The Meetings in Review
Transportation Improvement Planning Update
During the August 16 work session meeting of the Board, district transportation consultant Robert Schoch presented an update to his transportation improvement plan.
Mr. Schoch reported that he has met with the transportation committee comprised of staff, administrators, First Student representatives, and parents. He commented that the committee’s input has been valuable and is part of why we are making good progress. While he shared that there remains much work ahead in preparing for the start of school, many senior First Student drivers have come forward to help test routes and offer input as well.
The voting meeting on August 23, 2016 witnessed the Board approving bus stops for the coming school year along with a parameters resolution. It was shared that there have been many bus route, bus number, and pick up time changes for the 2016-2017 school term, made with an eye on efficiency and rider experience. These changes will result in an average reduction in overall drive time for students of approximately 20%. Dr. Zerbe thanked First Student and the drivers for their assistance and cooperation.
Staffing Update
The August 23 regular meeting agenda notes a number of teacher movements and reassignments, as the district moves toward becoming fully staffed for the new school year. During the work session meeting, Dr. Katona spoke to the addition of seven instructional aides who will provide targeted support in math and English language arts instruction at Arcola, Woodland, and Eagleville. An increase of $223,400 in Federal Title 1 Funds received by the district provided a perfect opportunity for Methacton to leverage the additional instructional aides to best support students and teachers at schools that qualify to receive funding through the Federal Title 1 program.
Opening Day
Dr. Zerbe recognized all the hard work of the support and administrative staff this summer while also recognizing that many teachers have been in throughout the summer working on curriculum and other preparatory matters for the start of school on September 6, 2016. He mentioned that he will be welcoming all district staff back at the in-service scheduled for August 30. Dr. Zerbe also stated that he looks forward to the start of the 2016-2017 school year as he brings our teachers, staff, administration, and the community together to support the social, emotional, physical, and intellectual needs of our students.
All items listed on the August 23 agenda were approved. Of particular note, the 2016-2017 school handbooks were approved by the board and will be added to the district's website for parent and student review.
