Principal's Message
Dear Chávez Families,
It is so wonderful to have the weather warming up and seeing the kids enjoying being outside more. Our Jogathon was a huge success this year, and we couldn't have asked for better weather. Thank you to all the volunteers who came to help and cheer on the kids.
Last week, we kicked off state testing season with a Champions of Your Learning assembly, featuring three UO scholar-athletes. These visiting "O'Heroes" spoke to 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders about the importance of perseverance and having a growth mindset. Students learned that state assessments are an important way for our state to know how we are doing and what we need as a school.
During the assembly, we also had a surprise visit from Sluggo from the Eugene Emeralds. Sluggo came to help us celebrate our March Madness Reading award. Chávez students logged the most reading of all the participants in 4J! Way to go!
Thank you all for your support with the many busy events happening in May. It is hard to believe this school year is wrapping up. Best to you and yours this spring.
Sincerely,
Ms. Pearson

P.E. Corner with Ms. Terri
We have been working on striking and volleying skills the past few weeks in P.E. classes. We have been striking a variety of objects using paddles, racquets, our hands and feet. We are also tracking our daily P.E. activity and keeping track of that on a Duck Dash activity tracker poster provided to us by the Eugene Marathon staff. They are encouraging all students to be active 10 days in a row so for us it is 10 P.E. days in a row. Each grade level has a Hayward Field poster in the gym where classes put a sticker with their class name. Classes work their way around the Hayward Field track as they complete their 10 days. The next unit/skill we will be working on is ball handling where students learn to bounce, catch, dribble and shoot a ball into a basketball hoop.
Please remind your student to wear appropriate shoes to school, especially since we are finally getting some nicer weather. We prefer closed toe shoes to protect their feet and shoes that stay securely on their feet. If you need assistance with providing shoes for your student, please let the school know.

Chávez Library News
Where will curiosity take us? Library Lessons in May will be a time to build upon research skills using our books and 4J databases like Britannica, PebbleGo, and National Geographic. Also students will have a chance to make their own books using Book Creator.
Book checkouts have been high this month, as there has been a lot of excitement around the new books that arrived. The students had a “book tasting” and made lists of books they wanted. Students wrote down several books and will use their skills in finding fiction and nonfiction books to find them. At Chavez, we use the give one and get one method. A student needs to return a book to check one out, so please keep encouraging your students to keep their books in their packs when they are not reading them.
This month, the library will be highlighting Asian-American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month with book displays and read alouds.
May is also a time to return books and pay for lost and damaged books, so that we are ready to start fresh in the new school year. As your librarian, I will be emailing and sending home notices of overdue and lost books your student may have. Please send me a note or contact me if you have questions or concerns. dyer_m@4j.lane.edu or (541) 790-5300 ext 5325.
Also, if you have financial hardship and need assistance please call the office at (541) 790-5300.
Counseling Corner with Ms. Shannon
Greetings, Families!
As we step into May, I wanted to highlight National Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to deepen our understanding of the importance of mental health to our overall wellbeing, continue working to understand the ways in which trauma and other factors can impact our mental health, to reduce stigma for those navigating mental health challenges, and to examine and heighten our efforts toward prevention and responsiveness. I'm linking a resource from Mental Health America on Promoting Children's Mental Health for your consideration. I'm also linking Relief Nursery's excellent Community Resource Guide, which includes both mental health-specific and many other resources, because we know that having our needs met is an important piece of the mental health puzzle. Also here's the district's page with links to mental health resources. If I can be of assistance in helping you or your family navigate any of this, please feel free to reach out to me.
In classroom Sources of Strength lessons, we have been learning about the brain, including how it responds to stressful and joyful experiences; highlighting and developing skills of interoception, and emotion identification; and strategies for regulation including healthy activities, connections with others and nature, and myriad other approaches which we tie into the Sources of Strength Wheel. Not surprisingly, students in the upper grades frequently bring up electronics and sometimes social media when discussing preferred ways to regulate. While I'm sure many of us can relate to the pull, even as adults with more developed brains, the research about the negative effects of social media on teens' mental health is clear and concerning. If you're interested in taking a closer look or maybe considering a reset for your family around media use, Common Sense Media offers some great resources and strategies.
Whether about mental health or or other student and family needs, remember that any and all families are free to reach out to me via email: sell_s@4j.lane.edu or by phone at 541-790-5383 (direct office line).
Wishing you well,
Ms. Shannon
Site Council News
Site Council met on April 26th. We discussed the task our school has to create a SCIP (School Continuous Improvement Plan) and received feedback from our Parent Representative on the plans we have to focus on specific student groups and attendance. We already had a lot of work put into our School Improvement Plan from last year so this new plan requested by the superintendent allows us to expand on that work.
