all starts with volunteers.
Hope Friday's Booster meeting was informative without being too overwhelming. Thank you to so many parents for attending .. so exciting to see such a great turnout and to see the enthusiasm for our band program! Please remember to reach out to any of the board members (http://www.winterparkhsband.com/band-boosters.html) or directors with any questions or concerns .. no matter how small you think they may be! Once we all get a game or two under our belts, it will all make much more sense and you'll be hooked!
Now that Band Camp is officially over, we move onto twice weekly rehearsals and Marching (sometimes known as "football") Season. Parents, please sign up or renew your existing volunteer information on the Additions website after August 1: https://www.ocps.net/cms/One.aspx?portalId=54703&pageId=89698
And then, sign up to help with the Uniform Squad and to chaperone a football game or two. We've already got a bunch of parents signed up in these Sign Up Genius slots .. can't wait to get them all filled up! Thank you so much, parents, for signing up .. don't worry, once you "report for duty," we will show you everything you need to know!
In case you need more inspiration to sign up for the Uniform Squad , our amazing Uniform Chair, Amanda Schaefer, writes this:
Help get the Sound of the Wildcats ready for football games .. Helping with uniforms is a great way to meet band parents and get answers to many questions about how Band works.
Tuesdays August 2, 9, 16, 23 - from 6pm til 7:30pm we will be doing uniform prep during marching practice, in the uniform room. This will include matching up shakos and ponchos with uniforms into cubbies, fittings for new students, ironing parties, and adding that all-important bling! Sign up here for this: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-uniform
For Friday August 26th and for all home and away football games, parades and marching band events, we will need 2-4 people to help monitor the uniform room and put plumes on the shakos just before the band plays. Benefits of this position includes:
- watching the transformation of ~140 awkward and amazing teens into a band
- FREE bus ride to/from and admission to football games
- stylish luggage to wheel around the stadium, like a boss
- walking and squatting workout for the day
- field side view of the band performance
- amazing chats with students and chaperones
- being part of the stands music and dancing experience
To sign up for the Uniform Detail for football games, sign up here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-football
If you are able and interested in any of the above or have any questions about these volunteer opportunities, please reach out to Amanda Schaefer (schaefer.momma@gmail.com).
We'll still need to fill 14 chaperone slots for each football game .. 2 uniform chaperones and 12 others .. so please check your availability and join us for some Friday Night Lights! We've got many slots still available here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0a4fadab22aa8-football
Sell your ads for the printed concert program! These ad sales are a GREAT way to raise funds for your student's band account and a great outreach to our community. Program ads info is here (about a 1/3 down the page): http://www.winterparkhsband.com/band-boosters.html Ad sales are due by September 9th .. still a little more than a month left to sell.
Remember to order your WP Band spirit wear by Friday, August 12. If you ordered extra show shirts, those will be in and sent home with your student shortly. And keep your eyes out for another SHOW SHIRT order in another couple of weeks.
Enjoy your last official week of summer, Band! Looking forward to a great year .. we're off to a great start!
Dana Adkinson

Program Ads and Sponsorships Fundraiser - Raise Money Now to Offset your Fair Share Payments and NYC Trip Costs!
Hello WPHS Band Families!
The season for selling ads in the Winter Park High Band program is well underway. If you are not familiar with this program, the Winter Park Band Concert Program features pictures of the Band as well as information about the band’s instructor and members. The program is distributed free at all concerts throughout the school year and includes local business ads, student dedications and sponsorships purchased by local businesses and families.
With the band scheduled to take a group trip to New York City in June 2023, it is important you understand how purchasing or selling an ad in the band program can help you save money on that trip. Any ad sold by your student can help defray your financial obligations to Band, including payment for the NYC trip. Once payment for the ad is received, the student’s Band account will be credited with 60% of the ad revenue that he/she sells, depending on the Band’s printing cost.
Here's how selling just one ad can benefit you:
- Sell a full-page ad ($325) to your kid’s orthodontist? You’ll get an estimated $195 credit on your account that can then be used toward the cost of the NYC trip.
- Celebrate your Band Student with a ½ page student dedication? While the ad will cost you $175, you will then get a credit back of roughly $105 that can go back towards your payments to band. This is especially popular with Senior families, but the family of any student can put a shoutout into the program.
The three types of advertising available are:
- Business Ad: Connect your local business or a business you frequent with audiences attended WPHS band performances throughout the school year.
- Student Dedication: Celebrate your student’s participation in the WPHS band program with a ¼, ½ or full-page ad that can include multiple pictures.
- Sponsorship: Become a “Friend of Winter Park Band” with a monetary donation and recognition on the sponsorship list. This is a great option for family and friends who ask how they can support your student in band.
The deadline for selling or purchasing an ad is quickly approaching. So that the program can be printed in time for the first home concert, all ads must be purchased or sold by Friday, September 9, 2022. Forms for the ad program can be accessed on the WPHS Band website by clicking About>Band Boosters. All files are located under the section Program Ads and Sponsors 2022.
Have additional questions? Contact Julie Capps, Program Ads & Sponsors Coordinator at 704- 258-3306 or juliedcapps@aol.com.

Pride of the Wildcats - Winter Park Band Fleet Vehicle Support and Improvement
We are very proud of our Operations side of the Winter Park Band. We have a dedicated group of parents that take the Winter Park Band & Color Guard to all their events. However, without the use of the large tractor trailer that transports our equipment to and from each marching band event and the small trailer for color guard the task would be next to impossible.
Through the years, the operations group has made many changes to the trailers to improve the functionality for the Winter Park Band. Historically, all of the monies have been raised through private contributions of a select groups of parents and through the Alumni Foundation. Because of this the need of a full fundraiser event to deflect the cost of the band operations was never really until now.
In effort to maintain our large trailer’s top-notch condition, we are planning to do some MAJOR repairs and improvements to the trailer that is now in its 15th year of service for WPHS band. Additionally, we need to either replace (preferable) the small trailer or make it road worthy again.
Some of the items on our list of improvements are costly, including:
- Repairing some minor damage to larger trailer
- Repainting the lower section of the large trailer
- Rewrapping the upper section of the large trailer
- Replace wheel bearings on front axle
- Moving the back stairway to the back of the trailer
- Replacing or repairing the small trailer
- And other improvements to keep our kids and volunteers safe.
Since we are re-wrapping the large trailer, we will be selling sponsor spots on the larger trailer to defray the cost. There are 10 spots that are available for $1,000 each and the entire front of the trailer for $5,000. These opportunities are a great way to support the Winter Park Band and they are also tax deductible.
Please contact Keith Gavin at kgavin@sscands.com for further information on donations or to provide the goods or services to the improvements that are so desperately needed.
