West Word
An Update from Perkiomen Valley Middle School West
A Word From Mr. Creeden
We concluded Random Acts of Kindness Week this week. Kindness can bring people together, even people that are not getting along. Kindness is powerful! Sometimes it’s the smallest act that makes the biggest impact – something as simple as saying please or thank you can turn a day around and make life seem that much better. Random Acts of Kindness Week encourages you to get out there and be the light you want to see in the world. West participated in this wonderful initiative with a spirit week, Valentines treats for our school bus drivers courtesy of Operation H.E.L.P. and inspirational videos. I want to say a special THANK YOU to our wonderful West Home & School for organizing the week and providing prizes and treats for students throughout the week. Please see below for some pics and a kindness video students watched in homeroom this week to spread the kindness message.
A special thank you to the West community for your generous donations to our local Daily Bread Community Food Pantry. The Daily Bread Community Food Pantry is the fourth largest food pantry in Montgomery County, serving approximately 300 families or 1,200 individuals each month. The pantry serves a broad area in Montgomery County – from the northern reaches of Perkiomenville and Gilbertsville to the southern areas of Collegeville and Eagleville. It is overseen by the Community Action Development Commission (CADCOM), the leading anti-poverty agency in Montgomery County. Unlike many other food pantries, the Daily Bread Community Food Pantry attempts to provide a full week of emergency food for all those it serves. It aims to provide personal care products not covered by Food Stamps that hit hard at family food shopping budgets. To learn more about the Daily Bread Community Food Pantry go to https://dailybreadcommunityfoodpantry.org/.

What's Up @ West
Ursinus Mentoring Program
The Ursinus Mentoring Program pairs PV middle school students with student mentors from Ursinus College. Goals for the partnerships range from academic help, goal setting and advice on preparing for high school, college, and beyond, to simply staying connected during these challenging times....and to have some fun while doing so! During this session the students will be collaborating on a Community Appreciation Project - making and sending letters to different agencies and organizations to thank them for their service or to just brighten their day. Counseling secretary, Lori Tropea, proctors the program that began the this week and will run through the end of April. Sessions are held from 2:45 until 3:45 every Monday. All students are eligible with no cost to participate in the program. A huge thank you to Mrs. Tropea and our wonderful Ursinus mentors!
Pyramid Builders
The Great Pyramid of Giza is the largest of all the Egyptian pyramids and is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. It was built between 2580 and 2560 BC. with primitive technology, however the result was amazingly precise! Students in Mr. Glennon and Mrs. Mozi's sixth grade social studies classes were given the opportunity to discover just how challenging it is to build a precise pyramid. Using a paper template, scissors and tape, the young builders found careful cutting and folding were the key to a quality structure!
Communicating Through Design
Students in Mr. Hayes' eighth grade Technical Education classes began to explore the principles of graphic design this week. Graphic design is the process and art of combining text and graphics to communicate an effective message. The principles of graphic design include shape, mass, texture, color, balance, alignment, repetition, and contrast. Students took photographs using these principals that they will incorporate in an upcoming nature photography project.
