May 2021 Newsletter
Happy Asian American & Pacific Islander Heritage Month!
"Happy Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, Breakthrough! We are proud to celebrate the contributions of our AAPI community members across the Collaborative. In times of blatant injustice, we are especially inspired by your tireless work towards achieving educational equity and making our mission a reality for students across the nation.
We'd like to share this quote from the late peace activist Yuri Kochiyama;
"Remember that consciousness is power. Consciousness is education and knowledge. Consciousness is becoming aware. It is the perfect vehicle for students. Consciousness-raising is pertinent for power, and be sure that power will not be abusively used, but used for building trust and goodwill domestically and internationally. Tomorrow's world is yours to build.""

What does Breakthrough mean to you?
"Breakthrough has helped me to emerge from my shell and blossom into a radiant & proactive global steward, who is ready to change the world! Breakthrough has given me the resources to craft meaningful connections, and ask myself how I can rise for everyone through acts of advocacy, compassion, and awareness.
Breakthrough means shattering negative preconceived notions that are placed on me, and ultimately, generating the change and success I would like to see for the world. Unequivocally, Breakthrough means taking hold of all the opportunities that await for me to see my dreams and visions come to life!"
In what ways has your Breakthrough experience contributed to your College Bound Journey?
"Breakthrough has helped me tremendously in self advocacy for my College Bound journey. As a Black womxn in an educational system that operates in opposition to my success, it becomes infuriating witnessing indignities perpetually affect and disincentivize students who look like me. As a result, I personally have felt that I am not worthy of pursuing enrichment opportunities. This heavy feeling should not be felt by any student.
However, with my time at Breakthrough, I have been exposed to leaders who are passionate about my pursuits and are more than willing to assist, guide, and provide resources that will aid me on my journey. The Breakthrough team makes me feel welcomed to be able to ask questions, learn, and most importantly encourage me to realize that I am more than deserving of my future pursuits and aspirations. I am inundated with gratification. Every student should have a portal such as Breakthrough at Kent Denver to expose them to impactful and transformative avenues!"
Randy

Randy is excited to graduate in the Spring and begin his studies in the Fall! He is also returning to the Breakthrough community this summer as a Teaching Fellow!

COUNTDOWN TO BREAKTHROUGH SUMMER PROGRAM 2021
We are thrilled that we are less than 1 month away from our 2021 Summer programming! We are preparing to deliver an in-person Summer Program for our students. There are aspects of our "normal" summer that will have to shift to ensure we are staying safe and protecting our community. However, the full time time team is diligently planning programming that amplifies our Breakthrough culture and addresses learning loss as a result of COVID-19.
