Great news! Last week the District's SAM (staffing allocation model) group met and made the decision was made to allocate an additional teacher for 5th grade. We are actively working on hiring a teacher and creating balanced class lists. At this point, our plan is to open the new classroom as soon as possible. We are thrilled to have this additional allocation to lower class size.

Today we had our first Fire Drill today! Students did an amazing job remembering the procedures for drill. We were very proud of them. We are required to have a Fire Drill every month. Students will also experience a variety of drills throughout the year.

Here in the Beaverton School District, we teach children important skills for getting along with others and doing well in school. In order to help our school be a safe and supportive place where everyone can learn, we also provide age-appropriate health instruction. There will be two primary resources used for this instruction: The Great Body Shop to teach the adopted Oregon Health Standards and fightchildabuse.org to teach sexual abuse prevention in accordance with Erin’s Law. Oregon Health Education Standards

The Great Body Shop, published by The Children’s Health Market, will be used to teach the new Oregon Health Education Standards. It offers skills-based instruction that addresses physical, social, emotional, and mental health. Human Sexuality Education instruction is age appropriate, medically accurate, and relevant for all students. If you would like to preview the materials, this document outlines the process for previewing the curriculum and for information on opting-out.

Erin’s Law

An important component of our curriculum is to help children protect their bodies, get support when abuse has occurred, and report to a trusted adult. In accordance with Erin’s Law, we are educating children about sexual abuse and promoting awareness within our communities. The Oregon Department of Education has required all Oregon schools to comply with Erin’s Law. The Erin’s Law lessons address personal safety, touching safety and assertiveness.

Your child’s teacher will be sharing these sexual abuse prevention lesson outcomes with you prior to teaching them, but you can also find the full lessons and videos on fightchildabuse.org. Remember that the 30-day Rollover Period for 2018-2019 meal benefits will end in early October. Be sure to apply TODAY so your students don’t have a lapse in benefits. Any families whose students go into “Paid” status will be responsible to pay for all meals charged in school cafeterias. Don’t let this happen to you!!

All you need is your student’s ID number. If you don’t have that, you can call your school office or the Meal Benefits line (503-356-3957). Here are some of your options in SchoolCafe:

1. Create an account
2. Apply for Meal Benefits
3. View and print Meal Benefits letters
4. See what items your student is getting in the cafeteria.
5. Check your student’s account balance.
6. View cafeteria menus
7. Set up low balance alerts
8. Set up auto-pay (when balance gets to an amount that YOU set, the account is replenished from your credit card)

SchoolCafe can provide amazing amounts of information!

If you do not have access to a computer, you can also apply for Meal Benefits on paper. Applications are available in every school office and cafeteria.
