2ND GRADE THANKSGIVING CELEBRATION
Our Second Grade had a great learning experience as we learned all about the First Thanksgiving. Our driving question was “How did the Pilgrims and the Wampanoag impact our history?”. We worked hard on our reading and writing skills as we researched and learned the events from the past. We shared with our families what we discovered by having a Thanksgiving Celebration. We started with a performance that included songs, poems, and a Reader’s Theater story that told about the timeline and events of the Pilgrim and Wampanoag history. We learned that the Pilgrims would not have survived if it wasn’t for the friendship and help from the Wampanoags. Without their friendship, our history would be different today. The second grade also made an artifact and an informational writing that demonstrated our learning. We invited families to visit us and learn about our artifacts at our Artifact Museum. We ended our celebration with a Thanksgiving Feast as we enjoyed foods that would have been shared at the First Thanksgiving.

3RD GRADE THANKSGIVING DAY PARADE!
3rd Graders in Ms. Strahan and Mrs. Thompson’s class read a book called Balloons Over Broadway by Melissa Sweet. The book tells about the true story of how Tony Sarg made the first parade balloons for Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Tony loved making things move and discovering new ways of doing things. Tony used a Growth Mindset while planning, adapting, and developing ideas for the giant balloons. After reading, students tackled a STEM challenge to design and create their very own balloon for our 3rd Grade Thanksgiving Parade. Students worked hard to sketch out their designs, create, reflect and improve their plans with the materials given. We also paraded around the school to show off our creations! We had so much fun!

DECEMBER CHARACTER TRAIT IS HONESTY
December- Honesty
Mantra- I can practice honesty.
Quote- “Leading your life honestly and truthfully will create trust and friendship.” -Dalai Lama
READY OR NOT- THE COLD WEATHER IS HERE!
We're starting to see MANY students bundled up each day, which is great! Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students will start needing warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots daily throughout the winter.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10+ degrees.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
SANTA'S SECRET SHOP!
Please join us in volunteering to work at Santa's Secret Shop at Emerson Elementary School. There are four time slots available. Feel free to just come in for half a day or stay the whole day (make sure you pack a lunch!). Volunteers will assist kids as they shop to help them keep their money organized and to help keep track of who they are buying for, and how much they are able to spend. We will also need volunteers to sit at the wrapping table and to walk kids to and from their classrooms. Thank you so much for your willingness to help.
TOY DRIVE!
Emerson's Student Council is hosting a Toy Drive benefitting the Salvation Army. It will run until Friday, Dec. 8. Barrels are located outside of the front office.

Requesting a Change in Learning Mode
At this time, families are eligible to request to change the learning mode for their student(s) for the second semester of the 2023-2024 school year. Families that are currently enrolled in in-person can switch to virtual, and families who are enrolled in virtual can switch to in-person. If you do not wish to switch your child’s learning mode, no action is necessary.
Requests will be handled on a case-by-case basis. Submitting the form linked in this email does not guarantee a request will be granted. Requests will be reviewed by building and district leadership and the parent/guardian will be notified. If approved, the change will be effective for the second semester (January 8 - June 7, 2024). Once a request has been approved, it will be for the duration of the second semester. Please carefully consider this semester-long commitment before submitting this application, as requests to change during the second semester will not be granted.
Additionally, please note that we have partnered with third party providers for the students’ daily instruction. We utilize Lincoln Learning for our K-6 students and Edgenuity for 7-12. A Fraser teacher will be assigned as your child’s mentor to help check in, keep him/her on track, and align the grading system with Fraser’s. The bulk of your child's instruction will be online and course content will be delivered by Lincoln Learning and Edgenuity. For younger students, a learning coach will be a critical piece in their success. The learning coach needs to support your child with daily instruction, content delivery, and technology. Please note, the District may change your child’s learning mode if appropriate academic progress is not met throughout the semester.
If you are interested in changing your child’s learning mode for the second semester, please fill out the application linked below. You will need to submit one request for each student.
