COLLEGE 101
Applying to college is a big job. It can feel overwhelming. However, you can make the process much easier by breaking it down into small steps. Here's how.
- Narrow your list of colleges to between 5 and 10. This takes research! Google is your friend "Schools near me with nursing (or whatever you plan to study)." "Schools in Florida with Engineering degrees." Plan to visit as many of these colleges as possible.
- Create a college application binder/spiral that includes:
1. Admission requirements: GPA, Class Rank, SAT/ACT/TSI scores needed to get in.
2. Cost per year.
3. Application deadlines.
4. Scholarship opportunities.
5. Tests you’ll take and their fees, dates, and registration deadlines.
6. College application timeline and due dates.
7. Required financial aid application forms and their deadlines (aid applications may be due before college applications).
8. Other materials you’ll need (e.g., recommendations, transcripts)
- Take the SAT one more time: Many seniors retake the SAT in the fall as part of their college planning timeline. The additional coursework you completed since your last test could help you boost your performance. Plus, you'll already know what to expect on test day.
- Send your SAT scores to the colleges you’re applying to if your scores strengthen your application.
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®): To apply for most financial aid, you’ll need to add completing the FAFSA to your timeline for college planning. October 1 is the first day you can file the FAFSA.
- Ask your counselor or a teacher for recommendation letters. Give each teacher or counselor an outline of your academic record and your extracurricular activities. For each recommendation, provide your teacher or counselor with the URL link and any college forms required. Allow them at least 10 school days to complete the recommendations.
- Write first drafts of application essays, and ask teachers and others to read them before you submit them. If you’re applying for early decision, finish the essays for that application now.
- Complete at least 1 college application by Thanksgiving.
- Submit your transcripts to colleges using this link: https://lewisvilletx.scriborder.com/

Federal Pell Grants
The Federal Pell Grant program provides assistance to eligible undergraduate students who have not yet earned a bachelor’s or professional degree. Unlike loans, Pell Grants do not need to be repaid.
For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation onto which other aid may be added. The amount of the award is determined through the FAFSA needs analysis process and the enrollment status of the student.
Federal Subsidized Direct Loan
This program offers long-term, low-interest-rate loans to students with financial need. Students must be enrolled at least half-time to participate.
Money for the Federal Subsidized Direct Loan program is borrowed directly from the U.S. Department of Education. Interest does not accrue and repayment does not begin until the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time. To receive this loan, the student must sign a promissory note and complete loan entrance counseling and loan exit counseling.
Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan
This program offers long-term, low-interest rate loans that are not based on financial need. Money for the Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan is borrowed directly from the U.S. Department of Education.
Interest does accrue while the student is enrolled; however, repayment does not begin until the student ceases to be enrolled at least half-time. To receive this loan, the student must sign a promissory note and complete loan entrance counseling and loan exit counseling.
Scholarships
Scholarships are free money for college that you never have to pay back. There are thousands of sources for scholarships – let us help you find resources that work for you.
Federal Work-Study Program
The Federal Work-Study Program provides part-time employment opportunities on campus or at off-campus non-profit agencies. Financial need, prior work experience, individual skills, and academic majors may be considered when placing students in specific work-study positions.
Military
Both the federal government and nonprofit organizations offer money for college to veterans, future military personnel, active duty personnel, or those related to veterans or active duty personnel.
