Safety and Traffic Reminders

Important: Drop Off and Pick Up Reminders

To help with the flow of traffic during drop off, please help by pulling over to drop your student off on on Agawam Road. For the safety of your student, please do not stop in the middle street and block the flow of traffic.
During pick up, please be mindful when parking on side streets near the school, especially on the corners of Virginia and Agawam Road as well as Virginia Road and Shore Avenue. The buses need clearance to turn and exit the neighborhood safely. Please avoid parking opposite from other cars on our side streets. It restricts passage for emergency vehicles.
Please use cross walks to keep yourself and your student safe as you cross the street.

Please obey all traffic and parking regulations.
Please be patient and courteous of all other pedestrians, cars and our crossing guard.

Please join us for a MARC Webinar. Navigating Healthy Peer Relationships with Dr. Elizabeth Englander. Executive Director and Founder, Massachusetts Aggression Reduction Center & Professor of Psychology. Let's talk about bullying, cyber-bullying, peer conflicts, frenemies, and more. Before the pandemic, screen use, anxiety, and social problems like bullying and fighting were top concerns for parents. The last few years have made some of these issues even more challenging. This talk will examine how kids are doing emotionally and socially in light of the ways kids use screens, gaming, and social media. We'll explore how these conditions create challenges in school, like bullying and friendship issues. We will look at the latest research as well as practical approaches to help children develop emotional resilience, healthy social skills, and sensible screen and social media habits. Lunar New Year 2024!

It’s Lunar New Year celebration month at Merrymount. The Lunar New Year bulletin board was crafted with a lot of love by Winnie Liu & her 4th-grade daughter Theodora. A big shout-out to Carson (2nd grade) for her help in putting up the bulletin board. We are very excited to celebrate the Lunar New Year this year with the Lion Dance and Lunar New Year Parade this month. The Lunar New Year parade will be led by the Merrymount students.

Let's all join in celebrating the Chinese and Vietnamese Lunar New Year traditions.

Quincy Public Schools Kindergarten Registration

January 2, 2024 Welcome to Quincy Public Schools! Children who will be 5 years of age on or before August 31, 2024 are eligible to attend Kindergarten beginning in September 2024. Kindergarten registration is a two-step process: • Beginning January 3, families fill out the online Pre-Registration form: https:// fs30.formsite.com/lauraowens/iafajagloo/index • Beginning February 5, families will be contacted to schedule an appointment to complete the registration process. This appointment may be at the school site or the Central Registration office for families needing interpretation services. • Appointments will be scheduled during school hours through the end of the school year in June. Kindergarten Registration forms are available on the Quincy Public Schools website (quincypublicschools.com) under the Family & Community tab/ Student Registration. If you are not sure of your neighborhood district school, the Quincy Public Schools Street Directory is available on the QPS website Student Registration page. If your child attends a Quincy Public Schools Pre-Kindergarten program at the Amelio Della Chiesa Early Childhood Center, Point Webster, or Snug Harbor it is not necessary to register your child for Kindergarten. Student Attendance

You can review your child’s attendance record on ASPEN. Please note, absences, tardies or dismissals can be excused with medical documentation. If you child missed school due to medical illness or an appointment, please provide a doctor’s note to our main office to excuse this absence. If you have any medical documentation for any of the absences listed in ASPEN, please provide those to the school main office as soon as possible so we can update our records. Ms. Scott is always available to consult with families regarding a child’s absence due to sickness. We understand there are times when children are ill and unable to attend school or a special circumstance may come up; however, each time your child is absent, late or dismissed they are missing opportunities to learn.

Dear Families, We are writing to invite you to join your school, your district, and the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) in a campaign to improve student attendance. The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted a lot of routines, including the habit of going to school every day. We know that there are often valid reasons for students to be absence, but, to a troubling extent, students are missing more school now than they did previously. Before the pandemic, 13 percent of students were chronically absent, meaning they had missed 10 percent or more of the school year. Last year, 22 percent of students, close to 1 in 4 statewide, were chronically absent. Missing that much school - 18 days or more from a typical school year - can cause a child to fall behind in their learning and miss opportunities to build positive relationships. with other students and with school staff. These losses may result in increased anxiety and interrupted social and emotional development. Chronic absenteeism appears in every type of district - urban, suburban, rural, regional, traditional public schools, career technical schools, charter schools, elementary school, middle schools, and high schools. Many research studies have concluded that regardless of family income or background, students whose parents are involved in their schooling are more likely to have higher grades and test scores, attend school regularly, have better social skills, show improved behavior, and adapt well to school. We want all our students to have the opportunity to achieve all of these things. The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is committed to supporting your district as it works to ensure that every school is safe, welcoming, and supportive, with engaging and creative instruction and joyful classrooms. Your district and schools are committed to partnering with you to find ways to remove any barriers that may be hindering any child from coming to school every day. We are asking you to commit to making daily school attendance part of your family's routine again. As a leader of your family, you are the best and most important influencer of your child. When you make a point of getting them to school every day, they will understand that it is important for their success. None of us can change chronic absenteeism by ourselves, but we believe that by working together to bring students to school and offering engaging, supportive environments, our students will learn, grow, and thrive. Open Parachute School Wellness Program

QPS has provided all schools with access to Open Parachute, a school wellness program. There are some excellent parent resources available (link) to families to help navigate the many stages of a child's life. Classroom teachers meet with students regularly and use Open Parachute lessons each month to support social emotional learning and mental health.

Winter Benchmark Testing

QPS Benchmark Testing

In the Quincy Public Schools, all students are assessed in the Fall, Winter and Spring of each school year to monitor their individual progress. Students in Grades Kindergarten through Grade 3 complete Amplify mClass DIBELS (Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills) testing for Reading and students in Grades 2 to 5 complete the MAP (Measures of Academic Progress) testing for Reading and Mathematics. Additionally, students in Grades 4 & 5 complete the MAP assessment for Science.

Your child’s Winter Benchmark Assessment results will be sent home before February Break. This Winter report is helpful as it shows your child’s growth in their learning from their achievement in September. Please review your child’s Winter Benchmark Assessments. If you have any questions or would like to discuss further, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s classroom teacher.

The SchoolMessenger system is essential for notification and communication. QPS school officials will use SchoolMessenger to deliver a single, clear message to parents or guardians by telephone, cell phone, email, or text message in any combination. SchoolMessenger can also be used to notify you of a school closing due to inclement weather and to communicate daily information, such as sports schedules, newsletters, attendance notifications, and other announcements.

The system is set up to automatically pull your contact information from what we have in our Student Information System (Aspen) and carry it over into SchoolMessenger. Please contact your school building office to update your contact information or confirm you are receiving SchoolMessenger communications.
