Board Briefs: December 12, 2019
Compiled by Board Secretary Ioanna Cossack
Three Directors Sworn In: The Board was honored to have Mayor Greg Wheeler at our meeting to swear in newly-elected directors Dr. Karen Bolton (position #1), Ms. Jonee Dubos (re-elected to position #3), and Mr. John Hurley (position #2). Director Hurley was appointed in August to fill in for a resignation and now has been elected by the community to continue. Dr. Bolton is brand new to the Board.
Outgoing Directors: Ms. Naomi Evans was honored for serving as Director, position #1, December 2015 through June 2019, working diligently for our community and our children. Mr. Dave Rubie was unavailable for the meeting, but the Board and the District also thanked him for his many years of service (2010-2019). A short reception followed.
Board Reorganization:
Our Board for 2020 is as follows:
- Ms. Jonee Dubos, President & Auditor
- Ms. Carolynn Perkins, Vice President
- Dr. Karen Bolton & Mr. John Hurley, WIAA Representative
- Ms. Alyson Rotter, outgoing president
Board of Distinction: For the second year in a row, the Board was honored by the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA) as a Board of Distinction for middle sized districts.
Our Consent Agenda included many usual business items, as well as several agreements, including an extension on subscription services (through February 2023) with the ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) Training Institute.
Bremerton High School has taken on a new program, Winter Wishes, inspired by a similar program at Meridian High School, and is excited to be helping students and families for the holidays. Our student representative, Gabriel O’Rourke-Dela Cruz shared that they are very grateful for the support they received from the community and are excited about how well the program is going.
Dr. Leavell and Max Karler, BHS Band Director, have been invited to participate on the planning committee for the development of Quincy Jones Square in downtown Bremerton.
Dr. Steedman presented the General Fund Closing Report for 2018/19 and with that the first GF Status Report for 2019/20. These reports can be found on BoardDocs.
The proposed 2020-2021 School Year Academic Calendar was approved by the Board. The Board also set its 2020/2021 Board Meeting Schedule so that schools are able to use this for planning purposes.
A Memo of Understanding was agreed to with the Bremerton Professional Educators Association (BPEA) changing the pay range for elementary clerical assistants.
The Board also approved the transfer of InvestED Funds (previously Saul Haas) from a trust account to the Associated Student Body Fund. A recent Governmental Accounting Standards Board has ruled that InvestED monies should be accounted for in the ASB Fund.
You can find these reports, other attachments, and more information on the agenda/BoardDocs site.

Applying for a grant?
Just a reminder! Any BSD staff member applying for a grant must receive pre-approval from their administrator for grants under $500, and from the District Leadership Team for grants over $500. This includes requests submitted to DonorsChoose.org.
We've clarified the guidelines and have replaced the cumbersome paper pre-approval form with a quick and easy Google Form. Check it out at: https://www.bremertonschools.org/grants. You can find a link to this page and the Grant Pre-Approval Google Form under the "Staff" tab on the website, in the "Staff Directory" under Grants.

What Supplies Students Really Need
Determining Student School Supply Needs for the Next School Year
A Capstone Project by Jaclyn Marvin
Hello, my name is Jaclyn Marvin and I am a student at Olympic College working towards a bachelor’s degree in Organizational Leadership and Technical Management. For my capstone project, I am planning on collecting school supplies for next year’s Back to School Fair.
I am working on collecting some data to help me narrow my focus so that students needs are more effectively met next year. I hope you'll consider taking my brief survey as it will really help me with my project, and ensure we are providing the resources our students need the most.
Thank you for your support! Please take my brief survey! Thank you!

Helpful tip for students and parents! How to access "clever" from a non-BSD device
We have gotten quite a few calls/emails from parents asking about logging into Clever on a non-BSD device. This information/video is being shared with parents via our BSD Family Updates (email/ robo call) and on Facebook. Parents/students can access this information, video, and a link to Clever on every building home page under "Quick Links."
"Clever" is the district landing page for software and websites used in instruction. There are math, English, social studies, science, and library resources available. Students use Clever to access their classwork, supplement their learning, and find resources for research and studying.
On district-provided devices such as Chromebooks or computer labs in the school, students have a direct login to Clever, but on home devices there are a few more steps.
This video shows you and your student how to log in to Clever from a non-district device, so they can have access to their resources when away from school. If you have questions, please contact digital.education@bremertonschools.org.

Survey from the Seattle Aquarium
We’re developing a teacher resource to accompany the newly released book Catastrophe by the Sea, and we would love feedback from teachers to ensure we make it a usable, helpful resource for them. Catastrophe by the Sea is an empathy-themed children’s book, which was inspired from our work to develop empathy for animals in order to promote conservation. Please share this email with any of your colleagues who would like to contribute their thoughts.
We’re defining a teacher resource as a tool that will either be used by teachers with their students or be completely student driven. Traditionally these have come in the form of tool kits that can be checked out. Considering the technological resources available today, we would like to identify what a teacher resource means/looks like for teachers in 2020.
This survey takes seven to 10 minutes to complete, and your feedback will help us create the teacher resource materials that will complement the book. For those who are interested, we will have an opportunity for teachers to join our teacher advisory group to further assist the development of the teacher resource materials.
As a thank-you for completing the survey, we’ll be happy to offer 10% off your purchase of Catastrophe by the Sea from the Aquarium gift shop (discount not available online) until December 31. You’ll also be entered into a raffle to receive a signed copy of the book as well as a free field trip for your class (max 40 students; chaperones are also free).
Thank you so much for your time, and we hope you can help us create the best teacher resource for you and your students. Take the survey here.
