Notes from the President
July Meeting: Our Quilting Journeys
July Program
The July program, Our Quilting Journeys, will be presented by FWQG members Judi Janes and Grace Stroud. We will tell you how we got into quilting and show you the very first quilts we ever made. Then we will show some of our favorite quilts and tell you about our favorite designers, patterns, techniques, tools, etc. Learn how we’ve evolved (or not) as quilters in our twenty plus years as members of the Fort Worth Quilt Guild. We promise to be entertaining and maybe even funny.
August Program
Zoom meeting with last minute show details and election of officers
September Program
New officer installation and potluck!

NORTH TEXAS QUILT FESTIVAL 2023
NTQF 2023
It’s almost time for the show!
Important dates : mini turn in -- before July 21 , quilt turn in – August 13, show starts – August 17, show ends / quilt pickup – August 19.
Tickets will be on sale at the July meeting, $12 each. Please purchase a ticket or two (bring a friend). Remember, 100% of these ticket sales goes straight to OUR guild.
If you pre-ordered a T-shirt, please try to pick it up at the July meeting or contact Lynda McGee. There will also be T-shirts at the show.
Volunteers : We need lots of volunteers to run a successful show. I haven’t seen a lot of FWQG members signed up yet. Use signup genius for the ‘guild’ positions https://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080A4DAAA62FA0F94-north and for Expo positions use http://www.sewingexpo.com/AmbassadorApplication.aspx .
If you registered a quilt(s) in the show, it’s time to finish and/or prep. Look at quilt entry preparations
http://www.fwqg.org/uploads/1/2/7/7/127780965/div_categoryinstructions.pdf
If you need someone to drop off and/or pickup your entry, contact Lynda McGee or Molly Risewick as soon as possible to schedule an early drop.
Get those booth items to Ann Houpt.
Consider carpooling to the show. If you agree to drive 3 friends to the show, our guild will provide you with a free ticket. 4 people means only $2.50 each for parking and friends to keep you company on the drive!
There will be some new and interesting things at the show. Special quilt exhibits (they sound fascinating). A ‘treasure hunt’ with a small prize for completion. ‘Make Space’ area with interesting crafts to make while there. Something new, called Quilt Street, will be introduced at our show…may include a little party. More vendors than last year.
Check out the guild website fwqg.org for all the quilt show information and links.
Mini Quilt Auction
Please, bring your minis to the July Guild meeting, drop off at my house or arrange a pickup. We will be pre-setting the auction on July 22.
Also, the auction still needs volunteers to help bidders register, find minis that they interest them, understand the auction rules…
SUNSHINE & SHADOWS
Send Sunshine and Shadows to Anne Houpt : annhoupt@aol.com
HOSPITALITY
Hope everyone has a Happy and Safe 4th of July with family and friends.
Thank you to all that brought refreshments to the June guild meeting everyone enjoyed them. I’m sure you have a snack recipe that you saw on Facebook that you would like to try so make it and share.
Hope everyone is making things for the booth. We need everyone to get involved in this project. It only takes a few minutes to make several items for the booth so we can continue to have great programs.

BEES
Bee Report: FRAYED KNOTS
Members of the Frayed Knots bee celebrated Independence Day with two days of stitching, food & friendship.
Ann Houpt made a table runner top, worked on a hand-embroidered block and made progress on a top called Four-Patch Around the World.
Sarah Tutt worked on her summery, citrusy quilt top, pocket pouches for friends, and finished out her Texas mini quilt for the auction.
Deborah Warren worked on a vintage Christmas top and salvaging pieces from a first quilt made by her daughter.
Jonquele Jones finished an art quilt, a patriotic mini and prepped the sleeve for the large star quilt that will go to the show.
… an enjoyable and productive holiday party.
Tight Knots Bee
Start a Bee
One of the most fun parts of belonging to a Guild is getting to know other quilters. But, there aren’t many opportunities to actually get to SEW and learn from one another, except in a bee. Most of the guild bees have been around for many years and don’t have openings for many newcomers. If you want to get know more of your fellow members, start a new bee!
General Guidelines
- 7-9 members. Start with the people sitting near you at Guild or advertise in the bee section of the newsletter, or on the FB page.
- A place to meet: dining room table, living room, playroom, apartment clubhouse, nearby church… You may want to rotate hosting among those with enough space.
- Monthly meeting time for 1.5-4 hours. Some groups may also have periodic all-day project days or retreats.
- Some groups organize around a common interest: appliqué, modern, art, charity projects, while some are based on proximity.
- Start simply and see how the group’s dynamics play out through time. There are lots of activity ideas online.
BEV RAMSEY FUND
Bev Ramsey was a charter member of the guild, a past president, a teacher and a friend. We lost her way too early. The Bev Ramsey fund was set up to help those in need enjoy the things she loved very much, retreats and workshops.
Lovies
If you would like to make one (or 100) take two pieces of 14" square fabric - one cotton, and one flannel. Sew them right sides together, leaving a gap to turn. Turn, then topstitch around the entire piece.
Beverly Peterson collects them at Guild meetings to give to Cook Children's. Cook's is always very grateful for the gifts.
QUILTS OF VALOR
Another eight blocks were turned in at the June meeting. Thanks, and keep them coming. I’m putting a top together and hope to have it quilted and ready to bring to the July meeting. One of our new members has volunteered to bind it for us. We appreciate all our volunteers, whether you piece blocks, whole quilt tops or do the long arming. You rock!
We awarded a QOV on June 25th to a gentleman who was recuperating in a nursing home after a fall. Instead of waiting until a regular ceremony was scheduled, his daughter wanted to have his award done sooner. It really cheered him up to have family and former co-workers visit and attend his QOV presentation. Pictures have been posted on the Quilts of Valor Texas FB page.
If you would like to nominate a family member or friend who has been touched by war, please go to the QOVF.org website and fill out the form. We would love to award several at our November meeting.
Just a reminder: Recommended size for QOV’s 60”x80” (minimum:55”x65”; maximum: 72”x90”)
Thanks again for all of your hard work!!

June Meeting Minutes
Thayne Rooney called the meeting to order at 6:40pm, June 20, 2023
2023-2024 Board Members
Molly Risewick reminded us that we have several board positions open for next year. Thayne Rooney resigned her position, therefore the President’s position was open. Lynda McGee agreed to step in as President for 2023-2024. With Lynda moving positions that leaves President Elect (Communications) and 2 Vice President (Programs) open. At a minimum, we have to fill one program position. If you or anyone you know would like to step into any of these positions let Molly or any board member know. There have been several members stepping up to fill other positions and we are excited to have them volunteering for us. The roster needs to be filled by our July meeting with voting on the board at our August Meeting.
North Texas Quilt Festival
Lynda McGee reported T-shirts are here and Tickets $12 are available for sale. Our guild received 65 tickets. If we sell them all prior to the festival the guild will receive $780.00. If you wait to buy your ticket at the door, it’s $15 and we will receive a very small amount back to the guild.
Our website has the links up to sign up for the volunteer positions needed at the festival. The Expo itself and each guild has positions that need to be filled to run the festival. The link is also there to sign up for classes.
Jonquele Jones is in charge of the Mini Auction at the festival and has several volunteer positions open in her area - Sale positions, taking down and sorting. She also reminded us the last date for dropping off minis is July 18th.
Ann Houpt is in charge of our guild’s booth. She has a sign up sheet for booth volunteers for each day. Contact her with more questions or sign up at our July meeting. No Saturday sew day needed for the booth.
Thayne adjourned the meeting.
Show n tell.
Lots of tops, quilts and projects were shown.
Booth Brigade Program
Many stations were available to work on items.
Booth Tickets
A raffle was held for booth items turned in. The number of raffle chances was determined by the number of items donated by the member
The winners: Barbara Dumas, Sarah Tutt, Donna Webber, and Molly Risewick x 2. Bring your booth items in July for another chance to win.
Birthdays
We celebrated 7 member’s birthdays in June. Thanks Marilyn.
