July 2021 - CSD Board of Education
Excerpts from the Regular Meeting of the City Schools of Decatur
Board of Education held on July 13, 2021
Board Spotlight: Launchpad for Learning Summer Camp
Mr. Eddie Johnson shared a presentation about the CSD Launchpad for Learning Summer Camp which kicked off this week. The importance of summer school is different from years past due to a year of learning loss and lost instructional time in the aftermath of COVID-19. The Launchpad for Learning Summer Camp is an opportunity for our students to get comfortable with their school before the first day. Launchpad for Learning is melding summer camp and summer school together to create an engaging and inclusive experience. Students attend camp for 3 hours per day for 4 days. Staff will provide students with lessons on expectations for the school (PBIS), preview essential academic skills, opportunities for the students to be more familiar with their school, and engage students in fun social activities.
We, the board members, look forward to hearing the outcomes and how Launchpad for Learning helped our students prepare for the coming school year.
Consent Agenda and Action Items - What's the difference?
Consent Agenda items are a series of actions that the board may approve all at once without discussing each item. These items tend to be more administrative in nature or have previously been agreed to. Board members may "pull" an item from the Consent Agenda to discuss and vote on separately during the Action Items part of the agenda.
Action Items are items that are up for a vote by the board as individual items. These items usually also have a discussion period before a vote is called for. Most items require a simple majority of board members to pass.
FY2022 Budget Amendment
The board unanimously approved the FY2022 budget amendment I, presented by Ms. Lonita Broome, Chief Financial Officer. The adjustment included the updated tax revenue in the amount of $45,500,000. The final adoption of the 21-22 millage rate was approved at a special board meeting held on June 22, 2021. The rate increased from 20.25 to 21.00.
In order to retain the best staff at CSD and to keep pace with neighboring districts, the amendment also included a 1% cost of living increase to all employees. Additionally, the FY22 budget includes a step increase for all eligible employees.
The FY22 Budget is posted on the district’s website at https://www.csdecatur.net/finance.
