HTHS Culinary Academy Flies High at NASA
The Hewitt-Trussville High School Culinary Academy recently returned from NASA Johnson Space Flight Center in Houston after competing as one of ten national finalists in the annual NASA HUNCH Competition. Madison McGee, Zoe Walker, Kaysia Beverly, Mathew Helms, and Jordan Cummings competed on the national level under the direction of Culinary Academy Director Chef Anna Hallman. The team's challenge? Create a dish that met strict nutritional guidelines for consumption by astronauts in space. Results from this annual competition will come in early May. According to Chef Hallman, students also wanted to prepare something comforting as this will be a quarantine meal eaten by the astronauts before flight. As high school students familiar with COVID and its impacts, they knew exactly what they would want as a meal for this scenario. Student chefs prepared a healthy version of fried chicken fingers that were purported to taste similar to those from Chick-fil-A, mac and cheese made healthy by using a combination of cheese and pureed carrots, and a frozen apple pie yogurt with a granola “crust" for dessert. Hewitt-Trussville High School has earned a spot in this national competition several times, placing second in the U.S. one year and sweeping the entire national competition the third year the team competed.
Paine ELA Project Culminates with Character Presentations
At Paine Elementary School, 3rd grade students recently researched famous people who have made tremendous impacts in their respective fields. Students authored reports using the five nonfiction text structures (description, sequence, compare and contrast, cause and effect, and problem and solution) - all taught during English Language-Arts (ELA) lessons. As a culmination of this project, these 3rd graders dressed as their character and presented their hard work! This is a unit they will not soon forget. -Submitted
