The Souhegan Scoop
February 9, 2024
Message from the Principal
Last night we held our annual informational evening for families of current 8th grade students. It was an honor to host our future families and some of their students and welcome them into our community. The event was a fantastic opportunity for us to showcase the rich learning environment, introduce our dedicated staff, and provide insights into the exciting opportunities that await the class of 2028. Seeing the enthusiasm and curiosity on the faces of both students and families filled me with optimism for the bright journey ahead. I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the many staff members who put in long hours yesterday to ensure the evening was a success. And a special thank you to the current SHS students who served as panelists and shared their varied and valuable perspectives on what it’s like to be a student at Souhegan High School. The energy of the evening underscores the strong sense of community that defines our school.

Community-Wide Announcements & Reminders
National School Counseling Week
National School Counseling Week 2024, celebrated from Feb. 5–9, 2024, focuses public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do. National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. At Souhegan we are fortunate to have an exceptionally talented, caring, and dedicated school counseling staff, whose unwavering commitment contributes significantly to the well-being and success of our students: Erin Perry, Kylé Robson, Megan Worster, Melissa Fraley, Tim Cotreau, and Sheelu Joshi Flegal.
Printers for Engineering Science
Do you have an old or broken printer collecting dust or taking up space in the garage?
The engineering science class would be happy to take it off your hands! We will use them for our broken machine to car projects. Printers are the only broken machines that will work for this challenge, due to the need of moving parts.
School Highlights
Deliberative Session
Souhegan Seniors Sebastian Aftanas, Colin Atkinson, Thomas Hanlon, Alec Simoneau, and Samuel Smiley kicked off this year's SCSB Deliberative session by leading the audience in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. We recognize this group of students for their dedication to our school and military aspirations. Their commitment to service and the values represented by the pledge made them ideal candidates to contribute to this important tradition.

Get To Know SHS!
Meet the wonderful and talented staff members of SHS!
Betsy Wallisch
What is your role at Souhegan?
Science Teacher. I teach 9th grade Earth Systems Science and Forensics Science to 10, 11, and 12 graders.
How long have you been with Souhegan?
20 years!
What do you love about your job?
Definitely the kids and being on team. Teaching 9th grade is a challenge, but I love every roller-coaster minute of it. I particularly enjoy watching as the students grow and develop into their own person and follow their passions. The team structure allows us, as teachers, to help the students be successful as learners and as human beings.
What do you like to do outside of work?
I enjoy anything outdoors with my girls & dogs. I love to camp. hike, kayak, snowshoe, garden, barbeque and go to the beach & mountains. Traveling the globe is a passion of mine! My bucket list still includes visiting Tokyo and Kenya.
If you were given one wish what would it be?
My wish is very self-centered: I wish I could spend time with my dad, he died when I was six years old. He was a nuclear physicist and worked on the Manhattan Project. I would give anything to be able to chat with him and discuss his views of the world today.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra?
You only live life once, but if you live it right, once is enough.
Community Council
At our last Community Council, voted to pass a proposal which would eliminate the student of the month. We will be having committee time at our next meeting on Monday 2/11 from 3:05-3:45 in the Infocenter.
