Hello, Acorns!

This summer, the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region is proud to host its fifth annual READYteens program: a summer program that gives youth from the greater Los Angeles area the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the areas of disaster preparedness, response, and recovery, as well as the opportunity to make lasting friendships and connections.

Through READYteens, you gain service hours and earn certifications in:

• Incident Command System

• CPR/AED

• Stop the Bleed

• Psychological First Aid

• Basic Life Support

In the program, you will additionally get to learn more about:

• Search and Rescue

• Disaster Preparedness

• Triage

• First Aid

• Mental Health

• Emergency Communications

• Disaster Cycle Services

• and more!

This year, the READYteens program will be held at the Long Beach, Arcadia, Sherman Oaks, and Commerce Red Cross Chapters from July 10 through July 28, 2023, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 3 to 6 PM PST.

Food deliveries on campus was discussed. Superintendent Kuhlman discussed a new rule in the District that will not allow food deliveries to students on campus. All schools in the District provide free meals at breakfast and lunch. Families are encouraged not to bring food to school for students on special days. One of the main concerns is that it is difficult to manage these deliveries at the sites. Food is made available to each school site in advance. Food Services looks at meal trends and how many items are sold to have enough inventory at sites. A survey was conducted last month by the food services department. Ralph will find out the details of the survey. Food services tracks inventory on a daily basis. Meals are free but a la carte snacks have a fee.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation week will be held from 5/8-5/12. ROOTS has some amazing plans in store for our teachers and staff. If you'd like to help or get involved, please reach out to Hala (hsanoufi@gmail.com) or Fatin (fsako1@yahoo.com).

Our SCV ACSA board will make selections for each school and a winner will be announced at AOC's Senior Award Night (an event by invitation only).

Milo Tisdale is part of an award winning team that are champions once again, this time in Parliamentary Debate! After a fierce weekend of competition, with 4 preliminary rounds (after which they were the number one seed, having won ALL rounds unanimously), and 4 elimination rounds, Malena Bloom and Milo Tisdale won the state championship!

Way to go, Milo! We're so proud of you!

For the rest of the school year, students and parents are invited to share any good news that they are proud of with the rest of the AOC community. Please share the good news with me, jfine@hartdistrict.org and I will share it with the entire community. Let's celebrate our students' accomplishments together.

Located on the campus of College of the Canyons, AOC is proud to be the middle college high school in the William S. Hart Union High School District serving students 9th-12th grades in the Santa Clarita Valley. Students have the opportunity to earn between 24 and 44 transferable college units, prior to receiving their high school diplomas. Upon graduation, the majority of Academy students pursue their post high school education by continuing at COC and completing their college transfer requirements in only one year after high school. Other AOC students go directly into a four-year university, bringing their community college units with them and placing themselves well into their freshman and sophomore years at the college level. While attending AOC as a high school student, community college tuition is waived for established California residents.
