NTZB Parent Bulletin

Hello New Tech Families,

The past two weeks have been filled with learning and growing for our students and staff. This is the time of year when each grade level has been focusing on testing and the future! Our Sophomore students took the College of Lake County placement test which will qualify them for our dual credit program. All Junior students took a practice SAT on February 9, in preparation for the real test coming in April. Seniors are getting very excited as we roll out end of the year event planning, including prom and graduation. Students are visiting our counselor making final school choices and getting prepared to formally end their high school career! Our teachers are engaged in curriculum writing projects and professional development to help prepare for the various changes coming to New Tech in the fall.

This week our Black History activities have continued, including educational videos and a trip to the ZB Performing Arts Center last Friday for 10th and 11th grade students to watch the play Court Martial at Fort Devens--the true story behind one African American woman’s fight for equality. We will finish the month with a virtual scavenger hunt and a themed spirit week. Hard to believe the next NTZB Parent Bulletin will be March 4, 2022! As always, I look forward to creating more great days for our students and staff!

New Tech's Black Student Union (BSU) has kept the momentum going strong this month through weekly videos, announcements, activities, and displays throughout the school.

Next week, as Black History Month concludes, there will be daily activities including a week-long opportunity to complete the "Who Am I?" virtual scavenger hunt. Students will be tested on their knowledge of the influential people they were introduced to throughout the month.

Mrs. Walker-Hakeem, District 126's Family Engagement Specialist, shared her hat collection and provided QR codes with links to articles discussing the history of wearing hats to Sunday services.

The military has played a large part in the formation and continuation of Black Greek Letter Organizations chants and steps. Generally performed in groups, stepping helps maintain the social cohesiveness of the black fraternal community. The practice’s origins are also African and can boast roots in the call-and-response tradition as well as in games played by Congo children and in the gum-boot dancers of South African mines. The Black Greek Letter Organizations can trace stepping back to the military influence of the early 1900s. Ex-soldiers attending college would incorporate marches and drills into their fraternity behaviors. In 1996 a group of Omega Fraternity men were interviewed regarding the early influence of the military on stepping. They stated, “A lot of the brothers who helped form this organization were members of the military ROTC programs back in college. If you ever see a line of marching down pledges, they march like a military line that you might see when marines do their drills. It’s the same with a pledge line or brothers when we step.”

Our district athletes have had many great moments this past season and we look forward to celebrating their achievements. We have changed the format of these awards programs to make them more exciting so we invite you to come out and help us close out the winter season.

High Honor Roll recognition is awarded for weighted grade point averages of 3.75 and above.

Honor Roll recognition is awarded for weighted grade point averages of 3.50 to 3.74.

Our local food pantries and mobile markets provide free groceries and food to those in need. Pantries offer perishable and non-perishable foods that you can choose from based on your dietary needs. If you have questions about the model of distribution your pantry is offering, or specific dietary needs or restrictions, a pantry would be happy to speak with you – just call ahead of time!

A part of District 126, NT@ZB is a companion campus to the larger central campus located across town. NT@ZB emphasizes 21st century learning skills in addition to its college preparatory curriculum taught in a project based learning format. Qualifying students have access to tuition-free dual credit college courses, the Lake County Tech Campus, and all students can participate in athletics as District 126 Zee-Bees!
