Mrs. Mackey's social studies class toured the facilities in the Guttenberg Municipal Building recently, visiting the City Offices, the local election/voting location, the auditorium, and the City Council Chambers. Some students tried out the City Council seats, exploring the role of citizens in creating a healthy community. Students from left to right: Zean P, Mollie S, Lola R, Bianca F, Audrey O, and Owen L.

Mrs. Mackey's social studies class visited Lock and Dam #10 recently and looked at the large collection of photographs documenting the construction of the dam during 1934-1937. Approximately 15,000,000 tons of cargo passes through the lock each year. Third graders took a walk around our community today to look for signs of weathering and recorded the examples in their journals. This is part of the Science unit on rocks.

As part of Red Ribbon Week Awareness, Mr. Wahls spoke to grades 6-8 about his experience training his wild mustang Taser on Thursday, October 31.

He encouraged students to find something they are passionate about in life.

ROBOTICS

During the month of October the EAGLES+ students learned about Robotics from Kathy Hay, from Keystone AEA, who visited us on October 7. She showed the students different types of robots and talked about the Robotic Vocabulary words and coding words we learned before her visit. She demonstrated how to use some of the robots she brought. Then we spent a week studying robotics and trying out the different robots.

ROBOTS

The 5th grade students built some robots that we ordered from Amazon. This was a challenging activity for the students. They had to take some of the robots apart and rebuild them when they did not work correctly. Some of the 5th grade girls showed the younger EAGLES+ how the three robots they built worked.

SCRATCH JR.

Mrs. Deb Henkes helped teach the students about Scratch Jr. a coding program. All of the EAGLES+ students created stories using Scratch Jr. and PBIS Scratch Jr. Then they shared their stories with others in their class on the Promethean board. They came up with some very creative stories using Scratch Jr.

Athletic director is a difficult position for a small school to fill. In the past, the job has been held by the principal, or sometimes a teacher who has had to be released from classes. Time is needed to work with the conference and state to schedule events, find referees and handle other growing duties associated with the job.

Besides the duties of organizing events before they occur, he or she is required to set up for home events and attend them to supervise and be a trouble-shooter. The job had become too time consuming for a principal or teacher, whose duties have also been increasing.

When Clayton Ridge realized the need for a part-time athletic director, luckily, the school didn’t have to look far for someone who would fit the needs of the school. Mr. Ty Troutman, who had both experience with and interest in students and athletics, was hired.

Mr. Troutman is a native of Dyersville where he graduated from Beckman Catholic in 2012.

“In high school, I participated in about anything and everything,” he shared, “but track was my favorite.”

His father, Mr. Todd Troutman, has served Beckman for many years as a coach, Athletic Director, Dean of Students and science instructor, so his son’s interest in education came naturally. His mother, Andrea, has worked at Fareway store for years. Mr. Troutman is the third of four siblings, having a brother and two sisters.

After graduating from high school, Mr. Troutman earned a degree in Business Administration and Sports Management from Wartburg College in Waverly where he ran track. He later received his Masters from the University of Dubuque.

“I previously worked at Waterloo Columbus as an assistant athletic director and worked as an associate at Cascade, shadowing the athletic director, who was a great help to me in learning the ropes,” said Mr. Troutman.

Fortunately, Mr. Troutman is also able to work the rest of the day helping students one on one with their academics as an associate and a supervisor of study halls.

Although Mr. Troutman still follows sports during his free time, his family is his main interest. His wife, Jodi, is also in education. She is an Enrollment advisor at NICC in Peosta. The family of two will soon be a family of three; a new baby, their first child, will join them in December.

“I have had a lot of support here at Clayton Ridge,” smiled Mr. Troutman. “It is good to see the kids succeed in all areas.”

3rd grade students in Mrs. Palmer’s and Mrs. Connelly’s classes pose by a fire truck with the fire hats they received from the Garnavillo fire department. Fireman Chad Schroyer explains the emergency equipment.

Students in 5th grade learned about the function of their skulls. They examined their own heads and made discoveries about their skull. They created a mask that shares the characteristics with their own skull and jaw.

These students earned green tickets for positive behavior, which allowed them to be drawn as winners for the pizza with the principal in the new commons!

Mrs. Tami Palmer, 3rd Grade

Third graders in Mrs. Connelly and Mrs. Palmer’s classes enjoyed a pizza party for logging the most minutes during the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge! They even had popcorn balls afterwards compliments of Mrs. Vaughan!

We kicked off Red Ribbon Week by wearing red to show that we are “Red-y” to Live Drug-Free Lives! Students also participated in other dress-up days to show support of living drug-free and healthy lives by wearing camouflage to be all they can be, stay in the same and wear jerseys and uniforms, say “boo” to drugs for Halloween, and Clayton Ride Gear to show that Eagle Pride is Drug-Free! Throughout the week students had many activities to promote these choices as well. All students worked on writing assignments, peer pressure resources, coloring pages, and Red Ribbon Bingo. Older students participated in Kahoot quizzes online, and 2nd graders completed an activity booklet with Mrs. Kraus.

In 1988, the National Family Partnership sponsored the first National Red Ribbon Celebration. Today, the red ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. NFP and its network of individuals and organizations continue to deliver Agent Carmarena's message of hope to millions of people every year, through the National Red Ribbon Campaign. Agent Carmarena was a DEA agent who lost his life due to the destruction caused by drugs in America.

Toddler Time - November 8 at 10:30 a.m.
Join Miss Nancy for stories, songs, fleece boards, crafts and playtime.
Programing is suitable for 2-4 year old children.

Creation Station - November 15 from 2-4 p.m.
This is a drop in, hands on program for any school aged child. Each month there will be a different project to do. The November program will be making Christmas ornaments for the library Christmas tree.

Frozen Party - November 16 from 1-3 p.m.
Stop by and see the castle, play some games, meet some characters from the movie Frozen, have a picture taken, make a craft and enjoy a snack.
Wear your costumes too!

Movie Matinee - November 22 at 2:00 p.m.
Stop by and enjoy a movie. We will provide the popcorn!
Movie to be determined yet.

St. Mary's Art Show will be happening throughout the month of November, please stop in and see their masterpieces.

The Guttenberg Library will be closed November 11, 28 and 29 for holidays.
