University School Weekly Update

We hope everyone was able to enjoy the weekend break! As we prepare for the week ahead, we ask that you please review the information below:

Elementary School Honoree – Maddie VanZant

Maddie goes out of her way to be kind and helpful to all her peers. When she sees someone in need, she jumps in to help. When she sees someone who needs an extra dose of kindness, she jumps in to offer it. Maddie also loves to learn and her curiosity and joy for school is contagious.

Getting to know…Maddie VanZant:

• If you could switch places with a famous person for one day, who would it be? “Jane Goodall.”
  
• What three things would you bring with you to a deserted island? “A big water bottle, a blanket, and a tent.”
  
• If you had $100,000 to give away, what would you do with it? “Give it to the Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Africa.”

"Maddie is a classroom leader who leads by example,” said Maddie’s teacher, Dr. Kelli Barnett. “She doesn't do nice and helpful things to be noticed or recognized, but simply does them in a subtle way because they are the right things to do. She moves through her day thoughtfully helping those around her."

High School Honoree – Anna Wells

When she has noticed new students at University School, Anna has taken initiative and volunteered to help guide them and make them feel comfortable without anyone even asking her. She is an all-around outstanding student. Aside from being a stellar academic student, Anna is also an athlete, participating on U-School’s girls soccer team and is planning on playing on the Lady Bucs basketball team as well.

Getting to know…Anna Wells:

• If you could switch places with a famous person for one day, who would it be? “Linsdey Horan, my favorite soccer player.”
  
• What three things would you bring with you to a deserted island? “A lighter, a sleeping bag, and a knife.”
  
• If you had $100,000 to give away, what would you do with it? “Give it (all) to the animal shelter.”

"Anna is a phenomenal student who shows her dedication to learning each day, but her eagerness to be a friend to those who need it most is what makes her a vital member of our school community," said Ms. Jessica Lee, Anna’s World History teacher.

University School Students, Annalee & Elliott Price, recently raised money at the Tree Streets Yard Sale by selling handmade yarn dolls. They both agreed the proceeds should be donated to One Acre Café.

One Acre Café is a faith based nonprofit café that offers delicious meals to all – regardless of one’s ability to pay. They graciously accepted the contribution, remarking, "It warms our hearts to see such caring children doing good in their community."

So very proud of our Bucs caring for and serving others!

Picture retake/make up day for Grades K-11 is on Monday, October 11th, 2021. If your child needs his/her picture retaken, please send in the proofs with your child.

University School will offer the Pre-SAT on Wednesday, October 13th, 2021, at 8:00 a.m. for registered students. Students who are potential National Merit Scholars must take PSAT/NMSQT in the junior year to qualify. The exam will also be open to sophomores who may want to prepare for PSAT/NMSQT in the junior year.

A little hocus pocus is in motion for our 2021 Fall Festival. Please plan on joining us for an evening of treats and a few friendly tricks! The ticket order form below may be sent back to your homeroom teachers. This form will be sent home with our K-8 students on Monday and will be available for our HS students in the library, office or from their English teachers.

Prestige photography is offering another opportunity for our seniors to be photographed for their senior portraits.

Prestige photographers will be set up for senior portraits on Saturday, October 23rd at Daniel Boone HS in Gray, Tennessee with appointments open to all area seniors.

The sessions offered on this day will include formal and casual poses, option for outdoor poses and a cap & gown session.

Prestige will provide the formal tux and drape as well as a cap & gown in our school colors.

It is time to register for Spring Dual Enrollment classes at ETSU is open for eligible students!

Registration:

• You must turn in a dual enrollment authorization form before you can register on Nov 5.
• Registration in Goldlink starts Nov 5. If you want a specific class, we strongly encourage you to register early.
• All forms need to be submitted by Oct. 31 in order to register on Nov. 5.

Grant:

• The TSAC grant has changed and will now pay for classes #3 and #4 starting this spring, based on 3 credit hour classes. You must qualify for the TSAC Dual Enrollment grant. Four credit hour classes may have additional charges.
• ETSU Scholarship for students on classes #5-#10. This scholarship is awarded to students with high school GPA of 3.4 or higher. The scholarship allows one class per semester to cost $75 with the scholarship amount added to the grant amount.

Congratulations to Dr. Lowery, Educator of the Week

Dr. Andrea Lowery, University School 5th grade teacher, was recognized by WJHL as the Educator of the Week for her commitment to her students and the energy she brings to the classroom. Dr. Lowery has worked with the University School since 2011. She received from ETSU a B.A. in Education with a concentration in Early Childhood, M.Ed. Special Education with a concentration in Early Childhood, and a doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.

Dr. Amanda Frasier, University High School Instructor, recently published a new article and also received a Presidential Grant-in-Aid.

Congratulations on the Publication

Dr. Amanda Slaten Frasier, Instructor at University School, has published a new article, “Principal-Led State Evaluation Policy: Teacher Perceptions at Four High Schools” in The Qualitative Report.

Dr. Frasier's study examined the following question: "Considering the legislative efforts to remove control of evaluation from local figures, do teachers perceive school principals as influencing the implementation of state-level evaluation policy and, if so, in what ways?"

The university’s new safety app, called ETSU App, is now available to download for Apple and Android devices. This new feature offers many new services, including information on:

• Reporting a tip
• Requesting a friend walk
• Accessing emergency plans for such incidents as a tornado, natural disasters, active shooters, etc.
• Learning about other safety resources

In addition, with the ETSU App, a person’s location will be made available when an emergency call is made. The ETSU App has become the primary notification platform. There are two important steps each student, faculty and staff member should take immediately in order to prevent any lapse in receiving this important information.

STEP 1 - Download the App

Download ETSU App, if you have not done so already. You can find it in the App store or Google Play.

STEP 2 - Text to Subscribe

Text ETSU to 237233 to receive emergency text alerts.

To get the emergency text messages you must send a text message to the number above to enroll. If you only have the ETSU App, you can receive push notifications when an emergency message is sent if you allow them in your phone settings. Email updates are sent to all student, faculty, and staff accounts and notifications are sent to all campus desktops.

To aid in the support of athletics at University School, the University School Foundation Athletics Committee (USFAC) will be selling Sports Passes this year to cover the cost of operating the USFAC programs. Passes include admission to all HOME Athletic Events for the entire 2021-22 school year. Passes do not include admission to away games or tournament play. Family passes are non transferable and must be presented at the gate for admission to the athletic event. Each family member (immediate household) will receive his or her own pass that must be presented for admission into home contests.
